4 Sustainability made easy The Wolseley Sustainable Building WOLSELEY SBC The Wolseley Sustainable Building Center is a purpose designed showcase for a massive range of more sustainable construction products. The award-winning building not only features the products in the fabric and building services but it has rapidly become a centre of excellence for advice and guidance regarding national availability of lower impact products. The building took 10 months to complete and was officially opened during May 2008 and as well as 2 display galleries and a 40 seat lecture theatre, the SBC allows access to many products which are normally not available to view, Through the clever uses of cut-away panels and viewing galleries visitors can experience a real working example of a sustainable building. In the first 2 years of operation the SBC has received over 12,000 visitors from a wide range of professionals, advisors, estate owners and government departments, all eager to understand the possibilities and practicalities of modern construction products. The BREEAM Excellent building has been featured in many publications and case studies throughout the industry and its location at Royal Leamington Spa is easily accessible by road, rail and air. In terms of building services the facility includes working examples of: Ground Source Heat Pumps Air Source Heat Pumps Biomass Boilers Solar Thermal Systems MicroCHP Photovoltaic Systems Ventilation Systems Water efficiency is demonstrated with: Low flush WC Suites Waterless Urinals Low Flow Taps Aerated showering products Rainwater Harvesting Greywater Harvesting The site features a sustainable urban drainage system including: Permeable paving Attenuation Systems 4

5 Sustainability made easy Sustainability made easy Center SUSTAINABLE BUILDING CENTER Training Area OFFICES AND MEETING ROOMS John Adams Barratt Developments plc It is a testament to your commitment to improving environmentally friendly and sustainable products that you have built such a good facility. In addition visitors will be able to experience a wide choice of insulants, building materials and lighting systems. The building continues to evolve reflecting the latest product and technology advances. Since opening there have been changes in lighting, roofing, heatpumps, photovoltaics, MVHR, street furniture and CHP. The building will continue to showcase new developments as they become commercially available. The dedicated team working from the building have extensive experience in the industry and they continue to monitor changes in regulation and incentive programmes ensuring that Plumb Center customers can fully exploit the flood of newly emerging opportunities. The latest exciting chapter to the development of the SBC is the establishment of training facilities to allow professionals to achieve nationally accredited skills training through a range of renewable and water saving courses. David Moran Linford Group Ltd The centre is a great showcase for seeing main stream sustainable construction products in action and clearly shows the commitment of Wolseley in taking seriously its role in the supply chain of sustainable construction products. Nick Dyke Taylor Wimpey Really quite surprised - the guide was excellent; very knowledgeable & enthusiastic which actually made the tour. Miles Thomas Castleoak Exceeded my expectations. Fantastic Visit. Will look to arrange future visits and invite our clients to attend also. 5

6 Sustainability made easy Skills for Sustainable Growth SKILLS FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH The carbon targets set by the Climate Change Act will demand some extraordinary demands on the construction industry, not only to deliver very low impact new buildings but to substantially refurbish the vast majority our 26 million dwellings and the 2.5 million non-domestic buildings. To hit the 2020 target of a 34% carbon reduction, we will have to substantially refurbish over 7 million homes. There will be many facets which will have to come together if the scale and pace of carbon reduction (plus water and waste) are to be achieved. Volume The construction industry employs in excess of 4,000,000 people in the UK. The Construction Skills Network has estimated that the fall in employment in the sector has been severe with a drop by approximately 375,000 workers from 2008 to Most recently, we have seen the demise of some larger companies and the subsequent redundancies. So at a time when particularly robust demands are to be made on construction, the industry has shrunk to historically low levels. This will require an active programme to re-engage former construction workers and to attract new entr\ants, particularly amongst school and college leavers. Structure The industry is notoriously disparate. It is disparate in terms of scale, location and ability. Of the 190,000 private contracting companies, over 180,000 employ between 1-13 staff and over 80,000 are one man businesses. At a local level builders may not even be officially recognised as such. These Training for construction must be local and preferably outside characteristics can make communication and engagement working hours. If training can be delivered at a location which is difficult. The common touch point is the materials going to be visited during a standard working day then so much supplier. On average, our customers visit our premises 3 the better. Many tradesmen have internet access and online times a week. The trade counter is seen as a key courses would definitely be popular. information source, either through point-of-sale or through the staff. Since a tradesman s time is money then any absence from work is regarded as lost earnings. This makes remote daytime training unpopular. 6

7 Sustainability made easy During 2011, Plumb Center are planning to open training centres in locations across the UK to provide customers with the opportunity to receive accredited training leading to recognised qualifications across a wide range of technologies. Skills The emergence of renewables is placing exceptional demands on installers. The traditional heating system in the UK is a gas boiler running a wet system through radiators. There are over 100,000 Gas Safe installers who are capable of fitting and maintaining this system. The construction industry is still defined by trades until you reach handymantype level. The new technologies are crossing traditional boundaries and skill-sets. For example solar thermal requires plumbing skills and roofing skills, heat pumps may require plumbing, civils and electrical skills. Do we provide integrated work teams, start a new skill (renewable installer) or hope that the large companies will be able to deliver the whole solution? Economics As the burden of regulation becomes ever more onerous, small businesses are finding the cost of training and certification a principal barrier to expansion. Manufacturers have been key to the economics of training by running courses themselves or by arrangements with selected colleges throughout the UK. We are looking creatively at how we can help our customers with training by arranging courses through third party providers, utilising loyalty programmes to pay for training, allowing our premises to be used for training, etc. The training partnership between Plumb Center and Sevenoaks Energy Academy provides customers to a wide range of courses which are nationally recognised and compliant with current government programmes. The first two training locations are established at Sevenoaks and Royal Leamington Spa, with more to be opened during the year. Depending on the location, courses may be available as follows: Solar thermal installer Heat pump installer (ground & air) Rainwater harvesting Solar pv Part L Part G Renewable energy awareness 7
