3 Description of the Profession* The profession of diagnostic medical sonography includes general sonography, cardiac sonography, vascular technology, and various subspecialties. The profession requires judgment and the ability to provide appropriate health care services. General sonographers, cardiac sonographers, and vascular technologists are highly skilled professionals qualified by education to provide patient services using diagnostic techniques under the supervision of a licensed doctor of medicine or osteopathy. The general sonographer, cardiac sonographer, and vascular technologist may provide this service in a variety of medical settings where the physician is responsible for the use and interpretation of appropriate procedures. General sonographers, cardiac sonographers, and vascular technologists assist physicians in gathering data necessary to reach diagnostic decisions. The general sonographer, cardiac sonographer, and vascular technologist are able to perform the following: Obtain, review, and integrate pertinent patient history and supporting clinical data to facilitate optimum diagnostic results; Perform appropriate procedures and record anatomic, pathologic, and/or physiologic data for interpretation by a physician; Record, analyze, and process diagnostic data and other pertinent observations made during the procedure for presentation to the interpreting physician; Exercise discretion and judgment in the performance of sonographic and/or other diagnostic services; Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patients and colleagues; Act in a professional and ethical manner; Provide patient education related to medical ultrasound and/or other diagnostic vascular techniques, and promote principles of good health. * Taken from the Essentials and Guidelines for Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, For additional information on the profession please visit: Page 1

4 The UMDNJ-School of Health Related Profession s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is located on the Scotch Plains campus. It is a fifteen month program starting in September and covers both clinical and didactic instruction in abdominal, obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal neurosonography ultrasound. The course of study includes Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Pathophysiology, Ultrasound Physics, Instrumentation and Applied Sonography. Clinical training is provided in active Radiology and Perinatal Testing departments equipped with the most advanced ultrasound equipment. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program offers 3 educational options. Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Technologies Second Bachelor of Science The curriculum for the professional component is the same for all options. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate will receive a certificate or a BS degree and will be eligible for examination by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers ( Accreditation Status The School of Health Related Professions, as part of UMDNJ, is fully accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. 5 Clinical Affiliations The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program provides experiences with varied populations in a wide variety of health care settings by utilizing a large number of health care facilities throughout NJ. Students complete clinical rotations in a variety of facilities. 6 Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography Admission Requirements Applicants for the program must have Prerequisite 1 or Prerequisite 2 Prerequisite 1 completed a two: year accredited Allied Health Education program, (i.e.: Radiography, Nursing, etc.) Prerequisite 2 completed the equivalent college coursework (approximately 60 college credits) All applicants must have completed the following or equivalent college course prerequisites: *Human Anatomy & Physiology I (3-4 credits) *Human Anatomy & Physiology II (3-4 credits) *Medical Terminology (on-line or college credit course) College Algebra or Statistics (3 credits) General Physics (3 credits) English (3 credits) *It is recommended that these courses be completed within 5 years of application to program. Suggested coursework: Introduction to Computers, knowledge of PowerPoint. All students with a GPA of 2.75 and above are encouraged to apply. 7 Bachelors of Science in Allied Health Technologies Admission Requirements The Department of Medical Imaging Sciences - Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program offers a joint Bachelor of Science Degree in Allied Health Technologies in collaboration with the following institutions: Bloomfield College Fairleigh Dickinson University Felician College Georgian Court College New Jersey City University Ramapo College of New Jersey Rutgers University - Newark The degree offers a unique combination of a liberal arts education and entry into the postgraduate health career of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The first six semesters of liberal study is taken at the partner institution (minimum of 90 semester hours). General education courses lead toward a concentration in biology with requirements in math, physics, chemistry and biology. The clinical track is selected in the late sophomore or early junior year through an application to UMDNJ-SHRP. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 and have met or be scheduled to complete all prerequisite requirements prior to the planned date for enrolling in the 4th year specialization coursework. Students admitted to the 4th year professional phase are selected by an Admissions Committee from among those applicants meeting these minimum standards. Medical Terminology is an essential foundation for the courses in the program. It is suggested that students accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program take this course at a college or online prior to the start of the program in September. 8 Second Bachelors of Science Admission Requirements Prospective students must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited United States University or College. All applicants must have completed the following or equivalent college course prerequisites: *Human Anatomy & Physiology I (3-4 credits) *Human Anatomy & Physiology II (3-4 credits) *Medical Terminology (on-line or college credit course) College Algebra or Statistics (3 credits) General Physics (3 credits) English (3 credits) *It is recommended that these courses be completed within 5 years of application to program. Students accepted into the program must be CPR certified for either Allied Health Professionals or Adult/Pediatrics prior to starting their clinical practicum. In selecting students for admission, the Program looks for evidence of character, potential, motivation and sound academic preparation. The Program attempts to choose applicants, who represent the greatest promise of profiting from opportunities offered by the School of Health Related Professions, preparing them for a positive contribution to the field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and community. There is no advance standing in this program. Enrollment and continued enrollment of accepted students is conditional, based on the results of certain laboratory tests and fulfillment of immunization requirements in order to determine their ability to perform all essential function. 10 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Return to DXMS4151 Cross-Sectional Abdominal Sonography Credits 2 The objective of this course is to provide the student with a basic knowledge of crosssectional abdominal sonography. Emphasis is placed on the sonographic appearance of abdominal organs, vessels and their anatomical relationship to each other. (Lecture: 18 hours - Lab: 25 hours ) DXMS4171 Gynecological Sonography I Credits 2 This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of sonography of the female pelvis. Emphasis will be placed on the appearance of normal pelvic anatomy. Through lectures, case review and lab the normal appearances of the female reproductive system will be discussed. (Lecture: 20 hours - Lab: 15 hours, Web-Enhanced) DXMS4100 Patient Care for the Imaging Professional Credits 2 This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of the sonography profession and patient care skills necessary for a technologist in the clinical setting. Important to the discussion is an understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities imaging professionals take on when providing care to patients. Students will be required to successfully complete a CPR certification course and the UMDNJ WEB-CT course on HIPPA compliance. Students must obtain CPR certification on their own. (Lecture: 15 hours - Independent Learning: 30 hours) DXMS4111 Acoustic Physics I Credits 2 This course acquaints students with the modes of operation and imaging techniques that relates to high frequency sound production. A requirement for the clinical practice of sonographers is an in-depth understanding of the characteristics of ultrasound and its interaction with tissue. An important element of this is quality control and the biological effects of sound on human tissue. This course includes lecture and demonstration. (Lecture: 30 hours) Page 8

11 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DXMS4161 Obstetrical Sonography I Credits 2 The general objective of this course is to provide the student with a basic knowledge of Obstetrical Sonography. Emphasis will be placed on variations of the normal appearance of the female gravid uterus. Discussion will include fetal development, obstetrical measurements, sonographic appearance, and sonographic approach to the gravid uterus. Through lectures, case review and group discussion the normal appearance of the fetus will be examined. (Lecture: 30 hours, Web-Enhanced) DXMS4131 Abdominal Sonography I Credits 3 The general objective of this course is to provide the student with a basic knowledge of abdominal anatomy, physiology and abdominal sonography. Emphasis is placed on discussion of the normal sonographic appearance of abdominal organs and systems. (Lecture: 30 hours - Lab: 30 hours, Web-Enhanced) Page 9

12 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Return to DXMS4009 Introduction to Clinical Practice Credits 1 The general objective of this course is to introduce the student to the clinical environment. The course will provide the student with an understanding of the daily activities within an ultrasound department. It will provide the student with clinical and practical experience in support of classroom studies. (Clinic: 84 hours) DXMS4172 Gynecological Sonography II Credits 2 This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of the sonographic examination of the female pelvis. Sonographers are required to differentiate normal from abnormal processes. Through lectures, case review, and group discussion, emphasis will be placed on how the sonographic appearance of the female reproductive system changes with the presence of pathology. Also the utilization of Duplex and Color Doppler Imaging & Spectral analysis display will be discussed. (Lecture: 30 hours, Web-Enhanced) (Prerequisite: DXMS4171) DXMS4199 Clinical Practice I Credits 5 The general objective of this course is to provide the student with clinical and practical experience in support of classroom studies. The student gains the ability to demonstrate the structures of the abdomen, gravid and non-gravid female pelvis utilizing sonography when the student has pre-knowledge of the patient s condition. (Clinic: 468 hours) (Prerequisite: DXMS4009) DXMS4212 Acoustic Physics II Credits 2 This course reiterates in a more in-depth approach the material presented in Acoustic Physics I. Students will re-examine the modes of operation and imaging techniques that relates to high frequency sound production, characteristics of ultrasound and its interaction with tissue, quality control and the biological effects of sound on human tissue. (Lecture: 30 hours, Web Enhanced) (Prerequisite: DXMS4111) Page 10

13 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DXMS4262 Obstetrical Sonography II Credits 2 This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of the sonographic examination of the gravid female pelvis. Sonographers are required to differentiate normal from abnormal processes. Through lectures, case review, and group discussion, emphasis will be placed on abnormal fetal development. Also the utilization of Duplex and Color Doppler Imaging & Spectral analysis display will be discussed. (Lecture: 30 hours, Web-Enhanced ) (Prerequisite: DXMS4161) DXMS4232 Abdominal Sonography II Credits 3 This course is a continuum of Abdominal Ultrasound I. Sonographers are required to differentiate normal from abnormal processes. Emphasis is placed on discussion of how the sonographic appearance of the upper abdomen changes with the presence of pathology. Surgical implications and specific scanning approaches are addressed. This course includes lecture, case review, and group discussions. (Lecture: 45 hours, Web-Enhanced ) (Prerequisite: DXMS4131, DXMS4151) Page 11

14 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Return to DXMS4240 Neurosonography Credits 1 This course will provide the student with a basic knowledge of neurosonography. The normal and abnormal appearance of the infant and neonatal brain will be discussed through lectures, case review, and group discussion. This course will provide the student with an in-depth analysis of the sonographic representations in neurosonography. Emphasis will be placed on variations of the normal appearance of the neonatal brain. Also an in-depth analysis of the sonographic representations of pathological conditions associated with neonatal intracranial abnormalities, including congenital abnormalities, infections, hemorrhage, and tumors will be discussed. (Lecture: 12 hours, Web-Enhanced, Independent Study) DXMS4299 Clinical Practice II Credits 3 The student acquires skills to carry out sonographic examinations and gains the ability to recognize normal and abnormal sonographic patterns in the abdomen, female pelvis, fetus, and neonatal brain. 15 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS DXMS4350 Critique & Clinical Correlation Credits 2 The objective of this course is to provide advanced discussions and critical review of obstetric, gynecologic and abdominal sonography. Emphasis is placed on correlating underlying pathophysiology with its sonographic presentation, related diagnostic procedures, and the role of sonography in the diagnostic workup. Students will be required to present ultrasound cases using PowerPoint. (Lecture: 30 hours, Web-Enhanced) (Prerequisites: DXMS4172, DXMS4232, DXMS4262, DXMS4009, DXMS4199, DXMS4299) DXMS4360 Introduction to Echocardiography Credits 1 The objective of this course is to provide the student with an overview of cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and clinical applications of ultrasound, specifically echocardiography. (Lecture: 20 hours - Lab: 4 hours) VSTC4370 Intro to Noninvasive Vascular Testing Credits 2 The course will provide an introduction to vascular anatomy, disease states important to vascular diagnosis, duplex Doppler sonography, and plethysmography. (Lecture: 20 hours - Lab: 32 hours) DXMS4399 Clinical Practice III Credits 7 The student acquires skills to carry out sonographic examinations and gains the ability to recognize normal and abnormal sonographic patterns in the abdomen, female pelvis, and neonatal head. 16 Transportation The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is located in Scotch Plains, NJ, which is accessible from the Garden State Parkway, and Routes 22 and 78. Clinical experience sites are located throughout New Jersey. A car is required for travel to clinical sites and to the Scotch Plains Campus. The proximity of UMDNJ to New York City extends opportunities for varied entertainment and recreational activities for students.
