3 Description of the Profession Psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, full community integration and improved quality of life for persons who have been diagnosed with any mental health condition that seriously impairs functioning. Psychiatric rehabilitation practioners focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and statisfied in the living, working, learning and social environments of their choice. To meet the demand for qualified professionals in this area, UMDNJ s School of Health Related Professions (SHRP) now offers a full psychiatric rehabilitation career ladder - from the Associate s through the Ph.D. degree. This brochure describes the first two steps on the career ladder: the Associate of Science degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and the Bachelor of Science degree in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology. Both undergraduate programs are offered in conjunction with other educational institutions. Associate of Science Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation This program will provide you with the basic skills and rehabilitation techniques to begin your career. As part of the program, you will complete two semesters of fieldwork at a community service agency. Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology This program offers a dual major in psychology and psychiatric rehabilitation. The program will prepare you for a variety of professional roles, for career advancement and for graduate studies. As with the AS program, fieldwork assignments are an important element of the curriculum. Page 1
4 Frequently Asked Questions What is the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)? UMDNJ is the state university of the health sciences. There are eight schools on five campuses across New Jersey. UMDNJ is the largest fully accredited health sciences center of its kind in the nation and is a leader in health care research, education, and patient care. What is SHRP? SHRP stands for the School of Health Related Professions, one of eight schools at UMDNJ. Our specialization is two-fold: (1) Preparing students for entry-level health care careers. (2) Educating health professionals for career advancement. What types of degrees and programs does SHRP offer? SHRP has over 35 programs at all academic levels. Many programs, including the Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Psychiatric Rehabilitation programs, are offered in conjunction with one or more of our twenty-eight affiliate institutions. Page 2
5 What does it mean that SHRP has affiliations with other institutions? Affiliations are partnerships that SHRP has formed with other higher education institutions to provide you with the best education possible. These partners are called affiliates. SHRP offers all of the health-related courses and the affiliates offer the general education, basic sciences, and liberal arts courses. What affiliates are associated with the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Associate Degree Program? The affiliates for this program are Middlesex County College, Union County College, Warren County Community College, Cumberland County College, and Essex County College What affiliates are associated with the Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology Bachelor s Degree Program? The affiliate for this program is Kean University. Psychosocial Rehabilitation Associate of Science Program Where do I apply? Start by applying to one of the program affiliates: Middlesex County College, Union County College, Warren County Community College, Cumberland County College, or Essex County College (contact information is on the last pages of this brochure). Initially, you will also register, pay tuition and apply for financial aid at the affiliate. Once you have completed a minimum of 18 credits of the general education requirements (see next page), you will qualify for admission to the professional phase of the program and will be admitted to UMDNJ-SHRP, where you will also register, pay tuition and receive financial aid if qualified. 6 How many credits will I need to graduate? You will need a total of credits to graduate, depending upon which affiliate you choose. The credits of general education courses are provided by the affiliate or may be transferred from other schools. The 30 credits of psychosocial rehabilitation courses are provided by UMDNJ-SHRP. Where do I take classes? You will take all general education classes at the affiliate. Psychosocial rehabilitation courses are offered at SHRP s Scotch Plains and Stratford campuses (Note: Some of the affiliates offer PSRT1101 and other first year PSRT courses on their campus; some PSRT courses are offered via the internet). Can I take course work full-time or part-time? You can take course work on either a full-time or part-time basis. What is the required coursework? At Middlesex County College the credits in general education include: 6 credits in English Composition 3 credits in Humanities Electives 6 credits in Psychology 4 credits in Biology 3 credits in Math 3 credits of Computer Science 1-3 credits of Physical Education and Health 3 credits of Sociology 3 credits in Philosophy At Union County College, Warren County Community College the 31 credits in general education include: 6 credits in English Composition 3 credits in Mathematics 6 credits in Psychology Page 4

8 Who will advise me during the program? The Program Director or assigned faculty from SHRP will advise you. What degree will I receive from this program? You will receive a joint Associate of Science Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation from SHRP and your affiliate. What will an Associate s Degree in Psychosocial Rehabilitation prepare me to do? Psychosocial Rehabilitation professionals provide community-based supports and services to people diagnosed with severe mental illnesses. There are career opportunities in a variety of psychiatric and community mental health settings, such as residential, partial care and supported employment programs. Page 6
9 Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology Bachelor of Science Program Where do I apply? Start by applying to Kean University, the program affiliate. Once you are accepted to Kean and have completed 40 credits, including at least 3 psychology and psychiatric rehabilitation courses, you will complete a second application for admission to the Dual Major Program in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology. These applications are available from the Kean Psychology Department. If you are accepted, you will be jointly admitted to the program by Kean University and UMDNJ-SHRP. Graduates of the AS Program in Psychosocial Rehabilitation are eligible to apply to the Dual Major Program at the same time that they are applying to Kean University and can obtain application materials from the UMDNJ- SHRP Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation. How many credits will I need to graduate? You will need 124 credits to graduate. Where do I take classes? You will take your general education and psychology classes at Kean University. You will take your psychiatric rehabilitation classes at SHRP s Scotch Plains campus. Can I take course work full-time or part-time? You will receive a joint Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology from SHRP and Kean University. What will a Bachelor s Degree in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology prepare me to do? Potential careers for graduates of this program include case manager, residential counselor, mental health counselor, habilitation counselor, employment specialist, job coach. In addition, this joint degree includes a psychology major that prepares students for graduate school options. Can I earn advanced standing in a graduate program by completing this bachelor s degree? Yes, up to 6 credits earned in the B.S. program can count towards either the M.S. in Psychiatric Rehabilitation or M.S. in Rehabilitation Counseling offered by SHRP. Page 9
12 Undergraduate Certificates in Psychiatric Rehabilitation The SHRP Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling Professions offers two undergraduate level certificate programs: a 15 credit Certificate in Evidence Based Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practice and an 18 credit Certificate in Psychiatric Rehabilitation. If you have a high school degree or equivalent and are unsure if you wish to pursue a college degree at this time, you may choose to enroll in one of these Certificate programs. These Certificate programs are provided by the UMDNJ-School of Health Related Professions in cooperation with UMDNJ s Center for Advanced and Continuing Education. Courses completed with a grade of C or better may be applied to the associates or bachelor s degree programs.
