1 Women s Mentorship Network 2 nd Annual National Symposium October 10 th -12 th, 2015 Cultivating The Conversation: Winning Together In A Complex World
2 Team WMN & Friends: We re so excited you are joining us for our second annual WMN National Symposium this weekend and I hope you are ready to be energized and encouraged by the wide variety of speakers, panels and opportunities to meet some of our force s real movers and shakers as we discuss Cultivating the Conversation: Winning Together in a Complex World. This year we ve added another day symposium and inclusion at the AUSA National Meeting with some world-class subject matter experts in the defense and corporate world all focused on the conversation to become a more gender intelligent force and inspire leaders, women and men, to reach their full potential in military service by cultivating strong mentorship networks. With the repeal of the Direct Ground Combat Assignment Rule and the Secretary of Defense's upcoming decision on whether to open previously closed military combat specialties, the need to amplify the discussion on changing cultural roles in our force is more important now than ever. The prospect of increased broadening opportunities for women in the military, to include some of our most demanding jobs in the inventory, will require our most talented leaders to take those reins and face the future threats head on. In order to adapt to a complex and sometimes ambiguous environment we need instruments such as mentorship to help transition junior leaders into strategic leaders capable of protecting our national interest. Mentoring offers the chance to educate both women and men on how better to respond to new roles, develop future capabilities, and produce optimal outputs needed for the future fight. Events like these don t happen by accident and we owe a debt of gratitude to our partners IBM, Johnson & Johnson, The Girls Lounge, Service Women s Action Network (SWAN), Deloitte, Women in Military Service for America Memorial, Women in International Security (WIIS), and Blue Star Families for their sustaining efforts to help us make this year s event a success. Again, thank you for joining us on this journey and lively conversation along the way! Learn. Leverage. Lead. Angie Holbrook WMN National President
3 Women s Mentorship Network Overview MISSION To empower women in the Armed Forces to reach their full potential in military service by cultivating strong mentorship networks and communities inclusive of all military and civilian service, gender, rank and affiliations. VISION To enrich our Armed Forces with a generation of strong, resilient, and adaptive leaders. WHY Today, women only make up 15% of the military active duty component, which creates a challenge for initiating and maintaining effective mentoring relationships and community to support the development of strong women leaders in the Armed Forces.
