Approval of Minutes Moved by Greg Hanon that the Board approve the minutes of the Regular December 15 Board meeting as presented: Seconded by Jeff DeMarre. Motion unanimously carried. Consent Items Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the consent items on the regular and supplemental agendas: Seconded by Rick Hendricks. Motion unanimously carried. Offer of Employment Wendy Sandberg, Child Nutrition Assistant, Mountain View Middle, ongoing position, effective January 3, 2011 Retirement JoAnn Stansell, Counselor, Sumner Middle, effective end of the school year. JoAnn has 41 years of experience; 37 years with the Sumner School District. Resignation Laurel Kingsbury, Assistant Girls Soccer Coach (C-Team), Sumner Middle Alexandra Douglas, Learning Specialist, Sumner Middle, effective February 17, 2011 Houston Thoren, Custodian, Bonney Lake High, effective January 29, 2011 Surplus Property The Board authorized the District to surplus items on the District Surplus Removal Listing.

2 Consent Items, continued Board Minutes Page 2 of 5 Out of State Travel Cheryl Gosselin, Librarian, Sumner High, to attend International Baccalaureate (IB) Training for Librarians, March 2-5, 2011, at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Funding source: Sumner High IB budget Monica Swigart, French/English/IB Teacher, Sumner High, to attend International Baccalaureate (IB) Training, June 27 July 1, 2011, at United World College in Montezuma, New Mexico. Funding source: Sumner High IB budget Don Pruett, Teacher, Sumner High, to present for NEED (National Energy Education Development) at the Science Teacher s Association Convention, March 10-12, 2011, in San Francisco, California. Funding source: all expenses, including substitute reimbursement, will be paid for by the NEED project. Recognition a. Roll of Honor Board President Sherm Voiles recognized students, staff and families throughout the Sumner School District who contributed to local food banks, senior centers and the Sumner Family Center to help assist neighbors in need during the holiday season. A summary is attached. b. School Insight: McAlder Elementary School Principal Susie Black gave an overview of the collaborative work at McAlder Elementary. She introduced Don Wasielewski, a teacher for 38 years with the District, and Sarah O Brien, a teacher for 4 years. Both spoke about the positive effects of collaborative work at their school. Susie introduced 2 nd Grade students Mayzie Lewis and Carter Lysne, who talked about the strategies they have learned to solve math problems. c. School Board Recognition January is School Board Recognition Month in the state of Washington. This coincides with a nationwide effort to honor and underscore the important role of elected school board members in public education and student achievement. Superintendent Mendoza presented Board members with certificates of appreciation. Board members were also honored with books that will be presented to the Donald Eismann Elementary School library in observance of School Board Recognition Month. Meeting Recessed: 6:29 p.m. Meeting Reconvened: 6:40 p.m. Reports a. Student Achievement Report: Response to Intervention (RTI) Sumner Middle Principal Steve Sjolund and Assistant Principal Jenny Williams spoke about the RTI model that was put in to place this fall in their school. Steve spoke about the positive changes going to a trimester school year. Jenny spoke about how data analysis of student performance is an integral part of the intervention process to inform teachers and to help students. b. Resource Conservation Manager Program Shared Resource Conservation Manager Jay Donnaway gave an update on energy and resource conservation efforts in the District. Jay is a shared RCM for the cities of Sumner, Bonney Lake, and Buckley and Sumner School District. This position is funded by the Washington State Department of Commerce utilizing Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant funds.

Sumner Education Association (SEA) Report Hillery Berteaux, SEA President, and Michelle Diemer-Labor, SEA Bargaining Chair, shared the SEA Vision and Values Statement developed to guide SEA work in the upcoming years. Audience Comments District teachers Emily Browning-Cray, Melissa Deckman and Karla Banks thanked the School Board and the District for their ongoing support of the visual arts and their commitment to educating the whole child. They invited the Board to attend the 3 rd Annual Art Show Saturday, February 5, at Mountain View Middle School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and encouraged the Board and Superintendent to attend a school Art Club meeting. Superintendent Comments Dr. Mendoza recognized Deb Barlow for nurturing the current collaborative relationship between the SEA and the District. Board Member Comments None Unfinished Business a. New Policy: Operations and Maintenance of School Property Second Reading Moved by Greg Hanon to approve new Policy 9000: Operations and Maintenance of School Property: Seconded by Jeff DeMarre. Motion unanimously carried. New Business a. Textbook Adoption: First Reading Teaching and Learning Executive Director Erin LaVerdiere presented the following instructional materials for use in the District. These textbooks have been reviewed and approved by the District Curriculum and Instructional Materials Committee. School Improvement Plans Research & Assessment Director Susie Lynch highlighted activities from Sumner Middle School s Improvement Plan, which included an overview of the goals they will focus on to make sustained changes in student performance. Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board accept the School Improvement Plans: Seconded by Jeff DeMarre. Motion unanimously carried. Annual District school improvement plans are available on the District Web site.

Community Recreation Agreement Moved by Jeff DeMarre that the Board approve the renewal of the Community Recreation Program Interlocal 2-year Agreement between the City of Bonney Lake, the City of Sumner and the Sumner School District for 2011: Seconded by Mike Pavlik. Motion unanimously carried. d. Change Order #2: Bonney Lake Elementary Moved by Greg Hanon that the Board approve Change Order #2: Bonney Lake Elementary: Seconded by Mike Pavlik. Motion unanimously carried. e. Change Order #4: Bonney Lake High Addition Moved by Jeff DeMarre that the Board approve Change Order #4: Bonney Lake High Addition: Seconded by Rick Hendricks. Motion passed 4-1. f. Warrant Approval Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the warrants as certified by the auditing officer: Seconded by Greg Hanon. Motion unanimously carried. Upcoming Board Meeting A Study Session to discuss the District s Technology Plan is scheduled for Wednesday, January 26, at 6:00 p.m. in Board room. The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 16, at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the Board room. b Legislative Conference The 2010 WASA/WSSDA Legislative Conference is scheduled Sunday, February 27, and Monday, February 28, at the Red Lion Hotel and the Capitol in Olympia. 5 c. Budget Status Report The budget status report for December was included for Board information.
