2 KBA LOGOTRONIC Sheetfed offset Concept T he goal for practically every print enterprise is to possess an unbroken workflow from order receipt to product dispatch. In most cases, many different machines and programs are involved, as determined by the needs and business of the specific company. Capabilities for integration into an overall workflow are also becoming an important factor. Such workflows cannot simply be bought, they must be tailor-made. This is also generally not a domain for one-stop suppliers. KBA makes a dedicated contribution to networking and workflow with its management systems Logotronic professional and Logotronic basic. The universal JDF interface developed by the CIP4 consortium (of which KBA is a member) permits data exchange with both management information and prepress systems. The JDF specification (Job Definition Format) takes into account all process-relevant departments and entities, such as: coordination prepress print finishing and conversion customers management external providers dispatch For the time being, however, data transfer can continue to use the previously installed interfaces. 5 T he system version Logotronic basic was designed as an inexpensive tool to transfer presetting data to the printing press in the simplest possible manner. This basic package is ideally suited for smaller enterprises with only a few, or even just one press, for whom the investment in a more comprehensive solution may seem too cost-intensive. Logotronic basic comprises the optional modules KBA CIPLink (CIP3/JDF data transfer for press presetting), job logging and if necessary an online link for a plate scanner. Printing can be started more quickly and with less makeready wastage, and valuable production time can be saved. Press presetting is based on the transfer of ink profile data and settings for the ink duct roller and dampening unit. The existing company server takes care of networking, though there is also an offline version to enable presetting of the press where no suitable network is available. When the job is finished, the job log data, such as counters (start and end times), overall time, standstill time and printing time, are saved and made available as a text file (data record) for statistical accounting or materials planning. All data are generated automatically and thus cannot be manipulated. It is no longer necessary for the press operator to fill out daily time reports or to record specific job data for other systems. The operational and press data can be retrieved for use in existing analysis software, e.g. via the import functions in spreadsheet or database applications. In addition, an Access database Job log management has been developed, Job logs, annual summaries, and monthly or weekly overviews permitting fast evaluation of the job data. This database can also be adapted with a minimum of outlay to address individual company requirements. With this mini Logotronic solution, it is possible to supply presetting data not only to the current range of KBA presses, but also to older models. 4 5

Featuring a JDF interface, the system is built around the Logotronic server. From initial preparation to final quality control, Logotronic professional offers wide-ranging solutions for data handling and communication beyond the actual pressroom The Logotronic server, a powerful PC with database, basic software and an integrated web server, is responsible for data exchange between the individual system components within the print company, for the processing and storage of data and for maintaining communication across the network. The objective of this networking is to optimise process organisation within and between the various departments of a print enterprise. After all, by digitising the process and communication chains, it uncovers enormous potential to eliminate time-consuming repetition (e.g. multiple data inputs), to cut costs and to enhance productivity. The scope of the data for press presetting via Logotronic professional is naturally much wider than in the basic version. In the case of repeat jobs, for example, it is here possible to recall also blower air parameters, powder spray data, the required printing pressure, and a whole host of other settings, which contributes significantly to further reductions in makeready time and start-up wastage. With the functions job log and production log, and with daily, monthly or annual summaries, the user is able to generate a variety of reports, which can also be adapted to specific business requirements by way of flexible filter options and selection criteria.

7 Logotronic professional Printshop networking Bäuerle Folder Logotronic professional provides a link to commercial IT and management information systems (MIS), as well as to the whole range of printing presses and peripheral equipment at production level. Both KBA sheetfed and web presses can be networked within a single Logotronic setup. And it goes without saying that all the other OPERA components, such as the colour measuring and quality control system Densitronic S, the CIP3/ JDF interface CIPLink, the plate scanner Scantronic or the service module Servicetronic, can also be integrated into the network. In this way the Logotronic network can be configured exactly to meet the individual user s needs, with the flexibility to grow step by step as the business expands its implementations of fully digital data flows. 9 KBA LOGOTRONIC Sheetfed offset Production data Electronic planning chart To assist job scheduling, an electronic planning chart has been integrated into Logotronic professional. All jobs prepared as orders in the branch software are taken over into the chart. The chart elements themselves are manipulated on a drag & drop basis. The system calculates the changes resulting from such rescheduling and shifts the individual jobs accordingly. Conflicts and status changes are signalled by colour coding. Capacity overviews indicate reserves and potential bottlenecks. Scheduling for non-kba presses is also possible. On KBA presses, the job data are combined with presetting data from the prepress via CIP3 or JDF and passed on to the press console. PressWatch The function PressWatch enables the print manager to obtain an immediate update on the current status of jobs being printed and provides an overview of the present utilisation of all the printing presses on the network. The jobs being printed, counter states and the present printing speeds of the individual presses are displayed in the clearly laid-out PressWatch window, where they are updated continuously. A mouse click calls up detailed job and production data from a particular press. The most recent press status message is also displayed in plain text, alongside its relevant time-stamp. SpeedWatch The function SpeedWatch generates a time-speed diagram, in which all significant events and messages relating to the selected press are depicted. In this way, it is still possible, for example, to reconstruct the course of a particular job long after its actual completion. The press for which the time-speed diagram is to be generated is selected from a task list. The diagram contains all events which have been signalled automatically by the press in question. A yellow line represents makeready times, while a green line stands for production. The cursor marks the press status at a particular moment in time and an arrow button enables the user to jump to the next event. A zoom function permits modification of the time scale of the diagram to allow the presentation of the events to be adapted to business requirements or individual preferences. It is also possible to highlight certain events in the diagram. The user could thus search, for example, for withdrawals of sample sheets. 8 9

10 KBA LOGOTRONIC Sheetfed offset Job data Comprehensive information Integration of branch software L ogotronic professional can also be linked to the offices handling job scheduling and order processing. In combination with special branch software for order management, calculation and planning, it enables all important job details to be available throughout the whole network. KBA has already implemented appropriate practical solutions together with branch software specialists Hiflex and Rogler, among others. Logotronic provides all available data for automatic press presetting Job data are transferred to the Logotronic server when the job dockets are printed. If the plates are made on a computerto-plate system, the corresponding CIP3-/JDF-format file can also be sent to Logotronic and converted into presetting data for the press in question. The operator is presented a complete job queue on the console of the press. When a new job is selected from this

11 to-do list, Logotronic supplies the press with all the available preset and repeat job data. The results are enormous savings in makeready time and elimination of many of the unproductive administrative and manual tasks which otherwise burden the press operators. At the same time, the press operator is kept fully informed on coming jobs. If need arises, he can then vary the order of the scheduled jobs, either independently or in response to specific requests from the front office. This, in turn, ensures maximum flexibility in print production. Always in the picture Logotronic professional keeps management in the picture at all times and ensures that customer enquiries can always be answered with the most up-to-date information. All available data can be retrieved from any location, whether within the company or outside. Whether the print manager wishes to check the current work situation in the company from home, or perhaps receives a call from a customer while out of the office, a few clicks in a Web browser download the required information immediately and enable the manager to base decisions and statements on the latest data. Data security naturally plays a key role. For this reason, sensitive business data can only be accessed by authorised persons. Always well-informed. Users with specified access rights can call up job and production data from the Logotronic professional system wherever they may be
