2 WELCOME Contact Social Sciences Ms. Barbara Patterson Department Administrative Assistant SHIPLEY HALL 200 I street NE, Miami, Oklahoma bpatterson@neo.edu to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Social Sciences department. This department has programs in Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Sociology, Native American Studies, Social Sciences, and Pre- Elementary Education. Our most important function as a department is to prepare our students to succeed at a four-year institution. This department has the experience, knowledge, and enthusiasm to help all our students be successful. All programs in this department have transfer agreements with the surrounding four-year colleges and universities. This gives you confidence as a student that the classes you take in Social Sciences will transfer. We look forward to having you on our campus! 4 EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION I WANT TO BE A GRADE SCHOOL TEACHER. HOW CAN NEO HELP? At NEO we work very hard to ensure that a student who attends could complete all the basic courses needed to move directly into a 4 year university and into an education program. Many education programs require classes such as sociology, psycology, speech and geography as pre-requisites, all of which can be taken at NEO in a smaller classroom atmosphere and for less money. We also work to offer basic child development classes and lab experiences that help students to make sure this is the career path for them before accumulating too many credit hours. As a way to help our students gain experience in working with children, we are one of the few 2 year colleges in the state with a lab school. CAREERS School Teacher (Kindergarten 3rd grade) Head Start Teacher Early Childhood Specialists Nannies CLASSES Activity Planning Child Development Dynamics of Family Planning Early Childhood Education Health and Safety of the Preschool Child Infants and Toddlers Literature for Children Nutrition for Children Foundations in Early Childhood

5 CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT We offer basic child development classes and lab experiences that help students to be sure this is the career path for them. We are one of the few two-year colleges in Oklahoma with a Child Development lab school for students! There is also a Scholars Program for daycare workers needing additional hours in the field. DEGREE OPTIONS Associate in Arts Early Childhood Education Certificate of Mastery Child Development CONTACTS The teachers and staff at NEO A & M College challenged me and encouraged me to be the best in whatever I was doing, and I was able to meet those challenges head on through their guidance and support.
