4 Sample Question/Answer Page Award: Exceptional Family Child Care Provider Please note: This is just an example of how the questions can be answered and the type of answers the Awards Committee is looking for. Question #1: Demonstrates outstanding ability in their child care work environment through initiation, dedication and strong communication skills. Makes a home visit upon entrance/acceptance into childcare home, giving parents, child and provider a more personal individualized interview. Sends home Journals daily to show parents what activities and experiences each child has had during the day and encourages parent feedback...confidentiality Maintains contact with outside sources- school, access centres, family center, for children and parents with additional support needs to enter childcare home. Provider welcomes all children and parents, helping them access community resources, programs discussion groups... provider lead discussion groups for her own parents so that they can gain valuable information from each other. Sharing toys, clothing etc, from each other! This can also build strong parent relationships within the family home and create a family atmosphere for everyone! Question #2: Demonstrates professionalism and plays an integral role in encouraging parental participation in their program. Provider has her ECE III classification, specializing in special needs and continues to take courses and workshops to improve her knowledge of current trends in the child care field. She encourages parents to attend community programs together and to share info with each other. She has a reading program to encourage children s extended family to participate with the family home. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents/guardians, and even community celebrities come and read to the children on a weekly basis. Parents are encouraged to participate with the home anyway they can... fieldtrip planning and implementing, crafts, birthdays. Question #3: Demonstrates an ability to actively participate in new programming ideas. Provider uses the Hawaiian Early Learning Profile [HELP] that evaluates all child s skills- social, cognitive, language, fine motor, large motor and self help. From this, she implements an individual developmentally appropriate program for each child. She also sets up the environment so that toys meet the current developmental levels of all children, and they can independently choose their own fun while still maintaining a learning environment for every child. She individually works with each child daily to expand the skills the children are working on based on the HELP observations. Parents are given help sheet to coincide with the developmental levels of their child, which helps parent to purchase appropriate toys and games to help child to excel in their learning at home. The learning profile goes home daily in their journals and is a keepsake of the child s daily developmental growth for 5 years of their life.[ a parent favorite] The provider incorporates where she can, all current program trends that will benefit her families and their children. She maintains an inclusive program, providing a learning environment based on each child s needs, regardless of age, or developmental level. If necessary provider will utilize outside community resources necessary for the success of each child s development. Question #4: Demonstrates an exceptional ability to positively and effectively integrate family child care with personal life. Provider sets up her home so that children, parents and provider s family all have their needs met. Children utilize the lower level of the home, with the exception of nap time, which takes place in bedrooms not used by family members during daycare hours. Family members are encouraged to participate in all activities, so they feel part of the child care home. The provider s family enjoys helping to paint and redecorate the child care area, and revamp toys weekly.
5 Question #5: Demonstrates an ability to provide an inclusive program (multi-age/additional support needs/diverse/cultural). Example Answer: The provider uses the HELP program to individualize her program for every child regardless of age or developmental level. Her program provides her to be flexible to add any extra activities to provide for cultural diversity, behaviour needs, and age levels of the children. Provide a copy of your daily program to support an exceptional inclusive program!!
