1 Jack Hwang Martial Arts 1432 S.W. 89 Oklahoma City, OK Phone
2 Dear Friends, An Open Letter from Grand Master Jack Hwang: I am very proud that I am a member of the community of the great city of Oklahoma City, as well as a citizen of the United States of America. I was born near Pusan Harbor in South Korea. I came to Oklahoma City in the summer of 1964, where I opened my Martial Arts school, teaching Tae Kwon do (generally known in those days as Karate ). Since then, I have taught over 20,000 individuals at the school, as well as a number of institutional classes, including universities and police departments. Among these have been classes at the University of Oklahoma, Langston University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Saint Gregory s College, the Shawnee Police Department, and the Yukon Police Department. As a resident of Oklahoma City, I have raised five children, and have twelve lovely grandchildren. Along this line, I have several Martial Arts instructors who have trained under me for most of their lives since childhood or their teenage years. Now they are teaching other Oklahomans and their children. As head of the United States Tae Kwon Do Team, I represented the USA and Oklahoma at the 1 st World Tae Kwon Do Championship in Seoul, Korea, in 1973, where our team won Second Place in a close contest. Further, I received an award from the Governor of the State of Oklahoma for Special Contribution to the people of the City and State of Oklahoma. I have also been inducted into the United states Martial Arts Hall of Fame, the United States Grandmasters Society Hall of Fame, and the Oklahoma State Martial Arts Hall of Fame. For ten years, my students and I participated in the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, raising funds for research through Martial Arts demonstrations. Now I sincerely hope that I can continue to help as many children as I can with Martial Arts training and discipline because our children are our most important asset in this society. I truly need and request your help and cooperation in this endeavor. Sincerely, Grandmaster Jack Hwang Jack Hwang Martial Arts

5 AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR MARTIAL ARTS In our program we teach important Life Skills to children: FOCUS - Identifying what is important in life. Closely related to the phrase attention span, Focus is a needed trait in students. It can be the difference between passing and failing grades. Martial Arts training encourages Focus through structured instruction of activities young people usually think of as Fun! And because most lessons are orally taught and physically performed, listening skills improve, enhanced by tactile inputs and repetition. Excess energy is used, and overall benefits accrue. DISCIPLINE - Involving oral instruction, better listening skills and group dynamics, Discipline is encouraged throughout Martial Arts lessons and begins to emerge from within the student. Actual steps are taken that add importance to life. RESPECT - Students of Martial Arts learn the value of respect through the Focus and Discipline they develop. They learn to respect themselves, their families, and those around them, regardless of age. They learn to treat others the way they wish to be treated. FAMILY - Few words are warmer than Family. The concept of Family consists of love, respect, self-sacrifice, and harmony. We must teach the value of Family and Parents to our children. Martial Arts lessons promote enhanced family membership through an interesting activity the whole family can appreciate. The resulting closeness is a real advantage in life. TEAMWORK - Practicing, training, and working with others develops a form of team spirit and Teamwork that identifies and upholds the individual member as an individual and a team member. Working with others helps to obtain happiness and meaning in life.
6 CONFIDENCE - Taken together, the benefits of Martial Arts develop students who understand teamwork and cooperation, while standing on their own two feet to make their own decisions and choices. Confidence is necessary to overcome peer pressure. LEADERSHIP - Martial Arts training develops Leadership through maturity and life perspective. By studying and learning Martial Arts, the student learns responsibility that points to leadership in life. HEALTH & FITNESS - Martial Arts provides an ideal blend of flexibility, strengthening and application training. Many have noted that the aging clock had seemed to stop for Martial Arts practitioners. Martial Arts training is a lifelong activity unlike any other, and yet integrates well with other Health & Fitness regimens. Good health is a key that affects the happiness of life. SELF-DEFENSE - While not the main purpose of Martial Arts training, Self-Defense is a by-product that grows with increased awareness and perception. Trouble is avoided before it even presents itself. The Martial Arts student learns to fight to avoid fighting. JACK HWANG
