Opening Message Page 2 2. ICON Recap School for 9 months, Key Club for 12 months. Hello Key Clubbers of 2B, I hope that everyone is enjoying their summer so far. Even though school may not be in session, does not mean its an end to our service. With all this free time on your hands you should plan ahead for the year to come for your school. Some things you may want to start to consider is implementing goals for your clubs. Goals would encourage and motivate you to obtain them over the school year. Make sure they are realistic and obtainable. Continue to stay active, even during the summer with summer service projects. Listed below service project ideas that your club could be participating in this summer : Car Wash Babysit for UNICEF Movies on the Field 5K Run/Walk Special Olympics Plant Trees and Flowers Teach Swim Lessons Host Event at a Nursing Home Clean up City Statues Graffiti Clean up Help at Local Animal Shelter Water your neighbours flower beds Volunteer at the national children s medical centre! Mow your neighbours lawns as a fund-raiser Collect cans from neighbours for a local food pantry. Be sure that your club is on track with everything due such as those directories that should be complete for nearly all the schools. Also be sure to read the newsletters carefully in order to be the best club you could be. Our division will start to implement social media in order to make contacting communications easier. Below are links that I highly encourage you to subscribe to in order to be as efficient as possible. Plan on having a DCM/ZEP/OTC in the late August/ early September Months, which will be mandatory for all officers in our division. For now, continue serving in your community, and enjoy your summer. 4 Get Connected! Like Capital of Key Club International on Facebook on Twitter Check out Officer of the Month I would like to recognize Jae Jun from Centreville High School for her great work as a secretary. Jae has been sending in timely monthly reports without being reminded by anyone. Jae understands her duties as Secretary and shows great characteristics in fulfilling her job. Keep up the great work Jae. leadership inclusiveness caring character building Key Leader Key Leader is a weekend experiential leadership program for today s young leaders. This life-changing event focuses on service leadership as the first, most meaningful leadership-development experience. A Key Leader will learn the most important lesson of leadership it comes from helping others succeed. Participants begin by attending a Key Leader conference, which is a weekend retreat. Large and small group workshops, discussions and team-building activities take place over the course of the weekend. Students have opportunities to learn leadership skills that will help them to change their schools, communities, and world for the better. While exploring leadership in a whole new way, participants will make amazing new friends and have experiences they will never forget. Positive, ongoing interaction with other Key Leader graduates offers continuing reinforcement, encouragement and growth of leadership skills. Upcoming Events in our area would be the West River Center in Churchton, MD on October 3-5, 2014 To register, visit KeyLeaderLocationsandDates/ and find the West River Center. Key Leader is highly encouraged as it is a great way to learn service leadership and develop great skills. If you or any officer/member from you club has attended Key Leader, please feel free to contact me with a testimonial and to be recognizes for your activities. For more information visit : Key Leader Testimonials Hey Key Clubbers! We would like to take a moment to inform you about Key Leader, a fantastic leadership event! Key Leader is a weekend leadership camp that allows you to meet other Key Clubbers from many other schools and areas. In addition to learning many new leadership skills and discovering new ways you can make a difference, you will have the opportunity to work with others and build your character through several different activities. When we attended Key Leader in October, we were welcomed at the start with our friendly team leaders and many other students. It was great to see their smiling faces and get to know them better through ice breaker activities that we played. We stayed in a very nice cabin and were to take advantage of the beautiful area during Saturday night s campfire and the ropes course that we took on with our teams! The hands-on leadership activities truly taught us how to become a better leader and help others, not just in our communities, but all over the world. 5 The ELIMINATE Project capitalkcdivision2b With the school year ending, try planning ideas for the year coming ahead. The Capital has pledged to raise $80,000 this year for ELIMINATE. With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. It will take US$110 million and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. It takes just $1.80 to provide a vaccine for a mother. Your club can do a million different fund-raisers such as: Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF Miracle Walk Eliminate wrist bands If you need help with any of the following fund-raisers feel free to contact me. Start planning a fund-raisers for next year with your club today Slepukhova, A.. (2014, June); Newsletter For more information visit : D-CON Chair Applications The biggest event we put on for our members every year is the Capital Leadership Convention. It will take place in Baltimore, March of We appoint a non-district officer to serve as the DCON Chair. They are responsible for helping the Board for planning and executing DCON. They are a non-voting member; however they must be someone who is dedicated, open-minded, patient, and most importantly organized. Due June 16th, The Governor s Project Every year the Governor is to choose a cause and design a project to implement within their term. This year, Governor Anastasia has chosen our project to be Key Club Outreach to Include Others otherwise known as KOTIO. Nearly 20% of Americans live with disabilities and 70% rely on family and friends for assistance with daily activities. With Inclusiveness being one of the Key Club International s core values, it is important that we extend our welcome to everyone in our communities. Several groups would benefit KOTIO. Not only would the kids and adults with disabilities feel like they are part of their communities, but Key Clubs will have an opportunity to plan and put on a service project together. The world of opportunities is unlimited when it comes to putting on your event. Below are a few ideas, but remember there are plenty more options out there! Teaching children with developmental disabilities skills like riding a bike or swimming Volunteering shifts at the local retirement centre Working with local organizations like Best Buddies and KEEN Host a Special Olympics in your Division Capital Key The Capital Key is the Official Newsletter of the Capital.
