Volunteer & Donation Opportunities How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. - Anne Frank

It takes many hearts and hands to do what we do at Jericho Road. Lend us yours! ESL Initiative Our ESL Initiative supports refugee adults in gaining everyday English language skills. Our program is targeted at beginner level learners who face barriers to accessing other available ESL services. Volunteers co-teach small learning groups in student homes over the course of an 8 week cycle for an hour and a half twice per week. Helpful qualities for volunteers are cross-cultural sensitivity, flexibility, patience, creativity and an interest in communicating with English language learners. We provide a curriculum, as well as an orientation and training before you begin teaching. Volunteers can also provide on-site, in-home childcare for students children during classes. Donation opprtunities: Small and medium whiteboards, dry erase markers, 3-ring binders, blank index cards, flash cards (numbers, sight words, phonics), picture dictionaries (suggested Oxford Picture Dictionary), ESL workbooks, and other language learning materials. 2 JRCHC

Priscilla Project The Priscilla Project provides targeted assistance for medically at-risk pregnant women, primarily refugees, through volunteer mentors, educational sessions, and increased health and social services. Mentors use social support, education, access to health care services and community resources as instruments of change and empowerment for their mentees. Volunteer mentors meet with their mentees at least once per week over the course of 4-5 months. Mentors quickly become trusted friends, many of whom attend their mentees births. Common activities include WIC shopping, help with acquiring baby supplies with referrals provided by the staff, and engaging in fun activities with their mentee. Hours are flexible. Driving and access to a car are recommended but not required. Cross-cultural sensitivity is very important. Volunteer drivers transport pregnant women in their own vehicles to appointments at medical facilities and service agencies. Volunteers can choose a regular day each week or volunteer on an as needed basis. A DMV screening will be conducted as volunteers are covered under Jericho Road s liability insurance. Donation opportunities: Pack n Play cribs, infant car seats, infant thermometers, diapers (sizes 1, 2, 3), baby wipes, infant (up to age 12 months only) and maternity clothing (must be new or gently used/washed), onesies, socks, hats, sleep sacks, receiving blankets, teething rings, pacifiers, educational infant toys. We accept items that are clean, freshly laundered, unbroken, and free of pet hair. Volunteer & Donate 3

Hope Refugee Drop-In Center The Hope Refugee Drop-In Center offers advocacy, assistance, and interpretation for refugees seeking to adjust to the U.S. through client-driven case management. Volunteer drivers are needed Monday-Friday to accompany clients to medical appointments. We also seek out volunteers who are able to escort clients to appointments via public transit. Office volunteers are also needed on MWF to assist the Program Coordinator with filing and managing the flow of clients in need of help. Donation opportunities: Office supplies are greatly appreciated (particularly pens, paper clips, binder clips, white-out correction tape, dry-erase markers), crayons and coloring books, monthly bus passes for staff and volunteers to escort clients to appointments, and monetary support for off-site team building activities. Parent-Child Home Program The Jericho Road Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) helps preschoolers prepare for school by equipping parents to be their child s first teacher in a learning-rich environment. Volunteers help at the annual end-of-theyear celebration by coordinating and manning activities, as well as providing and serving refreshments. Volunteers have also helped to fundraise, collect donated books for graduation, and prayed regularly for our program. Donation opportunities: Gently used toddler/ preschool books, book store gift cards, and small children s backpacks (prek size). 4 JRCHC

FLY After School Program The FLY (Focused Learning for Youth) After School Program provides support to refugee middle school and ninth grade students, assisting them in homework, math, literacy, and social-emotional development. Volunteers help by assisting students with homework one-on-one and in groups from 3:30-4:15 Monday-Friday. Helpful qualities include being able to form relationships with middle school students, cross-cultural communication, and knowledge of middle school academics. Background checks are required. Donation opportunities: Academic computer software, 2nd-10th grade reading level books, general school and craft supplies, healthy snacks, juice, ipod dock & speakers, functioning laptops, collapsible soccer goals, DSLR camera. Financially Fit Financially Fit offers free, basic financial education to refugee adults, empowering them and their families with the knowledge needed to successfully embrace a healthy financial lifestyle. Volunteers help by providing childcare one or more times during evening classes. Background checks required. Volunteers may also do data entry into Excel during class time. Donation opportunities: Cases of bottled water, microwave popcorn, pocket folders, pens, name tags. Volunteer & Donate 5

Polly Project The Polly Project is a mentoring program for economically disadvantaged, single mothers, age 16-24, who are pursuing an educational goal. Serving women residing near our Genesee Street location, the program provides practical support for both basic needs as well as educational needs through case management and mentoring. Volunteer mentors are paired with a single mom to provide support and guidance as she addresses whatever obstacles are in the way to completing an educational goal, helping to give her a pathway out of poverty. Mentors are asked to commit a minimum of 2 hours per week for 6 months. Donations of new laptops are gifted to mentees, as needed, to assist in reaching educational goals. Grocery and Walmart gift cards are also appreciated. City Roots City Roots is a homebuyer education class on financial stability and savings for refugee clients seeking to purchase a house. Offerings include multilingual credit education and first time home buyers clubs. Volunteers with experience in finance and the home buying process are invited to speak at monthly club meetings. 6 JRCHC

Sponsorship Needs AmeriCorps Member Sponsorship: Sponsor a full-time AmeriCorps member to serve with one of our programs for a year ($6,000-7,500/member) Jericho Road Global Health Outreach: Sign up to be a monthly sponsor in support of Phebian Abdulai, a nurse from Sierra Leone who has returned to her home country to start a mobile medical clinic servicing rural areas. Do a fundraiser for us! JRCHC staff can work with you to provide displays and content to help you tell the Jericho Road story among your networks. Medical Computers: Help equip our staff with laptops ($1,200 each) and desktops ($800 each) for critical medical records and programming needs. t Special Events Event Sponsorship: Be a sponsor of our annual Jericho Road benefit, Imprint Buffalo, or other events throughout the year. Back to School Drive (for Fall distribution): K-12 school supplies, sturdy backpacks, boxes of tissues, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, pencil pouches, scissors, lined index cards, rulers, etc. Bundle Up Buffalo (for October distribution): New and gently used clean blankets and winter outerwear (only coats, snow pants, scarves, boots, mittens, gloves, and hats) for men, women and children of all ages. Volunteer & Donate 7

Volunteers bring critical energy, skill, time, and resources to Jericho Road. Through meaningful opportunities, we are sharing Jesus love in tangible ways, helping our neighbors to overcome the barriers of poverty they face, and participating in mutual transformation.
