Covered versus non-covered unemployment: Who s in, who s out, and why? Step-by-step instructions for using the Employer Online Self-Service System and why you need to know how it functions. They ve been bad; you must be good: important follow-up you must do once you ve dismissed a problem worker. The costly mistakes managers make when they file an unemployment appeal or raise an issue and how to avoid them. When and how to file a UI appeal. Bruce Paulson, Premium Auditor for Information Providers, Inc. will present information on worker s compensation insurance including who s covered, who s required to be covered, job descriptions and rate calculations as well as what you need for the audit. 6:00 7:00 pm: Is your firm a Firm of the Future? What does that really mean? Natasha Gorman, Business Development Manager in the Accountant and Advisor Group at Intuit will explore accounting trends and the technology that facilitates growth and profitability for your firm. This presentation includes an overview of the new QuickBooks Online Accountant dashboard. This course will be offered in the Atrium during our social event. 3 General Information 3 The Minnesota Chapter of National Association of Tax Professionals is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE Credit. CANCELLATION POLICY All conference cancellations must be confirmed in writing. Cancellations will be accepted through September 5, 2015 minus a $50 administrative fee. No refunds will be allowed after September 5, Smoking Policy Smoking is not permitted in the conference sessions. Conference Materials Conference materials will be available Monday from 4:30 6:30 in the Atrium or at registration Tuesday morning. Vendors Multiple vendors will be available in the social/vendor room. Reminder Casual and layered clothing is recommended due to tolerance levels of registrants to room temperatures. Charity This year s charity is the Ronald McDonald House. We will be holding a silent auction please let us know if you have something you would like to contribute. Note Please remember to silence your cell phones. As part of our charity fundraiser, any individual whose cell phone rings during one of our sessions will be fined $5.00. All proceeds will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House. 6 6 Speakers C. Dale Boushley, CFP, EA: Dale has been in the income tax and financial planning business since He and his wife Sharon own Financial Resource Management, Inc. (FRM) which provides income tax preparation and planning services to over 500 clients. He graduated from the College of Financial Planning in 1988 and earned the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation at that time. Dale is an Enrolled Agent (EA) with the Internal Revenue Service. Dale provides financial planning and asset management services through Securities America Advisors, Inc., and is licensed as a registered investment advisor representative in AZ. He is a registered representative of and offers securities through Securities America Inc. member FINRA / SIPC, holding series 7, 24 and 63 licenses. Karen Brehmer is a Stakeholder Liaison with the Small Business and Self Employed Division of the Internal Revenue Service. Stakeholder Liaisons provide training and outreach to tax practitioners and organizations that assist small business owners. Karen has been with the IRS for twenty seven years. She has held several positions. She answered tax law questions, and worked as a revenue officer helping small business owners who were not in compliance with payroll taxes. She joined Stakeholder Liaison in She regularly speaks at organization meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops on tax-related topics that are relevant to tax professionals or small business owners. Karen holds a bachelor s degree from the University of Minnesota, majoring in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English and Speech/Communications. Jake Feneis Jake s primary responsibility is serving as the Minnesota Department of Revenue s individual income tax liaison to the Minnesota community of accountants, attorneys, state and local agencies, and other organizations. He provides education on Minnesota tax law changes and other relevant information pertaining to the revenue system in Minnesota. He has a degree in business administration with a minor in finance. Gary Johnson, Employer / Agent Liaison: Gary has over 25 years of experience in the complex discipline of Unemployment Insurance; seven years of which he worked as a Tax Auditor and the past eighteen-plus years in the areas of communication, education and electronic commerce as a Project Coordinator and Employer/Agent Liaison with the Unemployment Insurance Division of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Gary also coordinates the Minnesota Business Tax Education Partnership. Wayne Johnson, Benefit Program Specialist: Wayne has a degree in Secondary Education, but discovered very early on that he likes teenagers in smaller doses. He has been with the UI Program since 1980 and now works mostly as a quality auditor and technical writer. Each year he reviews 400 adjudicator decisions and 80 appeal hearings and decisions issued by unemployment law judges, to ensure that Minnesota is meeting federal standards for sufficiency of fact finding and proper application of the Minnesota UI Law. Bruce Paulson, APA, CIPA, CPCU: Bruce has his BS in Business from the University of Minnesota. He has worked in the premium audit insurance industry and related work for 36 years. He began as an independent field auditor, moved to audit manager and eventually took positions with St. Paul Companies and Travelers Insurance. During these transitions he worked with underwriters, claims and loss control staff. He was involved with the National Association of Insurance Auditors on several committees, eventually serving as the association President. Currently Bruce works for an independent premium audit company, Information Providers Inc. in Hopkins, MN. Natasha Gorman, QuickBooks Online Business Development Manager: For the past seven years, Natasha has been working at Intuit, engaging directly with accountants and small business to provide them with the necessary education and support they need to migrate to cloud. Natasha is passionate about introducing cloud-based technology to the accounting profession and truly understands what it takes to scale a small business in today s complex and ever-changing environment.

Tax aspects should be considered by the parties before the property settlement is signed. We will discuss alimony, dependents, basis and potential taxable gains; QDROs, dividing IRAs and what if the taxpayer is already taking substantially equal payments under Code Section 72(t) and the account is being divided?
