Corks make their entire journey from stores to recycling centers on trucks already in-route to each destination with virtually zero increase in carbon footprint. West of the Rockies, corks are turned into recyclable wine shippers containing 10% cork. In the Midwest, corks are used in cork floor tiles. And on the East Coast and in the UK, corks will be transported to Jelinek Cork Group, one of the oldest cork manufacturers in North America, where old corks will be made into post-consumer products. Building Materials Habitat for Humanity's ReStores A Richmond Highway, Alexandria, or 4262 Entre Court, Chantilly, Habitat ReStores are retail outlets where quality used and surplus building materials are sold at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within the community. Check the Fairfax County website ( or for events including Electric Sundays, Paper Shredding, Hazardous Waste Pick-up and America Recycles Day generally held at Herndon High school in the fall.
6 Reston Town Center ( holds R4 (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Reston!) Collection Days in the Town Center Pavilion, especially for residents and employees in Town Center. Items include computers and many other electronics, bicycles ($10 donation) and accessories, compact fluorescent bulbs, documents for shredding, eyeglasses, hearing aids. Reston Association ( in partnership with Turtle Wings, collects computers and other electronics at their Earth Day Festival. In addition, RA holds community yard sales. Check the Reston Community Center website ( in the spring for information on when to donate prom dresses and accessories for the RCC Prom Dress Give A Way. Check Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgin s website ( in the fall/winter or Reston Interfaith ( for when to donate new and gently used, cleaned adult and child winter coats, hats, gloves and scarves for the Hunter Mill Coat Closet in partnership with Reston Interfaith at the North County Government Center at Bowman Towne Drive in Reston. For Operation Medicine Cabinet Cleanout, The Reston District Police Station, (12000 Bowman Towne Drive, ) has hosted drop-off boxes for a week in the October for unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications during Substance Abuse Awareness Week. General Recycling/Disposal Reston South Park & Ride Reston Parkway open during daylight hours Accepts Newspaper; Plastic Bottles & Jugs; Glass Jars & Bottles; Mixed Paper (cardboard, "junk mail," magazines, envelopes, catalogs, office paper); Metal Cans (food & beverage). I-66 Transfer Station/Citizens' Recycling & Disposal Facility West Ox Road, Fairfax Monday - Saturday: 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Accept all items accepted at Park and Ride plus appliances, used auto batteries, yard debris, and used motor oil. Some fees apply. Hazardous household waste is accepted only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For a list of accepted hazardous waste and how to prepare it, see or call The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality advises to dispose of medicine by (1) remove the medications from the pill bottle and place in a container with a lid or into a sealable baggie. (2) If the medication is solid, crush it or add water to dissolve it. Mix in something to
7 make medications undesirable (kitty litter, coffee grounds) to pets and children. As an added safety precaution, place the baggie in another sealable container. Throw in trash.
