3 EDITOR S NOTE Message From Honda Malaysia When I arrived, I was amazed at the progress of this country and impressed to learn that there is a sizeable population of Honda fans, an indication that the Honda brand is widely accepted in Malaysia. I have been working in Honda for 28 years now, with tenures between Painting Department at Saitama Factory and Honda America, Ohio. Through the years, Honda has consistently provided equal opportunities to all associates with the challenging spirit to realise new dreams. Within this nurturing environment, I hope our Malaysian associates will continue to keep up the efforts as we move towards a new era of global operations to serve customers worldwide. 4 Honda AND YOU: Owner s Story If every flower can nourish the soul through its grace and vibrancy, then the florist would be the bringer of love and delight. Meet Prudence Loh, florist and owner of Flower Cottage. Established in 1998, Flower Cottage has grown to become a thriving online business that caters nationwide and has since garnered the reputation to be the florist with a personal touch. The bubbly 40-year-old confesses that her passion for flowers began when she signed up for flower arrangement classes as a way to relieve stress. Realising that flowers have the power to brighten up the day or heal the soul, Prudence decided to retire from the corporate world to establish her very own florist business. In the early days, Flower Cottage was a half-shop lot at Jalan Yap Kwan Seng before we moved to Bangsar, reveals the mother of two girls. Not long after, we discovered that the business could reach out to a wider community through the Internet, so we developed an e-commerce website as a method for our nationwide customers to order our beautiful blooms without having to visit our shopfront. Besides conducting flower deliveries across the country, Flower Cottage offers gourmet hampers for special occasions. The florist also provides flower displays for corporate offices, with Maxis, Bloomberg and PricewaterhouseCoopers as clientele. Due to the nature of her cargo, she has to ensure that her blooms are in good condition during transportation. Therefore, the spaciousness of the CR-V and its dual zone air-conditioning system struck a chord with the jovial florist. The bouquets are often delivered in my CR-V to prevent them from drooping due to heat or being crushed. That is why it is my vehicle of choice, especially when I have to cater for wedding ceremonies and make corporate deliveries, both of which require flowers in huge amounts. Besides striving for quality blooms upon delivery, she also believes in delivering the essence of a gift the heart. Many a time, we help our customers articulate their messages upon delivery, whether it is singing a song or giving our recipients a warm hug. It gives me great joy to see the smiles on people s faces whenever they receive a bouquet of beautiful flowers and hear a heart-warming message. As Prudence would also gladly point out, it has been a rewarding experience. Once, a customer approached us with the intention of proposing to his beloved, but he had no idea how to. So, we helped pick the right flowers with a well-crafted message and advised him on the proposal. When we found out that she said yes, we were completely overjoyed! Since then, we remained friends and he became a loyal customer, she recounts. Evidently, being a florist has brought countless joy into her life. When asked about her hopes and dreams for her thriving business, it was surprisingly simple and sweet. 6 Honda AND YOU: Dealer s Story Reinforcing 24 years of presence in the Muar community A Honda Mobile Roadshow was recently organised by Syarikat Motor G.S. Tay in Muar, Johor with aplomb. From 23 to 25 September, the grounds of Dewan Jubli Intan were graced by a fleet of the latest Honda lineup, including the much anticipated Honda Insight. In order to reinforce the Honda brand and G.S. Tay s presence in Muar, we have been actively involved in the Honda Mobile Roadshow for five years, says Edmund Tay, the humble and friendly Sales Manager of G.S. Tay. Although our focus is to cater to Muar customers, we also extend our service to customers from neighbouring towns, including Tangkak and Pagoh. In fact, we organised the Honda Mobile Roadshow in Tangkak last year. Edmund revealed that before the roadshow, G.S. Tay distributed leaflets and kept their existing customers informed through text messages. As a result, as many as 2,500 visitors turned up for the three-day event. The customers, many who arrived with their families in tow, were immediately greeted by Sales Advisors. After a thorough explanation of the cars features, customers could then take any of the eight test-drive cars for a spin. While the adults fawned over the cars, the children were treated to face painting and racing simulations. 7 The Honda Mobile Roadshow in Muar attracted as many as 2,500 visitors in the three-day event. Customers could take any of the eight test-drive cars for a spin around the neighbourhood. Honda goodies were given to lucky customers who could answer the quizzes correctly. Having established itself as the sole Honda dealership in Muar for the past 24 years, G.S. Tay has cultivated a long-standing reputation for excellent customer service. We have been doing well in Muar since the eighties, remarks Mr Tay Geok Seng, Managing Director and owner of G.S. Tay. These days, customers look forward to product quality and good service. By placing service as our utmost priority, many of our customers actually return to us for purchase and after-sales service. 8 BREAKTHROUGH Ever wondered what our future society would look like? Based on collective efforts in managing greenhouse gas emissions globally, the speed and intensity of which new technologies are implemented could very well accelerate our dream of achieving a clean, healthy society with zero emissions. Well, the future is almost here. For Honda, this is not a mere castle in the air. In fact, the dream of realising a low-carbon society is gaining traction and may soon be within reach for some communities. In a race to achieve clean energy for everyone, Honda has started testing programmes for its range of next-generation personal mobility products in Japan (Saitama and Kumamoto prefectures) and the US (Torrance, California), and plans to launch a similar programme in China. The effectiveness of the solar-powered charging station and Honda s electric vehicles are being tested at the prefectural facilities in Japan to help realise a low-carbon mobility society. 08 with dreams

9 Quick chargers are available around the prefectures and as an added convenience, drivers can search for charging station locations via their smartphones that are connected to the InterNavi system. For testing purposes, the Monpal is equipped with a recording device that stores a variety of vehicle operation and performance data. The EV-neo offers convenience for students and local businesses to ride within the neighbourhood. Based on the compact Fit, the driving range of this electric testing vehicle exceeds 160km when charged with a 200-volt power source for six hours. The plug-in Hybrid testing vehicle features a 2.0L i-vtec engine with two high output electric motors, built specifically for testing its operations in three drive modes: all-electric, gasoline-electric hybrid and engine drive modes. The programme is aimed at designing greener solutions and enhancing the quality of life of local communities by testing Honda s electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles, electric scooters and power products based on electromotive technologies in real-world urban transportation environments. Honda s devoted vision of achieving a low-carbon mobility society means that the residents of these selected cities are getting a fresh taste of the future. In the on-going trial with the respective cities, residents are encouraged to share the EV facilities in their area while Honda evaluates the convenience of its use and benefits. This real-world study is certainly notable, as it helps determine optimal locations of EV charging stations based on the travelling routes used by the local citizens this includes senior citizens who get to experience the convenience of using the Monpal ML200 electric carts while students and local business operators are encouraged to test the EV-neo electric scooters on short journeys to school or during business deliveries. Even the electric vehicle and plugin hybrid vehicle is available for residents and tourists to expand its usage. Always placing the customers at the heart of their initiatives, Honda is also testing a support tool using the InterNavi Premium Club services to improve customer convenience and safety. Honda developed this unique interactive information network service to deliver real-time information to the driver from the InterNavi Information Centre, such as Honda s solar-powered charging stations. Using either a smartphone or a car navigation screen, customers can search for charging stations, set destinations, confirm vehicle conditions as well as access ecodriving information all of which ultimately works to make navigation on a Honda EV or plug-in hybrid vehicle more enjoyable. While the Electric Vehicle Testing Program has been running for a year now, it may still be too early to pioneer a shift in society s adoption in electric vehicles. It surely is not time yet to say goodbye to petrol stations but we are certain that Honda will continue exploring the potential of greener mobility for a cleaner tomorrow. with dreams 09

The sage advice, sprung from Honda s Philosophy of the Joy of Creating, is manifested in every technological endeavour through the times. It was evident that each product was designed to address a societal need and thus, helped define each automotive era since the 1970s. In 1972, Honda Civic was born out of the need to develop an economical people s car. Instead of a rear-wheel-drive layout, the Civic was built as a front-wheel-drive with decreased thickness of steel sheets to achieve new levels of vehicle lightness. With the Civic, Honda also introduced independent struttype suspension into the compact car market, giving the car a sportier drive. In 1977, the Honda Accord 4-door saloon was introduced during a time of energy crises and emissions regulations. Besides boasting a CVCC engine which delivered excellent fuel economy, it also fulfilled demands for space, comfort and style. Since then, the Accord has been given top honours in the industry, further sealing its legacy as Honda s bestselling vehicle. At the end of 1977, Honda held a brainstorming session to address safety needs, particularly active safety. The 4-wheel steering (4WS) system evolved from a simple brainstorming idea into the production of a car that would set new standards in handling and dynamic performance. In 1987, the Honda Prelude became the world s first passenger car with unique steering angle sensing 4WS system. In the 1980s, using a Tall Boy concept that defied convention, the Honda City created a new market for light vehicles with excellent dynamic performance and low fuel consumption. From the moment it was introduced, the powerful combination of product and image took Japan by storm and won enormous support among the young. In the spirit of pure racing and to provide customers with superior driving pleasure, the Civic Type R was developed in With a 1.6-litre DOHC VTEC engine that gave a maximum output of 185ps at 8,200rpm, the Civic Type R melded affordability, exhilarating driving performance and everyday usability. 14 Honda MALAYSIA NEWS Giving Malacca a facelift, one tree at a time Not one to shy away in fulfilling its commitment towards sustainable development and caring for the local environment, Honda Malaysia stepped up to offer its help to clean up and beautify the historical city of Malacca after the local council, Majlis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah (MBMB), announced its quest to achieve a balance between Eco and Technology through the Green Earth programme. Honda Malaysia, whose manufacturing plant is located at Alor Gajah, Malacca, aimed to send a powerful message to local residents on environmental conservation with its treeplanting campaign, MBMB with Honda Move Towards Greener Malacca. The exercise came after Honda Malaysia donated four units of Honda Insight to the Malacca state government in April 2011 in support of the state s vision to become a Green Technology City. In true community spirit, the campaign brought together Honda management, 200 associates and council members of MBMB over a two-day period to plant a total of 530 trees at Taman Bandaraya Bukit Serindit and Malacca River. 14 with dreams

Heeding Malacca s call for a greener and cleaner community, Honda Malaysia launched a two-day treeplanting and gotong-royong initiative to spruce up the town of Malacca. In the first session on 14th July 2011, Honda Malaysia s former Vice President, Mr. Yuji Matsuzaki, and Senior General Manager, Dato Azhar Bin Abd Wahab, led the tree-planting exercise while the second session, held on 21st July 2011, included a gotong-royong session at Malacca River led by General Manager, Mr. Azminuddin Mohamad. The Malacca River flows through the centre of Malacca Town, making it one of the most prominent features of the city. Once dubbed the Venice of the East because of the convergence of Eastern and Western traders in the early 1400 s, modern cafes and restaurants now dot the riverbank to attract tourists and locals alike. As with most popular tourist attractions, the quaint river has become populated with garbage chucked irresponsibly, resulting in a polluted river that is a sore sight for tourists who throng the river for a historical cruise daily. Harnessing Honda s environmental pledge, Blue Skies for Our Children, to realise a sustainable community, the tree-planting and gotong-royong exercise is one of Honda Malaysia s recent initiative to improve the local environment for everyone. Besides participating in local community projects as such, Honda Malaysia has been proactively implementing sustainable methods within the Alor Gajah manufacturing plant to be more energy-efficient and reduce carbon emissions. YB Datuk MD Yunos Bin Husin, State Committee Chairman of Housing, Local Government and Environment, was pleased that Honda Malaysia and Malacca City Council joined hands in support of MBMB s call to a greener and cleaner Malacca. 20 WHAT S ON Honda Honda s latest engine oil spends less fuel Honda s latest innovation of fully synthetic SM0W-20 engine oil was put to test recently through a fuel challenge event organised for Honda dealers. Their sole mission was to test the new engine oil s performance and fuel efficiency compared to a competing engine oil of 10W-40 (Brand X). The result? Honda s new fully synthetic SM0W-20 engine oil was proven to save 7% more fuel compared to Brand X! Rigorous tests were made to ascertain the fuel efficiency of the SM0W-20 engine oil. The fuel challenge brought together representatives from Honda Malaysia and Idemitsu Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand who travelled more than 2,000km across Peninsular Malaysia over 5 days and 4 nights. The teams and their vehicles were tested on several criteria - average fuel economy, average speed, drive time, fuel used, distance travelled, road type, weather, time and traffic flow while driving through various road conditions that comprised of hilly, winding, coastal, village and highway roads. Through rain and shine, days and nights, smooth and congested traffic, the challenge took them from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan, Penang, Johor and Putrajaya before ending at Petaling Jaya. 21 Honda Malaysia ranks highest in J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2011 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study SM Mr. Yoichiro Ueno (right), Honda Malaysia Managing Director and CEO, receiving the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2011 Malaysia SSI Study award. Honda Malaysia celebrated a new milestone when results from the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2011 Malaysia Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) Study SM revealed its highest ranking out of nine other brands, a significant achievement for the company in delivering New-Vehicle Sales Satisfaction. Honda Malaysia thanks the customers for their support and attributes this success to all Honda 3S Centres who worked hard and are committed to upholding the Honda brand image. The study, now in its ninth year, assesses new-vehicle owner satisfaction with sales and delivery experiences by examining factors that shapes the overall satisfaction, such as the delivery process, delivery timing, paperwork, dealer facility, salesperson, deal and sales initiation. The 2011 Malaysia SSI Study collected responses from 2,478 newvehicle owners who purchased their vehicles between September 2010 and April 2011, calculating the result based on a 1,000-point scale - the highest overall score signifies greater satisfaction of a newvehicle sales and delivery process. In 2011, the overall industry sales satisfaction average is 799, an increase of 18 points from 781 in According to Mr. Mohit Arora, the Executive Director of J.D. Power Asia Pacific, Singapore, Honda Malaysia ranked highest with a score of 815 points which is above the industry average score of 799 points. Honda did exceptionally well in four out of the seven factors: sales initiation, dealer facility, salesperson and delivery. The high score of 815 achieved by Honda Malaysia this year was also a marked improvement from its last year s score of 788. Honda Malaysia puts customers first in light of crisis The heavy rainfalls that Thailand experienced since July have seen parts of the country submerged in water. The flood has not only caused the loss of many lives, it has also left thousands displaced and forced many companies to shut down their operations. Honda s plant in Ayutthaya was one of those affected. In October, Honda Automobile (Thailand) Co., Ltd (HATC) announced the shutdown of its Ayutthaya plant due to the severe flood. As such, this natural disaster also affected the production of Honda s CKD models at the Malaysian plant in Alor Gajah, Malacca, as HATC supplies a substantial number of parts for City, Civic, Accord and CR-V that are assembled here. By end October, Honda Malaysia announced that it was studying the feasibility of sourcing parts suppliers from other countries as production in the Malacca plant had to come to a temporary halt. In the wake of the disaster, Honda Malaysia promptly announced a customer support scheme to accommodate the delay of deliveries to customers who have placed booking for the CKD models before 20th October As a compensation to the inevitable delay of delivery, cash rebate vouchers of RM2,000 was offered to customers who maintained the booking or switched to other available models. Customers who cancel the booking, meanwhile, will receive a full refund of the booking fee. They will also be entitled to a RM2,000 cash rebate voucher that is claimable if a new booking and registration are done before 30th June Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yoichiro Ueno expressed Honda Malaysia s deepest condolences to the flood victims in Thailand. We hope that the country makes a swift recovery from the damages of the flood. We apologise for the delay in delivery and we appreciate the understanding of our customers regarding the situation. The good news is that with the exception of Jazz that is imported from Thailand, our CBU models such as Insight and Freed are not affected and we have sufficient stock to fulfil the current market demand, added Mr. Ueno.
