Today s Agenda Introduction and Generate Programme Overview, Paul McCormack, Innovation Manager, Belfast Met Dimplexrenewables An endless supply of energy, Brendan Mone, Technical Sales Representative, Glen Dimplex Northern Ireland EneryWise,Roy Bell, HeaT Programme Procurement Manager, The Strategic Investment Board Question and Answer Session Opportunity to register for the Generate Programme
What is Generate? Generate is a business support programme that offers businesses access to specialist industry support to avail of supply chain opportunities in the emerging markets for wind, marine, bio-energy, smart-grid and energy storage. Scale of opportunity within sectors: Offshore Wind 525 million (NI) 100 billion (UK) Bio-energy 100 billion (UK) Wave and Tidal 8 billion per year by 2030 (UK) Smart- Grid 1 billion (NI) 56 billion (UK)
Who is eligible? Regardless of what sector you are in, if you feel your company has the potential to enter the Renewable Industry Supply Chain, then simply register your interest today, talk to the Generate Team to confirm suitability for the programme and discuss potential projects The programme is limited to 60 small to medium businesses within the following Council areas: Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council Belfast City Council
How Generate Works Register your interest Discuss capability with Generate Team Complete business audit and capability opportunity profile Participate in Mentoring and Development programme Participate in Knowledge Transfer, Meet the Buyer and Collaborative Networks Generate new market revenue and business opportunities
Specialist Mentors Specialist one-to-one mentoring to help your business identify project opportunities or develop existing projects in the renewable industry The Generate Team: Paul McCormack Project Manager Ali Nicol Bio-Energy Paul Brewster Wave and Tidal James Kerlin Advanced Manufacturing Elias Dencker On and Offshore Wind Sally Shenton Offshore Wind Sam McCloskey Smart Grid Findhan Strain Composites
Success Story STAUFF SECURES NEW CONTRACT THANKS TO GENERATE Lisburn-based Stauff Ireland has successfully won a contract from a wind turbine maintenance company to replace parts in 400 Turbines across Ireland Martin Murray from Stauff Ireland explains: Following our entry onto the programme we worked closely with the Generate team and developed a plan for our expansion into the renewables sector. Our knowledge of the renewables sector was very limited but this was very quickly addressed through the support provided by the programme. We were thrilled to be awarded a major contract from a wind turbine maintenance company and we are working with Belfast Met sector specialists on developing an innovative preventative maintenance programme for turbines utilising wireless technologies, which will provide us with a completely new product range for the company and open significant new opportunities for expansion. I would recommend the Generate programme to any company who is already in the renewable energy industry or wants to diversify into it.

Complete heating and domestic hot water solution - replaces a conventional boiler Utilises on-site renewable energy Low running costs Low CO 2 emissions Other benefits No flames or combustible gases No CO emissions or annual safety inspections No bulk fuel purchase / storage issues Only requires electrical infrastructure Long life expectancy (20 years +) No reduction in performance over time Heat Pumps
How a Heat Pump Works Heat Pump efficiency is called the Coefficient of Performance (CoP) Ratio between electrical energy used and heat delivered E.g. 1kWh electrical energy to produce 3-4kWh heat = CoP 3.0 to 4.0 Or % efficient
The Future? Heat pumps are set to steal a significant share of the UK heating market from boiler manufacturers over the next few years Andrew Giles, BSRIA
Ground Source Heat Pumps Extract solar energy stored in the ground Collectors buried in the ground Flexible PE pipe Horizontal or vertical Water/glycol mix circulated through collectors to transfer heat from ground
Use latent heat in the ambient air as the heat source Can be installed indoors or outdoors Air Source Heat Pumps Operational down to -20 C Variability in temperature affects CoP and output throughout the year Good CoP s achieved in UK and Ireland due to relatively high ambient winter air temperatures
The Problems with ASHPs Water temperature: The majority of existing heating systems use radiators connected to a boiler designed to run at c 70 C. ASHPs normally run at up to 55 C Output at low temperature: the Nominal output of a heatpump is quoted at A7/W35, but heating system design temperature is minus 3 C Dimplex 2010
A Class of its own Outstanding performance and efficiency head and shoulders above the rest High output, high temperature setting new benchmarks Sophisticated heating, made simple not just a pretty face Innovative technology if you ve got it, flaunt it Complete system packages something of a crowd pleaser
