CO2 handling in the Skagerrak/Kattegatregion The Interreg/Climit project Main project contributors: Chalmers (Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, S) GU (University of Gothenburg,S) Tel-Tek (Tel-Tek R&D Centre Porsgrunn, N) UiO (University of Oslo, N) Project coordinator: Dag Bjørnsen Tel-Tek, N 6th CO2GeoNet Open Forum, May Venice, San Servolo Island 5
CO 2 -EHR projects funded by Industry On-going. GEUS The laboratory is currently involved in various confidential projects funded by industry partners and related to CO 2 -EHR. The projects focus on several aspects such as recovery potential, chemical interactions, and caprock quality. 7 h CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum, April 17-19, 2012 Venice, San Servolo Island 6
CO 2 -EHR projects Dan Olsen, GEUS, and partners Chalk from the Tor and Ekofisk Formations of a Danish North Sea Core flooding experiments at the conditions of the reservoir. Both experiments started with a water-flooding, and then continued with a CO 2 -flooding. The Tor chalk produced 70.2 % OOIP during the water-flooding and 23.0 %OOIP during the CO 2 -flooding. The Ekofisk chalk produced 40.8 % OOIP during the water-flooding and 52.1 % OOIP during the CO 2 -flooding. The CO 2 saturation at the end of CO 2 -flooding was approximately 66% for both chalk types. Neither the Tor sample nor the Ekofisk sample showed evidence of dissolution after the experiments. Both samples remained within the elastic regime all through the experiments. A significant potential for CO 2 EHR is present in chalk, even after previously water-flooding. Ekofisk chalk that is non-economic for water-flooding may have potential for CO 2 EHR. 6 th CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum, May Venice, San Servolo Island 7

CO 2 -EHR related projects: Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation: Enhanced Oil Recovery through CO 2 utilization : The interplay between oil, water, CO 2, and chalk at reservoir conditions was studied based on sample material and data from the South Arne Field. The project is funded by the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation and was carried out in collaboration between Department of Chemical Engineering at DTU, Institute of Environment and Resources at DTU, GEO, DONG Energy, and GEUS. Flooding experiments at reservoir conditions were carried out at GEUS. The experiments provided valuable information about the behaviour of a chalk reservoir during a CO 2 flooding operation, in particular regarding the timing and amount of oil recovery for both the Ekofisk and Tor Formations (Danish North Sea). 7 h CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum, April 17-19, 2012 Venice, San Servolo Island 10
History of the Danish subsoil Act 1929 First exploration boreholes 1932 Denmark s first Subsoil Act was adopted 1934 F.F. Ravlin first concession for oil exploration 1936 Found salt, lead to firth concession, 50 years of concession (oil, gas, salt, sulphur) to include whole country Ravlin established the Danish American Prospecting company DAPC DAPCO sold to Gulf Refining Co Recovered salt in deep wells 1948 Ravlin's salt find at Harte was fake 1950 New subsoil act 1981 Law on the Use of the Danish underground May 26 th the EU directive was implemented into Danish legislation by an amendment of the Danish Subsoil act, among other statutory provisions th CO2GeoNet Open Forum, May Venice, San Servolo Island
What is allowed? CO2 geological storage allowed according to Subsoil Act, but the Minister/Parliament will not issue any license before 2020 Offshore, EHR possible, but unclear, can only be after debate in the Parliament In the governments energy strategy towards 2050 CCS is not an important component towards (March 15 th 2011) The government (May 12 th 2011) will not say no to CO2 storage, neither before That will prevent EOR to increase oil recovery and state revenue from the North Sea. At least onshore no storage Vattenfal refusal on Vedsted project (Oct. 14 th 2011) Small research projects most like not before 2020 The Directive ( 18) should not apply to projects with a total intended storage below 100 kilo tonnes, undertaken for research, development or testing of new products and processes. 6 th CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum, May Venice, San Servolo Island 12
Conclusion Funding for national projects very difficult unless for EHR or for international or Nordic cooperration 6 th CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum, May Venice, San Servolo Island 13
