PRODUCT CATALOGUE independent living Ireland The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned Maya Angelou
Who we are? Independent Living Ireland s (ILI) vision is to provide telecare and assistive living technology solutions in support of digital re-ablement and independent living for older people, those with disabilities and with general health issues. This is introduced to improve quality of life and personal dignity, to give peace of mind and ease the burden of care on family and friends while reducing the overall level of re-admissions to hospitals. We have established demonstration and information centres in both Athlone and Ballyconnell which allow visitors to view products and sample the equipment used, all explained by ILI staff. The centres also have an important role in raising awareness of the benefits of telecare in the wider community. ILI are commited to training on both a general awareness and a more technical level for a wide range of groups such as primary care teams, therapists and social workers. While the centres showcase the latest in telecare and assistive living technologies in an environment that mimics a typical home setting, this document provides an overview of some of the products and services we have available including our bespoke assessment packages. Along with the advice of an ILI professional, this will help health sector groups, families and carers to choose the best, most suited, technology solutions.

CASE STUDIES Intellectual Disabilities Steve, is 42 and has intellectual disabilities; he has been living independently for the last six years since leaving a long stay hospital. For most of that time he has had a support worker coming in to make his meals, to do his washing for him and make sure that he maintains his levels of hygiene. He has been staying with him overnight because Steve has a record of having had an epileptic seizure ten years ago. Due to recent cutbacks there are no longer the resources for an overnight carer which suits Steve because he feels that he is able to cope on his own. However, since he started living independently, Steve has forgotten or lost his keys three times and subsequently the door locks needed to be changed at additional expense to his support budget. There are two options to manage this situation: A key safe outside his property where the key to his home is kept - it would mean that he no longer would need to take a key with him; or A fingerprint door lock - which allows keyless entry by Steve and by any support workers whose prints have been registered. After considering the options, it was deemed that a fingerprint door lock would be the preferred choice as it would avoid the risk of Steve forgetting to put the key back in the safe after use. There is also a danger that Steve may become a victim of hate crimes at the hands of local youths when they realise that he is vulnerable and has nobody in the house with him overnight. To improve security at home and to offer Steve an easy way to call for assistance a panic button is provided inside the front door which links through his Care Unity dispersed alarm unit. The panic button can be used to trigger a silent alarm if Steve is concerned about a strange caller at his door. The telecare system based around the Care Unity also doubles as a security alarm when Steve is away from the premises. This can be turned on when Steve is leaving by using the same panic button situated at the front door. To remind Steve to set the alarm a motion activated Memo Minder is installed near to the front door. This offers a voice prompt each time Steve is leaving the premises. (Camera door) Steve s carers noted that there has always been a difficulty regarding Steve s attention to hygiene. The real problem is that he does not like assistance while he is taking a shower but has difficulty judging the temperature of the water when he is filling a bath. As with the keys, there is a danger that Steve may be distracted when he is running a bath leading to a risk of flooding. A magi-plug is installed in the bath which will allow water to flow through the device down the plug hole when the water-level in the bath exceeds half a metre. As many as 40% of people with severe learning disabilities
have epilepsy. While Steve s condition is low to moderate, there is still the risk of an epileptic seizure at night. A convulsive seizure detection system was installed in his bed to negate this risk. The mat will alert an on-call carer in the event of a prolonged seizure.. 16 Plesio-care John is an elderly diabetic living with his daughter Jean. He smokes and drinks regularly and his daughter is worried about his lifestyle habits. He often smokes when he is lying in bed even though he is not supposed to. To reduce the risk of fire, John s room is sprayed with Fire Check flame retardant spray which is an interior flame retardant for most fibers. An additional smoke detector which speaks to John if smoking is detected is also installed to encourage John to change his habit of smoking in the room. As John wears a hearing aid, in the instance of a fire a vibrating pillow is installed to alert John while he is sleeping. Due to his fondness of drink John often wets the bed which causes considerable discomfort at night. An enuresis mat is installed to alert his daughter should he wet the bed. As she is situated in the next room this alert can be responded to quickly and the mat can be easily cleaned, dried and replaced. readings reach dangerous levels. Finally a dietary monitoring app allows John to keep track of his daily diet and offers suggestions on how to improve this. John and his daughter can collaborate and use these applications together to improve John s lifestyle at a very low cost. Products Fire Check Spray Speaking Smoke Detector Enuresis Mat Care Alert Transmitter Android Smart TV Dongle To further monitor and improve John s lifestyle habits and offer an alternative source of social activity an inexpensive smart TV dongle is installed allowing him to access a range of applications from the comfort of this living room. Skype is one such application and allows John to talk with an old friend who has recently been placed in a nursing home some distance away. SiDiary diabetes application connects to John s glucose meter and alerts his daughter, via text message, should his blood sugar
Dementia Margaret is a widow aged 74. Her nearest relative, Shane her son, lives in Liverpool and only manages to visit every 3 months. Since his last visit he has become wary of his mother s condition and is worried that she may be suffering from an early onset of dementia. Margaret is prone to calling him late at night and seems to be a little disorientated by the changes from night and day. To ensure Margaret s condition was fully assessed a Just checking system was installed to monitor her, for a four week period. This system looks at the structure of the day by monitoring her activities throughout the house using a range of motion sensors. At the end of the four week period a report was issued highlighting such issues as her disturbed sleeping patterns. Products Care Unity+ Just Checking Fridge Notices Autostop Cock Day/Night Clock Memo Minder Keysafe Pivotell Automatic Pill Dispenser A further assessment was carried out in this period by sitting down with Margaret and her son to discuss her needs, worries and the risks involved with living alone. It was noted that Margaret recently left the bathroom taps running; almost causing a flood in the house. She also forgot to take her keys with her from time to time when she was leaving to go to the local church.
Risk of Falling Doris is a proud independent woman aged 81. She is particularly frail at just 42 kgs and has high blood pressure resulting in her being prescribed new medication which requires additional pills at various stages throughout the day. Her family, the closest of whom lives over 200kms away, are worried that these recent changes in habits my disorientate Doris and increase the risk of her falling in the home. Every hour that an individual is left on the floor waiting for assistance results in an additional day in hospital. There are many options available to detect falls in the home. These include: Wrist worn watch. Waist worn detector fixed to a belt or pants. Doris may easily forget to take her medicine with the recent changes to her schedule. To assist her with this a Pivotell automatic pill dispenser will alert Doris each time she is required to take her medication. This device can be carried outside the home in a handbag if needs be. Products Pivotell Automatic Pill Dispenser Fall Detector Automatic Lights Bed Pad Strip Alarm In this instance it is deemed appropriate to supply Doris with a wrist worn watch detector as there is the added risk of a waist worn device damaging her hip due to her frailty should she fall directly on it. To further reduce the risk of falls through the home automatic lights are installed linked to a timed bed pad. These lights will switch on and illuminate a route for Doris when she gets up from her bed at night to use the bathroom or the kitchen. The bed pad will trigger an alarm should Doris not return to her bed after a set time i.e. 20 minutes. The bathroom is secured in the event of a fall by installing a strip alarm. This alarm which lines a section of the floor, allows Doris to alert trigger a call should she fall in the bathroom.
Sensory Alert System For people with visual or hearing difficulties, sensory products can be used to alert them that a telecare alarm has been activated. Working with the Carer Alert and CareUnity carephone to provide the security of a 24 hour control centre, should the onsite carer be unable to respond locally. When a telecare alarm is activated, the Carer Alert or CareUnity carephone will go into alarm condition, it will alert the user or carer using an audible tone whilst giving a visual indication. The Sensory Solutions equipment can work standalone if needed as well as in conjunction with a number of products we provide. If used as a standalone item it can be configured to identify the calling transmitter such as a door bell or telephone ring. This system allows users who have sensory impairments to be alerted to a telecare sensor activation. This can be particularly important in cases of smoke detectors as it would alert the user and allow them to safely vacate the property. A 24 hour monitoring centre can be alerted simultaneously. This system can also be used to alert onsite carers, who may themselves have a sensory impairment, that a telecare sensor has been activated.

Simply record a message of your choosing and when the infrared beam detects somebody approaching the exit the recorded message is played in a friendly and recognisable voice, for example: Don t forget your keys, Dad. The audio is of high quality and crystal clear. The Memo Minder has been proven to be extremely helpful for sufferers of Alzheimer s & Dementia. Cookerguard The Cooker Guard is a standalone device aiming to reduce all risk of fire linked to the misuse of an electric hob or cooker. The Cooker Guard helps elderly people to live independently and safely. Should the user unintentionally leave the cooker on, the Cooker Guard will automatically turn the cooker off before the temperature gets too high or when the pre-set time has elapsed. The Cooker Guard monitors temperature and time. It automatically turns the cooker off if the temperature is too high or when the pre-set time has elapsed. The Cooker Guard does not reset unless someone comes and turns off the cooker manually.
Bath Temperature Alert This bath temperature and level alert can assist you in running a bath providing you with audible beeps for the water level and an alarm for the temperature. Attach the alert to the inside of the bath using the suction cup, and when the water touches the two metallic prongs audible beeps will inform you that the water is at the desired level. An alarm will sound if the water temperature goes above or below the range you set. Red Tableware Kit The red variant of this deluxe 10 piece dining set can help Alzheimer s sufferers to distinguish the colour of food enabling them to enjoy their food and eat regularly. The contoured rim design of the bowl and dish allows food to be scooped easiliy onto utensils making them ideal for single handed use. Research has shown that items such as bold coloured tableware (in particular the colour red) can help sufferers distinguish the colour of food, enabling them to enjoy more and possibly increase their food and liquid intake by as much as 25% and 84% respectively. Day & Night Clock The Dementia Day Clock is aimed at helping people living with dementia by simply and clearly displaying the time of day as morning, afternoon, evening or night. People living with dementia can lose the ability to recognise what the time is and even whether it is day or night. This can cause many challenges for them and for their primary carers.
Lifestyle Monitoring Just Checking is an activity monitoring system used for the assessment and care planning of people with dementia, living in their own homes or people with learning disabilities in shared living accommodation. It monitors the movement of a person in their familiar environment and generates a chart of activity, on-line, which enables to tailor care that meets individual needs without intruding or undermining their independence. The system is simple. Movement sensors in the home generate a chart of daily living activity, which can be viewed on-line. It is easy to install, doesn t need broadband, and it s all done without the need for video cameras. It gives an up-to-the-minute picture as a person gets on with their daily life. Without depriving them of their privacy. You can set alerts to let you know if things are not quite as expected. Just Checking could make the difference between your loved one going into care and being able to stay living in their own home for as long as possible. You ll be able to see when help is needed, and when it s not. You ll know if your loved one has had a good night s rest and if care visits have arrived as expected. You can see when they are in or out and whether there are visits to the kitchen at mealtimes. Set alerts for: Not up and about Visitor late Exit Door left open
