Preface 125 years of Gustav Wolf 5 PASSING ON THE FLAME This year, our company, Gustav Wolf Seil- und Drahtwerke, can look back on a history spanning 125 years. A jubilee of this kind something that has become rather rare these days increases awareness for what previous generations built up and always makes us proud, because we are part of a tradition that we are constantly advancing. Thomas Morus once said:»tradition is not preserving the ashes, but passing on the flame«this is the attitude we live out at Gustav Wolf and this is why we can celebrate our jubilee with plenty of joy and optimism for the future. However, we don't want to neglect to reflect on our beginnings. The optimism and openness to risk with which our ancestors founded this company in 1887, is admirable. They realised the opportunities with which they were presented and believed in themselves. When the business division of wire ropes was transferred to Gütersloh in 1912 exactly 100 years ago this was the beginning of the international business. Gustav Wolf advanced further and further and also weathered both World Wars and their consequences. Today, Gustav Wolf is a modern company group with seven production bases worldwide, two logistic production sites and two sales offices underpin the firm's local service strategy. Until today, the Wolf family has always succeeded in enthusing its latest generation for their family company. This is not always an easy task, and yet Daniel Wolf is now part of the eighth generation to work at Gustav Wolf. Active responsibility towards the company and a sense of obligation towards what is achieved can also demand tough management and advanced, forward-looking strategies for the benefit of the employees. Our commemorative publication for our 125-year jubilee provides a brief insight into our company history. With the best wishes for a mutually successful future, Yours, Dr. Eng. Ernst Wolf Managing Director

6 125 years of Gustav Wolf Greetings BEST WISHES TO A COMPANY THAT HAS MADE REGIONAL HISTORY! MARIA UNGER, Mayor of Gütersloh 125 years of Gustav Wolf I cordially congratulate Gustav Wolf on behalf of the Council and the Administration of Gütersloh on achieving this impressive jubilee. At a time of rapid change such as we are experiencing today, company jubilees of this magnitude are very special. You can justifiably feel proud of what you have achieved. With a high level of aspiration for quality, you have succeeded in bringing marketable and successful innovations onto the market, and also in successfully adapting your firm to the changing prevailing conditions. With a love of experimentation and the courage to break the mould, over the past years you have succeeded in expanding your company to create a firm with an in- ternational reputation. Your company history is a real success story and that alone is something to celebrate. I wish you all the management team, the employees, business partners and guests - an enjoyable jubilee celebration, and that you can maintain your successful course with the strength and foresight needed in order to be able to shape the future as promisingly and successfully as you have the past. Maria Unger

Greetings 125 years of Gustav Wolf 7 DR. MARKUS MIELE, Managing Partner at Miele & Cie. KG That the Gustav Wolf company is now 125 years old is a very special occasion to celebrate, and for three reasons: firstly, the company is one of the most traditional and important private employers in our town. Secondly,»Wolf Wire«is one of those family-managed companies that, with their firstclass products, contribute to the outstanding reputation that medium sized German companies and German workmanship enjoy all over the world. And thirdly, the Wolfs are an outward looking, active and, where necessary, aggressive family business when it comes to ensuring the sustainability of the company and safeguarding the jobs that it provides. For generations, the Wolf family has been involved for in countless voluntary projects for the business community, for education and for innovation in our region. In this context Eduard Wolf, son of the founder, was one of the first chairmen of our Traders Association, and this tradition is now being continued by Dr. Ernst Wolf, as Deputy Chairman of our Traders Association and Chairman of both the Technical Unit for Metal and the plenary meeting of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. I wish you, my dear Ernst, and the staff at Gustav Wolf all the very best for the anniversary of your company. And I wish the company good luck and much success for the future. Markus Miele ORTWIN GOLDBECK, President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Ostwestfalen in Bielefeld The company history of Gustav Wolf GmbH & Co. KG is a great example of the kind of criteria that distinguish a successful family company from the Ostwestfalen region. On the one hand, there is the company management that has been passed down through generations and which is firmly anchored in the owning family. The company's name is now a hallmark of quality for the steel wires, steel cords and steel ropes that it has manufactured for 125 years. Starting as local wire rope maker, it has now become an internationally active, manufacturing company. Such a success story results in a set of responsibilities towards customers and employees. They expect technically sophisticated products that can only be designed and manufactured by highly qualified employees. And this commercial success also pays off for the production location. It is only thanks to companies that don't forget their»home«despite their international market success that the district of Gütersloh is able to hold its ground as strong industrial location in the Ostwestfalen region. And there is also another area in which the current owner Dr. Ernst Wolf is exemplary: in addition to his sense of corporate responsibility, he does a lot of voluntary work for his Chamber of Industry and Commerce. I know and appreciate him as a company director who isn't afraid to call a spade a spade, who takes on discussions and who fights for the interests of the local economy. Ortwin Goldbeck

years of Gustav Wolf Company history 125 YEARS OF GUSTAV WOLF FROM THE REGION INTO THE WORLD! This year, the traditional company Gustav Wolf Seil- und Drahtwerke GmbH & Co. KG is celebrating a rare and proud jubilee: Gustav Wolf has turned 125 and is able to look back on a long period of development from Bielefeld via Gütersloh to Europe and beyond into the world. When Karl Gustav Wolf, the descendant of a traditional rope-making family from Tanna in Thuringia, moved to Bielefeld to found a company for hemp rope called Gustav Wolf in 1887, he could never have suspected that this was the beginning of a success story that has so far lasted 125 years. The next generation went on to establish the business division for wire ropes that was transferred to Gütersloh in The growth of Gustav Wolf then gathered speed. Sales markets were continuously expanded, processes were extended, new production sites were established and the most modern technological standards were used, often having been developed in-house. We are determined to continue following the path that started in Gütersloh. This is what the Wolf family stands for as well as our employees, with all of their skills and knowledge. How it all began The family tradition of the Seilerhandwerk Wolf (Wolf rope trading) dates back even further than the foundation year of the company to the 18th century. Its first documented mention is in the year 1737, when Johann Christoph Wolf was working as a rope maker although it is highly likely that his forefathers occupied similar trades. Eventually, hemp became wire and wire became the basis for rope production. Today, Gustav Wolf formerly known as»drahtwolf«is an internationally acclaimed brand. With Daniel Wolf, son of Dr. Eng. Wolf, the eighth successive generation is now working for the company. The journey from the first wire production in Bielefeld in 1887 to today may have been long but at the same time it has also been exciting and has always had a fixed aim: the consistent objective of Gustav Wolf has always been to bring premium quality products onto the market - from hemp rope, to special wire rope for tyres or hydraulic hoses. This is what has made the company so successful. The era of excavator rope has long since ended and with new technical challenges new tasks and products have emerged. Today, Gustav Wolf wires are primarily used for elevator and crane systems. Worldwide. From Thuringia to Bielefeld Although the basis of the Gustav Wolf tradition is the rope making trade, with a proud history over many generations in Thuringia, the company story starts with its foundation in Bielefeld in 1887 by Karl Gustav Wolf. Wolf went from Thuringia to Westphalia because the centre of spinning and weaving in the Ravensberger Land region offered better opportunities for advancement in his trade. During the initial years, he mainly produced harness cords for Jacquard weaving machines, fire fighter cords and Manila hemp ropes. It proved to be a lucrative trade for the young businessman. His sons Eduard, Gustav and Karl also learned how to produce ropes and, with them, a modern approach entered the company: the brothers recognised that more and more

years of Gustav Wolf Company history 125 YEARS OF GUSTAV WOLF INTO THE FUTURE WITH THE STRENGTH OF TRADITION steam machines were being replaced by combustion engines and electrically driven motors and they, in turn, responded to this technical development: in addition to classic transmission hemp ropes they also started to produce wire ropes which turned out to be a very smart idea. From transmission ropes to wire It quickly became clear that transmission wire rope was the only conceivable technical solution for both the power and transport transmission of engines, and the new business division of wire ropes did good business. Production soon began suffering due to the lack of available space at the location in Stapenhorst Street in Bielefeld and it became necessary to relocate the wire rope production. The decision was made in favour of Gütersloh as, on the one hand, the wire rope INDEPENDENT: HANFWOLF IN BIELEFELD The independent company Hanfwolf Wolf GmbH & Co. KG was spun off from the Gustav Wolf Company in 1964 and operates in the areas of retail and assembly. Products: belts, slings, length stop accessories, packaging service, the sale of foil, bags, cardboard, tapes. Its headquarters are situated in Bielefeld, on the Potsdamer Street (photo). In addition to Roland Mahne and Peter Behrens, Dr. Ernst Wolf has been a Director of this firm since 1 August customers were located in the industrial area of the Rhineland/Westphalia they were not bound to Bielefeld and, on the other hand, the Wolf family was also offered an empty factory building in Gütersloh both near the rail station and offering a direct rail link. Up until World War I, the company did well. After the war, the Wolf brothers expanded their export business into Europe and then America. In-house steel wire drawing plant since 1924 A milestone in the development of the company was the foundation of its own steel wire drawing plant in Now, the hot-rolled primary material wire rod was able to achieve its special product quality through tempering in the patented furnace and by cold forming in the wire block. In addition to steel wires for the firm's wire rope factory, wire for use in the spring and packaging sectors were also drawn. Additionally, the company's in-house wire production also enabled the production of heavy hoist cables, e.g. for the mining industry. After the destruction suffered during the Second World War, the Wolf brothers rebuilt their works together with their employees and initially concentrated on the mining industry. This sector was experiencing a boom at that time because the German economy urgently needed heat and energy for the construction industry.

Company history 125 years of Gustav Wolf 21 Four generations This photograph was taken 25 years ago on the occasion of the company's 100 year jubilee and shows four generations of the Wolf family and leading employees who helped build the company up. From the left: Authorized Officer Heinz Meierfrankenfeld, Dr. Eng. Ernst Wolf, Hans Wolf (great uncle of Dr. Ernst Wolf), Authorized Officer Fritz Singenstroth, Dr. Gustav Horst Wolf (father) and Authorized Officer Anton Vogt. The painting on the wall is of company founder Karl Gustav Wolf. During the war years, Gustav Wolf addressed a new field of business in the area of steel wire production: bead insert wire. This special product subsequently became successful because car tyres worldwide require bead wire so they can fit on the wheel rim. After having taken a decisive step in the direction of 'the reinforcement of rubber and plastics' with bead wire, Gustav Wolf developed further products for replacing textiles or similar reinforcing materials with steel wire, steel cord and steel ropes. In one sense, Gustav Wolf 's old slogan»from the region into the world«has long since needed to be reinterpreted. Today,»region«means»regions«, because Gustav Wolf ropes and wires are produced at many production locations in the world, from where they supply the corresponding local and also international markets. But it is also true that never before has so much been produced in the Gütersloh headquarters as it is today clear evidence of the continuous growth of the company at both the international and local level. Gustav Wolf consistently invests in quality, service and new products. Furthermore, the company has brilliantly trained employees, a strong sales presence on all continents of the world and an affordable form of production that safeguards employment. The management thinks and acts internationally, and satisfying the Gustav Wolf quality standards worldwide is always our top priority. In this way, the future of Gustav Wolf is in good hands. 24 Jahre Gustav Wolf Environmentally-friendly diffusion brass-plating The photograph shows the moment when the wire is washed with desalted water after its copper-plating in order to remove any electrolyte residuals from the wire. The wire is then zinccoated and washed again; in the last step the diffusion of copper and zinc to brass, at over 500 degrees Celsius, takes place.

years of Gustav Wolf Production Locations OUR WORKS IN FRANCE: STAL, REICHSHOFFEN STAL, REICHSHOFFEN: FIT FOR THE FUTURE WITH TECHNICAL KNOW-HOW With a site extending over 40,000 square meters, the traditional company Stal (Société de Tréfilerie d Alsace) in Reichshoffen in the French Alsace was acquired by Gustav Wolf in 1995 and has since contri buted to the success of the whole group. The site's production focuses on the classic steel wire programme from mm, with bare, zinccoated and copper-plated surfaces for the automotive, furniture and construction industry. The firm's products are also used in tyres, elevator ropes, sieves, hoses, spring cores for mattresses, wire bending parts for car seats, Louis Guthmuller, Directeur Général of Stal springs, etc. Stal is also an important supplier of wire to other Gustav Wolf works, such as the wire rope in Nebra. In recent years, Stal has invested in expanding its capacity several times in response to increasing sales. With their Alsatian mentality, the approximately 100 employees often make the impossible possible for their customers. Their principle is: There is always a solution an attitude that is very much appreciated by their customers. Perhaps it is the familylike, friendly working atmosphere at Stal that has made the Gustav Wolf works in Reichshoffen such a success. General Manager Louis Guthmuller says:»with our technical standards, we are perfectly prepared for the future.«

Production Locations 125 years of Gustav Wolf 25 BRUNTON WOLF WIRE ROPES, DUBAI: SERVICE IS THE KEYWORD Brunton Wolf Wire Ropes in Dubai was founded in 2004 as the second Joint Venture with Indian steel wire producers Ursha Martin. The company, which is located in the free trade zone of Dubai called Jebel Ali and is situated directly by the harbour, is home to 70 employees who come from both India and Pakistan. They produce the full range of rope products with diameters between 3 and 76 mm for elevator ropes, crane ropes for harbour and building construction, drilling and anchoring ropes for the oil industry and also more and more products that are used in the mining industry. Up to 1,000 tonnes of steel wire are produced per month. 50 per cent of the products produced by Brunton Wolf with the Gustav Wolf quality standard are shipped to the Arab countries: the rest is shipped to 21 different countries all over the world. The production site in Dubai is of strategic relevance for Gustav Wolf. Sales here have experienced continual increases, and recently, business relations in many countries on the African continent and in four North Asian countries have been developed. The production systems are modernised continuously, which also applies to the service model, which is based on the Herzebrock model, which means store, section, and supply in assembled form. 28 years of Gustav Wolf Production Locations OUR WORKS IN SUZHOU Director of Gustav Wolf Suzhou, Hans M. Huber Gustav Wolf Wire Rope in Suzhou, China, was founded in 2007 and, with 80 employees and 6,000 square meters of production space, it produces elevator ropes for both the local Chinese and international markets. The product range mainly incorporates elevator ropes for low, medium and high towers as wells as for high-speed elevators. The sustained construction boom in China, especially along the east coast, has ensured profitable business for Gustav Wolf Suzhou. QUALITY AND SERVICE GUARANTORS OF OUR SUCCESS IN CHINA The eight and nine-strand elevator ropes with their fibre, mixed and full steel cores from the in-house production can be used for every purpose, and large elevator manufacturers with production sites in China are key buyers of these quality products. Gustav Wolf Suzhou is an authorised supplier of Kone, Otis, ThyssenKrupp, Schindler, Canny and many others. More than 40 further elevator and service companies are supplied either directly or through more than 15 distribution partners in the Asia-Pacific area and also in the Middle East. To guarantee that the quality is as high as it is in Germany, there is also a quality management system at the Suzhou works, with colleagues from Gütersloh checking and approving product samples. Director Hans M. Huber:»We are a reliable business partner for the elevator industry and stand for high quality products and services. That is the guarantee for our success.«

Production Locations 125 years of Gustav Wolf 27 Gerhard Lederer, Works Manager Gusta Wolf Miskolc NEW HUNGARIAN PRODUCTION SITE STRENGTHENS BUSINESS IN EASTERN EUROPE For the first time the Gustav Wolf flag is now flying in Eastern Europe - with the opening of the production site Miskolc in Hungary, approximately 200 km east of Budapest. From here, Gustav Wolf will be encouraging its expansion into the Eastern European markets. Gustav Wolf is using the competitive local cost structures on the 20,000 square meter site in Miskolc for the production of high tensile brass-plated hose wires for use in steel cords and reinforcing hydraulic hoses for the Hungarian, Austrian and Italian markets. Another mainstay in the 2,400 square meter production hall will be thin elevator ropes that are a very successful business line for Gustav Wolf. In Miskolc, Gustav Wolf will initially employ 30 employees, who have been trained in using the Gustav Wolf technology in Gütersloh and Nebra in the summer of The number of employees is eventually set to increase to 50. The new Gustav Wolf production site in Europe has growth potential and plans to buy further plot areas to expand its production capacity. With Gerhard Lederer, a Mechanical Engineer from Rastatt and Works Manager in Miskolc, Gustav Wolf has an expert in the local market on side who has been living in Hungary for 18 years. OUR WORKS IN UNGARN

years of Gustav Wolf Production Locations OUR WORKS IN NEBRA Responsible for production in Nebra and Roßleben: Works Manager Stefan Grey PRODUCTION IS MODERNISED STEP-BY-STEP IN NEBRA A postcard sent from the former East Germany in the year 1990 was the ice breaker between Gustav Wolf and the former state-owned wire rope factory in Nebra. Just one year later, on 1 September 1991, the factory, with its then 55 employees (today, they number about 100), became part of the Gustav Wolf group. Ever since, the company in Nebra has been growing year-on-year and its production volume has increased fourfold to now total approximately 5,000 tonnes per year. Customers are supplied all over the world, with products for Kone, Thyssen- Krupp and Otis being made at the wire rope works, which has its own drawing plant (all wires for processing are directly drawn in Nebra). The site has already been extended four times to expand the machine park for the production of elevator and crane ropes. The biggest hall, home to the wire rope works and the drawing plant, now has a length of 130 metres and has already been extended twice between 1996 and In 2010 it proved necessary to outsource some assembly work to Roßleben near Nebra. Works manager Stefan Grey is focusing his future efforts on the modernisation of the production plant in close cooperation with Gustav Wolf in Gütersloh.

Production Locations 125 years of Gustav Wolf 29 IN ROSSLEBEN, GUSTAV WOLF HAS RETURNED TO HIS ROOTS When the rope and wire production site in Nebra reached its capacity in 2010 and an extension was no longer possible, Gustav Wolf opened a service and logistics centre in the adjacent town of Roßleben (Thuringia). On a site with over 1,400 square meters of space, the ropes produced here in Nebra, that are up to 5,000 m in length, are cut to the lengths specified by their customers, given endconnections and accessories necessary for their use such as screws, pins, special cleaners, rubber gaskets, work gloves, lubricating oil and pellets for the adjustment of the buffer stand, and finally packaged and sent all over the world. In this way, the employees at Roßleben support their colleagues in the nearby Herzebrock plant. The incoming orders at the sales office in Gütersloh are distributed to the corresponding production sites, where they are then processed. To prevent errors, the order data are sent electronically to the coiling tools and then implemented. Gustav Wolf returned to its roots with the production site in Roßleben: it was in 1734 that the ancestors of the Wolf family opened a wire rope works in what is now Thuringia, laying the foundations for the success story of the Gustav Wolf group. OUR WORKS IN ROSSLEBEN

years of Gustav Wolf Production Locations OUR WORKS IN HERZEBROCK FROM THE LOGISTICS CENTRE IN HERZEBROCK TO CUSTOMERS ALL OVER THE WORLD Since April 2004, the logistics centre for the Gustav Wolf group has been situated in Herzebrock near Gütersloh in a 3,100 square meters production hall and a 1,500 square meters warehouse. Sixteen employees in the works and five administration employees ensure the trouble-free assembly and shipping of the Gustav Wolf products all over the world on average 1.7 million meters of rope. Deliveries are carried out by truck, ship and air freight. In Herzebrock, the ropes produced at the German and international production sites of the Gustav Wolf group are cut to the lengths specified by the Katja Hoeschler, Manager of the Herzebrock-Clarholz logistics centre customer, equipped with the required end-connections and delivered in time sometimes there are only a few hours between the incoming order and the delivery of the goods. The employees in both Herzebrock and the second logistics centre in Roßleben have to work on a very flexible basis. If required by the customer, the rope is shipped assemblyready with wire rope thimble swaging or eye bolts, so that the customer can then process the rope further. When necessary, rope suspensions with spring and buffering are also shipped directly with the elevator ropes. Customer service is top priority. Katja Hoeschler, Manager of the logistics centre:»we are optimising our workflow procedures so we can respond even more flexibly to our customers' shipping requirements - with the deadlines they set becoming increasingly shorter.«

Production Locations 125 years of Gustav Wolf 31 TWO PROFIT CENTRES WORK AT THE HEADQUARTERS IN GÜTERSLOH Gustav Wolf has been producing wires and ropes at its location in Gütersloh since The production initially took place between Langer Weg and Carl- Bertelsmann Street. Later, the wire works in Friedrichsdorfer Street was added. In the 1950's, the construction of a production hall for bead wires began. Today, Gustav Wolf has two divisions that work as in-house profit centres. In the Carl-Bertelsmann Street is the wire rope works with its own wire production. The focus here is on the production of crane, elevator and automotive ropes. All work surrounding wires takes place in the Sundern Street. This is where bead wires and brass-plated hose wires are produced. Gütersloh is the location of the firm's headquarters, with over 200 employees, of whom 175 work in production and 55 in administration. From here, all Gustav Wolf production sites and agencies worldwide are managed, with clear business guidelines being developed and key investment, sales and market decisions being coordinated here. The Gustav Wolf quality standards that are determined here are obligatory for every production site. The area of research and development is also located here. In the test labs for chemistry and physics, incoming deliveries of raw materials are sampled, and test reports for the shipping of wire and rope products are compiled. 34 years of Gustav Wolf Production Locations OUR WORKS IN INDIEN The Indian production site in Ranchi. Small photograph: Abhijit Sengupta, Works Manager, Gustav Wolf Speciality Cords Ltd. THE GUSTAV WOLF BRAND IS ALSO REPRESENTED IN INDIA BY USHA MARTIN By 1992, Gustav Wolf was already selling hoist cables for the hard coal mining industry and excavator ropes for use in opencast mining in India. From this business, a partnership developed with the Sanjay Pasari family that finally led to the Joint Venture between Gustav Wolf & Wire in Calcutta in 1998, and to the shared stake in the bead wire company Rajrathan in India, which Gustav Wolf uses for the production of bead wire in India. In 2002 this stake was sold. In 2003 Gustav Wolf started a new Joint Venture, this time with the company Usha Martin. Gustav Wolf Speciality Cords Ltd., which produces conveyor belt ropes and automotive cord, supplies firms such as Continental and Dunlop India on the home market but also exports to Europe and South Africa. With approximately 70 employees, the works currently have capacity for up to 5,400 tonnes of steel cord. Usha Martin was founded in 1961 in Ranchi where its main production works are still located to this day, and employs 3,500 employees in India alone, with another 700 worldwide in England, Thailand and Dubai as well as in further distribution works and marketing offices all over the world.

Product engineering 125 years of Gustav Wolf 33 TECHNICAL MANAGER RALF KRONE (WIRES) AND DR. ANDREAS FRANZ (ROPES) SMART PEOPLE FOR THE BEST PRODUCTS Their tasks could hardly be any more extensive: Dr. Andreas Franz and Ralf Krone are responsible for the further development of products and processes and for ensuring the Gustav Wolf quality standards are maintained at all of the group's production sites. They therefore stand for the Gustav Wolf brand. Ralf Krone is a Chemical Engineer. He completed his Master's thesis in Electrolytic deposition of structured brass layers at Gustav Wolf in 1988 before going on to join them as an employee. He is now the Technical Manager of the wire division. Dr. Andreas Franz studied Mechanical Engineering in Dresden and completed his doctorate in the area of construction technology. He worked at Krupp in Neubeckum before becoming a Technical Manager at Gustav Wolf in Their specialist fields may be different, but their tasks as managers are similar. Broad range of tasks Ralf Krone, Manager Wires Technology They are responsible for the provision of technical support to all of works worldwide, they compile feasibility studies and product specifications, they keep in regular contact with the works managers, carry out audits on site and support customers at home and abroad with technical questions and complaints. They also maintain contact with suppliers and are represented in industry organisations such as the German Wire Rope Manufacturers Association (Dr. Franz) and the German Iron and Steel Wire Manufacturers Association (Mr. Krone). Products and Process Technologies Their main task is the development and implementation of new process technologies and the subsequent quality control. Recent examples include the development of the hybrid elevator rope HyTrac (Dr. Franz) and the design and installation of a Dr. Andreas Franz, Manager Steel Wire Ropes Technology waste water system for the production site in Nebra (Mr. Krone). Both Managers travel a lot (sometimes together) and collaborate closely both with each other and with the test lab (Gunnar Scheibe, chemistry and Karl Wilhelm Dieckmann, physics) and their corresponding teams. It is a well known fact: a product or a work flow can only be as good as the collaboration of all of the people in a company. Gustav Wolf strictly follows this principle not only in its headquarters but at all the Gustav Wolf production sites, worldwide.

years of Gustav Wolf Products GUSTAV WOLF IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS OUR WIRE AND OUR ROPE Wires and ropes from Gustav Wolf contain the knowledge and experience amassed during 125 years of industrial production. The most acclaimed and biggest tyre and elevator manufacturers and leading companies in the rubber, plastics, mattress and automotive industries rely on the quality of our products. This is why Gustav Wolf wires and ropes are used wherever safety is needed. All raw materials, intermediate products and manufactured goods are analysed and sampled by our testing and development organisation. All Gustav Wolf products that are for shipment come with an attestation; they offer maximum safety, high flexibility and durability. Wire for every purpose Wire has to satisfy a range of different requirements. It needs special characteristics regardless of whether it is rope wire, whether it is to be used in an office copier machine or it is heading for heavy goods elevators. As bead wire, it must ensure the perfect fit of the tyre on the wheel rim, whether used in bikes, in cars or for specialist tyres of all kinds and sizes. For spring elements such as those used in the famous box spring bed the steel wire has to be as elastic as possible. Gustav Wolf wires also hold flexible hoses together, giving them the right support and dynamic stability. The wire spiral is usually coated with plastic, zinc or bronze. Many manufacturers also use Gustav Wolf wires for producing high-quality roller-, plate-, strip- or tool-brushes. The firm also makes wires for metal cloths, sieve fabric, wire strapping and much more. All Gustav Wolf wires can be delivered with a range of surfaces bare, phosphatecoated, zinc-coated, copper-coated, bronze-coated and brass-coated and with the highest tensile strength. Ropes are becoming thinner and more flexible High breaking loads, low elongation and long durability characterise the high-performance ropes from Gustav Wolf. They are also produced for numerous purposes. Special ropes with integrated steel rope cores have been approved for decades. A Gustav Wolf speciality is its vertical range of manufacture that is possible due to its in-house wire production. This means the technical development of Gustav Wolf ropes has experienced a strong impetus. This is especially true for elevator ropes which have been a mainstay in the firm since the 1990s. It was then that the elevator industry began searching for space and energy saving solutions for more compact elevator systems. Ever since then, ropes have been getting thinner and more flexible. Gustav Wolf has played a leading role in this field and has decisively influenced its research and development. In coope-

Products 125 years of Gustav Wolf 35 ration with elevator manufacturers such as Kone, Gustav Wolf has encouraged the development of thinner and thinner ropes up to diameters of only 4 mm. A new way of increasing performances with a simultaneous reduction in weight is the development of hybrid ropes for elevators, in which Gustav Wolf has a patent. There are different test facilities in the headquarters in Gütersloh for developments in the area of research and development. These include fatigue bending machines with up to four test pulleys with which durability studies for different rope designs are carried out. The aim is always to find ffordable alternatives to existing installations in the interest of our customers, by reducing rope diameters, by increasing wire stability and by compressing strands, for instance. This theme is high on the agenda of Gustav Wolf. can be integrated into the lift shaft. Gustav Wolf has developed ropes for this purpose, and publishes its research and development results in the trade press and at conventions. The latest project at Gustav Wolf is the HyTrac rope, a combination of steel rope and high tensile synthetic fibre rope as its core. In contrast to rope with a steel core, this rope with a synthetic fibre core is much lighter and has a higher breaking load. This means it can deal with greater heights and also has superior durability, because the earing friction between the wires of the outer strand and the wires of the steel core that occurs on ropes with a steel core is omitted. With this new rope, Gustav Wolf is technically way out in front of the market. There are two general trends in the elevator industry: on the one hand, the rise heights of modern elevator towers are increasing. This is why the ropes have to become longer. That means more weight which represents a challenge to elevator manufacturers. On the other hand, elevators have also become more compact in recent years, as more and more houses with elevator systems have been built and with lower rise heights especially in Germany, Italy and Spain. To save energy and money, the sizes of the individual components have to be reduced so that the main engine with the traction sheave in which the rope is located

References 125 years of Gustav Wolf 37 GUSTAV WOLF ELEVATOR ROPES ARE USED IN THE MOST FAMOUS BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is certainly one of the most spectacular buildings in the world and also the most expensive: instead of the planned 1.6 billion Euros, it has swallowed up 6.4 billion Euros in construction costs. The elevators, of which there are over 200, were delivered and planned by Finnish elevator manufacturer Kone, and cost 40 million Euros alone and they all operate with Gustav Wolf ropes. The hotel has the largest observation deck in the world at a height of 191 m (340 m in length, of which 146 m is a swimming pool). 10,000 people work in this hotel facility, which includes an exhibition centre, a shopping mall, an art and sciences centre, and more. The 171 elevators in the building that occupies the largest area in the world, Terminal 3 of Peking Airport, are also operate with 13 mm elevator ropes from Gustav Wolf. Our ropes also move the elevators in the highest tower in Europe, with 95 floors, The Shard in London, which opened just in time for the 2012 Olympics. Additional examples of the use of our elevator ropes in the most famous constructions in the world are the ships in the AIDA fleet, the Trump Tower and Empire State Building skyscrapers in New York, the Turning Torso in Malmö and the Hyatt Center in Chicago.

years of Gustav Wolf References SPRING CORES FOR THE MATTRESS INDUSTRY A small yet increasingly vital part of the Gustav Wolf range of products is the production of spring cores for the upholstery and mattress industries. While spring cores are drawn at the Gütersloh location, Reichshoffen concentrates on the production of Bonell and pocket spring cores. These provide the basis for high-quality mattresses and couches with integrated steel springs, and are then covered with surface upholstery made from wool, cotton, silk, latex or foam material. Spring core mattresses come in many different varieties: pocket spring core, Tonnen pocket spring core or Bonell pocket spring core mattresses are just a few examples. A standard spring core is made from seven rows each with 24 springs, meaning 168 Bonell springs in total. The dimensions of these spring cores are variable with widths from 60 cm to 180 cm. In theory they can be produced in any length, but are normally between 180cm and 220 cm with and without a steel frame. The spring cores that are produced are packaged on a semi-automatic basis for shipping. Ten are pressed together to form a coil before being loaded onto the truck to be transported to customers all over Europe.
