3 Welcome, As president, I am pleased to welcome you to TRI-OKC, the triathlon club of Oklahoma City. Multisport is one of the fastest growing areas of athletic achievement in the United States, and we re excited that you re a part of it. TRI-OKC represents a diverse group with members of all ages and backgrounds. Our member s experience ranges from participation in the famous Hawaiian Ironman, to those who are new to the sport and may not have yet completed their first event. We meet on the last Monday of every month for group meetings. Other events, socials, and workouts are posted either on the front page of our club website, or on our club s message board. Be sure to visit both, as they offer a wealth of knowledge for people new to the sport as well as those looking for ways to shave a few seconds and achieve a PR. Included in this welcome packet you will find information to help introduce you to our sport. Up front, you will find our annual club event calendar of events produced and sponsored by TRI-OKC. Other area events can be found by visiting the national calendar at We have also included maps of local gyms, as well as local rides that our club members regularly do. Finally, we ve included a list of advertisements from local running and bicycle shops. These shops usually offer a discount to TRI-OKC members, which is one of the many advantages of joining TRI- OKC. To join TRI-OKC, simply visit the club home page, and click on the Join TRI OKC Now link on the right side of the page. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know. 27 Oklahoma River Trails C I T Y O F O K L A H O M A C I T Y The Oklahoma River Trails contain 13 miles of multiuse, asphalt trails, which are located on the north and south banks of the river. The trails are level with little change in grade. Perhaps the best feature of the river's trail system is that it's free of motorized vehicle crossings. Walkers, runners, rollerbladers, skateboarder, cyclists and those using disability mobility aids are welcome to use the trails. The north trail is six miles in length. Visitors can access the north side of the Oklahoma River trails from the following parking areas: Regatta Park, off Byers Avenue, just west of the Byers Avenue Bridge SW 15th, between Walker and Robinson Wheeler Park, SW 9th and Shartel The south trail is seven miles long. Parking lots on the south side are located at: SW 15th and Meridian River Park, SW 8th and Agnew Wiley Post Park, SW 17th and Robinson SW 15, just east of Portland 27

28 Mountain Biking/Hiking Trails C I T Y O F O K L A H O M A C I T Y The Bluff Creek Trail is a single loop with tight turns around trees and some moderate technical sections. A dirt road loops around the area and crosses the trail in several spots. Oklahoma Earthbike Fellowship currently maintains the trail. This trail is a multi-use trail and is used by hikers and cyclists. Be cautious when riding fast and courteous when meeting other trail users. Length: 3.5+ miles of single track Parking Areas: Parking is located at Pat Murphy Park, located on the northwest corner of Hefner and Meridian, approximately 1 mile west of Lake Hefner Parkway. Surface Type: Natural trail The Lake Stanley Draper Trail consists of three connecting loops that can be ridden consecutively for a distance of about 12 miles. The level of difficulty ranges from very easy (green loop) to more challenging (yellow loop) to more difficult (red loop). The trail consists of 99% singletrack, mostly tight twisting turns with a few faster open sections. Green and red loops flow well with nice turns and a few V-trees. The yellow section is different with bigger drops and wooden bridges. A portable toilet and picnic tables are near the parking lot. The Oklahoma Earthbike Fellowship is involved with improvement to the trail and parking area. The program operates on a 50% match basis, which allows the fellowship to match the grant amount with in-kind volunteer labor. Length: 12 miles Surface Type: Natural trail Parking Areas: From I-240, take the Douglas exit. Travel north on Douglas to SE 74th Street. Go east one mile to Post Road. Turn south approximately half a mile to the trail entrance. Parking is on the east side of the road. 28

29 Lake Hefner Trails C I T Y O F O K L A H O M A C I T Y The Lake Hefner Trails surround the lake and connect with its many recreational areas. A section of the trail is the existing on-road bicycle lane along the dam. Portable toilets and drinking fountains can be found along the route. Length: 9.1 miles Parking Areas: See map for details. Surface Type: 12-foot wide asphalt multipurpose trail. Some 6-foot wide pedestrian-only trails located on the east side of the lake. Other Attractions: Playgrounds, Lake Hefner Golf Course, picnic areas, benches, fishing docks, sailing, sail boarding, restaurants and ball fields and of course, Lake Hefner itself. Currently, the Dam portion of the trails is closed for construction. 29

38 TRI OKC Transition Area Dos and Don ts Do: * find your spot in transition if they are assigned. If not assigned, pick your favorite camping spot for the next couple hours. The ends are always nice places to be. *keep all of your racing gear on the side of the rack that the majority of your bike is on. Arrange your gear in the small space under your bike. Try not to scatter yourself too far forward or too far to the sides. Usually you have 6 bikes to a rack and things can get pretty crowded. *know where your area is located from both the entrance and exit to transition. It s not fun to get lost and search frantically for your bike. Use a brightly colored towel or bag to catch your attention. *ask someone for advice on how to set up your gear if you ve never done this before. Practice setting up your transition area before the race so you ll know where everything is located and you can quickly transition from one sport to the next. *put your helmet on your head and buckle your strap BEFORE you take your bike off the rack. When returning, hang your bike back before you unbuckle and remove your helmet. *mount your bike AFTER the mount line when leaving transition. Someone should be yelling at the mount and dismount line to let you know when it s OK to get on your bike. When returning from the ride, dismount your bike BEFORE the line. Someone will probably verbally alert you if you don t get off in time. DON T: *ever get naked in transition. Nobody wants to get to know you that well. It s not only against USAT rules, but you might frighten and scar the other participants. The best bet is to wear the same clothes throughout the entire race. You may add or subtract clothes on top of your base layer, but no nudity is allowed. *ride your bike in the transition area. You may not only get a penalty, you may get DQ d. Walk your bike in and out of transition. This includes before and after the race as well. *be upset at the people yelling at the mount and dismount line. They re there to alert you to get on and off your bike at the appropriate time. They like to yell- let them have their fun. *take up too much transition space. Space on and around the racks is very limited. Use the minimum amount of space needed to set your gear out. Play nicely with the competitors around you. *touch your bike without your helmet on and fastened when leaving transition, and don t take your helmet off until your bike is re-racked (yes, this was covered above, but it s really important). *forget to have fun out there. Triathlons and duathlons are some of the most fun you can have. Enjoy the day and have a great time!!!! Good luck!!! 38
