3 1 Introduction This document provides an overview as well as step by step instruction required to complete frequently accessed tasks on the web site. You may be familiar with some of the tasks, many of the steps resemble using Microsoft Word. In this document we will cover: Creating a login Logging in Using the file manager Using the video library Creating an online classroom Adding a page to your classroom Adding a picture gallery Adding an event to the calendar Posting class assignments Posting links Blogs Should this document not provide sufficient information and/or contain misleading information, please contact techonology@bsd111.org or submit a helpdesk request by following this link. 10/15/2014 Page 3 of 21
4 2 Creating a login account All staff have the ability to access the new web site, everyone s account has been staged. Follow these steps to create a secure login account. 1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the icon on your taskbar 2. In the address bar navigate to the following address 3. With the homepage loaded scroll to the bottom of the page and click on CMS Login 4. On the SchoolPointe CMS Login page click the New Online Classroom User link 10/15/2014 Page 4 of 21
5 5. You will be prompted to enter your address. Please type your district address in the field provided. Click Send when ready. 6. At this point, please check your and note the temporary password that was sent. 7. Your browser should still be at the SchoolPointe CMS Login screen. Please enter your address and the temporary password you received, followed by clicking Login. 8. Once logged in on the right hand side under My Options please click Reset My Password. 9. Please change the temporary password to something secure and easier to remember. You may use your district provided Active Directory / PowerSchool password. The changed password will take effect the next time you log on to the website. 10/15/2014 Page 5 of 21
6 3 Managing homepage settings Your homepage is visible by everyone, it is a useful resource for students and parents. It allows the teacher to introduce themselves, provide contract information, post upcoming events and activities as well as classroom information. Follow these steps to edit your teacher page. 3.1 Editing Teacher Contact Information 1. At the SchoolPointe Content Management System page click Online Classroom 2. Click Edit Teacher Contact Information 3. In the editor window you may provide your address or school phone number and other contact info. Once your information is entered click Save Teacher Description >> Note: By providing your address, you subject yourself to receiving spam. 10/15/2014 Page 6 of 21
7 3.2 Editing Teacher Bio 1. At the SchoolPointe Content Management System page click Online Classroom 2. Edit your Teacher Bio on the My Homepage main page using the editor provided. Click Save Page >> when complete. 10/15/2014 Page 7 of 21
8 3.3 Changing your picture 1. At the SchoolPointe Content Management System page click Online Classroom 2. Click on the default stock photo to add image 3. On the Add/Change Staff Image window click Choose File 4. The SchoolPointe File Manager will open. Here you are able to select a picture located on your computer and upload it to the site. 9 5. Browse to the location where you have your picture saved, select it, and click Open. 6. Once you hit Open this will bring you back to the Add/Change Staff Image window, here you ll notice the name of you picture file will be displayed. Click Upload Image to submit your changes. Note: Uploading and managing your files will be discussed in detail in a later section of this document. 10/15/2014 Page 9 of 21
10 3.4 Adding a Classroom 1. At the SchoolPointe Content Management System page click Online Classroom 2. Click Add New Classroom located on top right hand side 3. Enter a Classroom Title in the window that appeared on the screen. Once you have the name entered click Save Classroom >>. 10/15/2014 Page 10 of 21
11 3.4.1 Creating Classroom Announcements 1. With the classroom created, let s add some content to the page. We ll start by adding an announcement. Edit the classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. With the classroom open, locate the Class Announcements section and click Add Announcement. 3. In the Add/Edit Class Announcement window, you must provide an announcement title. Provide a brief description of the announcement. Click Save Announcement >>. 10/15/2014 Page 11 of 21
12 3.4.2 Creating Classroom Assignments 1. Classroom assignments is an easy way for parents and students to keep track of homework. To add a homework / classroom assignment, edit the classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. With the classroom open, locate the Class Assignments section and click Add Assignment. 3. In the Add/Edit Class Assignments window, you must provide an assignment title. Provide a brief description of the assignment. Click Save Assignment >>. 10/15/2014 Page 12 of 21
13 3.4.3 Creating Calendar Events 1. While on your homepage, to add a calendar event to your calendar click Add Event located under My Calendar. 2. In the Add/Edit Event window, you must provide an event title. Provide a brief description of the event. Click Save Event >>. 10/15/2014 Page 13 of 21
14 3.4.4 Creating Classroom Accessible Files & Links 1. Class files and links are an easy way for teachers to share digital content with students and parents. To add a file or link, edit the classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. With the classroom open, locate the Class Files / Links section and click Add Link. 3. In the Add/Edit Class Link window, you must provide Web Site Address; title and description are optional. Click Save Link >>. 10/15/2014 Page 14 of 21
15 3.4.5 Creating a Classroom Image Gallery 1. Classroom Image Gallery allows teachers to share pictures of their class with students and parents. To create a gallery, edit the classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. Locate the Classroom Image Gallery section and click Add New Gallery. 4. In the Add Image(s) to Class Slideshow window, you may provide a caption. Click Choose File, select the images you would like add to the gallery. For help uploading files, please reference the File Manager section in this document. Once you have all images selected and uploaded click Add Images to Slideshow >>. 10/15/2014 Page 15 of 21
16 4 Using the File Manager The file manager makes it easy for teachers to upload, organize, and share their files. You can upload document files, worksheets, pictures, and other classroom content. Once the files are uploaded they are ready for use on your teacher site. The below steps will outline how to upload and manage files using the file manager. 4.1 Uploading files 1. On the new website, login to CMS. Once logged on locate the My Options section on the right had side and click File Manager. 2. Once the file manager is loaded, locate and click the Add Files button. 3. A new dialog window will be displayed allowing you to browse files on your local hard drive and upload to the web site. Locate the file you wish to upload and click Open. Repeat this step if you would like to upload more than one file. 10/15/2014 Page 16 of 21
17 4. Once you have all your files selected, you should be at the file manager window. Notice all your files listed in the Upload Files To: section, click Start Upload. 10/15/2014 Page 17 of 21
18 4.2 Uploading videos 1. On the new website, login to CMS. Once logged on locate the My Options section on the right had side and click Video Library. 2. Once the video library opens, locate and click the Add Files button. 3. A new dialog window will be displayed allowing you to browse files on your local hard drive and upload to the web site. Locate the video file you wish to upload and click Open. 10/15/2014 Page 18 of 21
19 4. Once the video upload is complete, the video will be placed in the processing queue. After the video is added to the processing queue, it is ok to leave the page. When the video has been processed it will be removed from the processing queue and ready to use. Please note the maximum file size is 500MB. 10/15/2014 Page 19 of 21
20 5 Blogs Allow teachers, students, and parents to post comments and other thoughts regarding various topics. The teacher needs to approve all comments made by students or parent before the comments show up in the blog. Every Classroom created has the ability to have their own blog. 5.1 Creating a blog 1. To create a blog in a classroom edit the classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. With the classroom open, locate and click the Manage Blog link at the top of the page. 3. Next Click Add Blog Post. 4. In the Add Blog Post window, you must give the post a title. Use the editing tools to style your post as you please. If you like for students, parents, and other visitors to comment on your blog be sure to check the Allow for Comments to be Posted checkbox. 21 5.2 Approving Blog Comments 1. Open your existing blog for a given classroom by clicking the classroom name in the top right hand side. 2. With the classroom open, locate and click the Manage Blog link at the top of the page. 3. Click the Approve Submitted Comments link to either approve or discard comments 10/15/2014 Page 21 of 21
