6 Making a referral to Child & Adolescent Psychological Health Service (Specialist CAMHS) Referral Criteria; we provide a specialist assessment & treatment service in the Community (tier 2) & Day Unit (Tier 3) for children with complex, persistent and severe mental health problems/illness. Life events Adverse Social Circumstances Behavioural Problems Developmental Problems Post abuse

GP s Senior Social Work Practitioners Specialist Education Behaviour Support Services Senior Health Professionals *Other professionals with knowledge of the child & family ( robust information) Letters are acceptable. 8 Referral continued Together with Paediatrics, Therapies, Educational Services we contribute to assessment & treatment of children with ADHD and Autistic Spectrum Disorders. In partnership with Health, Social Services, Education and Voluntary agencies encourage discussion prior to referral to ensure appropriate interventions. Unable to accept referral if referrers are proposing to or considering closing the case. Referrals discussed at weekly multidisciplinary meeting May write back for clarity or further info. Once accepted family questionnaire. (telephone the advice line if there are literacy/motivational concerns

9 For clarification/questions to consider Contact the PMHT / Use the Advice line (Tues, 9.30/11.00am) Is there an element of mental health risk needs assessment urgently? Does family/young person want to engage in psychological therapy and are able to commit? Are the symptoms suggestive of a psychiatric disorder? Are there issues that need to be assessed by one of the Specialist Services?

10 It is helpful for administrative purposes that you indicate which element of the service is required. If more than one element is relevant, opting for the most appropriate will not hamper timely access to other elements when appropriate. They will be considered by a multi-disciplinary team. 11 Emergency, Urgent & Severe Ongoing Risks Emergency = Immediate concerns about mental health state. Urgent = significant concerns about the risks. Severe/significant level of risk by or to. Assessment of risk following an episode of self harm resulting in Hospital admission. Emergencies requiring a very rapid response within 24 hours. Defining what meets emergency criteria is a clinically based decision following discussion with Specialist CAMHS Professional Urgent referrals are where the conditions may deteriorate into emergencies without a quick response. 2-4 weeks to see urgent referrals On Call Mon-Fri + Out of Hours

13 For clinical based interventions to be effective, it is important that families are open to alternative ways of understanding their child s difficulties and can commit to a therapeutic relationship. Please explore this with the family first. Children and young people often exhibit distress when faced with extra-ordinary life event or difficult circumstances, e.g. abuse, family change/disruption reactions to trauma bereavement. 14 Diagnostic Assessment &Treatment/Therapy Psychiatric diagnosis fall into three broad categories; Developmental disorders Anxiety/mood disorders Eating disorders Accurate diagnosis depends on detailed information from a number of sources.

15 Developmental Disorders; ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders Global Developmental Assessment Confirmation of no physical concerns Reports from Tier 1 (parenting) School report (2 IEP s completed) Referral has been made to specialist education services

16 Anxiety/Mood Disorders; Clinical Depression, OCD Exclusion of physical cause if somatic symptoms Confirmation of difficulties in multiple contexts over a period of time (6 wks) Impairment of daily functioning Information regarding interventions at Tier 1

17 Eating Disorders; Anorexia, Bulimia, Obesity. Current diet Height Weight Blood tests Blood pressure Co-morbid mood or anxiety symptoms Current level of activity
