Students who successfully complete SL1, register with BASI and fulfil the relevant prerequisites will be eligible to attend BASI Alpine Level AAC is a trial course that will initially be delivered in winter Subject to the availability of course places it may be completed prior to SL3.

2 Ski Foundation 1 (SF1) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 5 x Days. (1:8 as DT) The aim of the SF1 course is to provide the Alpine skiing foundation skills required for a student to be a party member on slopes / tracks within a recognised ski area. At least 20% of the course will be dedicated to off piste skiing techniques. Demonstrate foundation skiing knowledge. 4 Perform foundation skiing skills. Understand foundation leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing. Apply foundation risk management in relation to skiing. Implement appropriate foundation emergency procedures for skiing. Formative practical assessment of the student's ability to safely ski lower grade pisted ski slopes. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications Open to all personnel. Students must be fit to attend the course. Nil. Delivered by SL1 or above May ski with other SF1/2/3's in groups of not less than 3 inside the boundaries of a patrolled recognised ski area, within the limits of their 10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as Equals) ability and experience, under the indirect supervision of an SL1 (instructor must be close by and contactable) within an overall ratio of 1:8. 11 Remit (Led Groups) Nil. 12 Remit (Distributed Training) Nil. 14 Currency Students are advised to start and maintain a skiing log book. 3 Ski Foundation 2 (SF2) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 5 x Days. (1:8 as DT) The aim of the SF2 course is to enhance and develop students in intermediate Alpine Skiing skills with an emphasis ( a minimum of 40% course time) on 'off piste' skiing techniques. Demonstrate foundation skiing knowledge. Perform foundation skiing skills. Demonstrate foundation leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing. 4 Apply foundation risk management in relation to skiing. Implement appropriate foundation emergency procedures for skiing. Demonstrate the use of avalanche tranceivers. Demonstrate uphill touring techniques. Demonstrate emergency procedures in potential avalanche terrain. Formative practical assessment of the student's ability to safely ski on intermediate grade, pisted slopes and demonstrate an awareness of defensive skiing techniques in off piste conditions. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications SF1 As recommended by the Instr that delivered SF1. 4 Ski Foundation 3 (SF3) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 5 x Days. (1:6 as DT) The aim of the SF3 course is to provide Alpine ski touring foundation skills required for a student to be a party member on recognised basic ski touring expeditions. Demonstrate advanced skiing knowledge. Perform advanced skiing skills in all terrain. Demonstrate foundation leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing. 4 Apply foundation risk management in relation to skiing. Implement appropriate emergency procedures for skiing. Demonstate an understanding of avalanche phenomena, snowpack evaluation and safe travel. Demonstrate the construction of an emergency shelter. Demonstrate the ability to plan and lead a multi day basic ski tour. Perform to a good standard uphill touring techniques. Formative practical assessment of the student's ability to safely ski recognised, basic alpine ski touring routes. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications SF2 As recommended by the instructor who delivered SF2. Delivered by SL3 or above. 10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as Equals) May ski with other SF1/2/3's in groups of not less than 3 inside the boundaries of a patrolled recognised ski area, within the limits of their ability and experience, under the indirect supervision of an SL1 (instructor must be close by and contactable) within an overall ratio of 1:8. When taking part in ski tours away from an alpine ski area, an SF3 may only operate under the guidance of an SL3 within a ratio of 1:6. 11 Remit (Led Groups) Nil. 12 Remit (Decentralised AT) Nil. 14 Currency Students are advised to start and maintain a skiing log book. 19 Location T4 Centres run 5 day courses combined with 5 days continuation training. Courses may also be conducted by Units as DT.

5 Ski Leader 1 (SL1) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 10 x Days. (1:6) The aim of the SL1 is to assess the instructional skills required to deliver SF1 as DT. Demonstrate instructional skiing knowledge. Perform instructional skiing skills. 4 Demonstrate instructional leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing. Apply instructional risk management in relation to skiing. Implement appropriate instructional emergency procedures for skiing. Demonstrate the ability to introduce the base level of ski touring by leading and instructing a group in variable conditions. Written exam and practical assessment of all key training objectives. Practical assessment will take place on pisted ski slopes and off piste terrain. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications SF3 Minimum of 10 days CT or as recommended by the instructor that awarded SF3. 10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as Equals) 11 Remit (Led Groups) 12 Remit (Distributed Training) May ski independently within a recognised ski area within their own limits and ability, however individuals are strongly advised to remain in groups where possible. May deliver CT and SF1 within the confines of a ski area within a ratio of 1:8. May deliver CT and SF1 as DT within the confines of a ski area within a ratio of 1:8. 14 Currency Students are required to maintain a skiing log book. 18 NGB Equivalent BASI 1 (Alpine). 19 Location ATC run 10 day courses.

6 Ski Leader 2 (SL2) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 10 x Days. (1:6) The aim of the SL2 course is to develop students to assist an SL3 to lead novices on recognised alpine ski touring routes. Demonstrate advanced skiing knowledge. Perform advanced skiing skills in an off piste environment. Demonstrate enhanced leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing and ski touring. 4 Apply advanced risk management in relation to skiing and ski touring. Implement appropriate advanced emergency procedures for skiing and ski touring. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of avalanche dangers, including stability tests, safe travel and release mechanisms. Demonstrate an advanced practical knowledge of navigation to the equivalent standard of MLT. Practical assessment on all key objectives. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications SL1. MLT strongly recommended. 7 Pre-Course Exemption Students can be exempt the requirement for MLT on production of a mountaineering logbook annotated with equivalent experience. 10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as Equals) Logged a minimum of 10 days ski touring experience since SL1, must have delivered a min of 2 SF1 courses as DT. May ski as a party of 3 on recognised ski tours, in non-remote locations within their own skill set and experience. 11 Remit (Led Groups) May deliver CT and SF1/2 as DT within the confines of a ski area at a ratio of 1:8. 12 Remit (Distributed Training) May deliver CT and SF1/2 as DT within the confines of a ski area within a ratio of 1:8. 14 Currency Students are required to maintain a skiing log book. 15 Royal Marine (RM) RM ML2 17 Special Forces (SF) MC 19 Location ATC run 10 day courses.

7 Advanced Avalanche Course (AAC) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 5 x Days. (1:6) The aim of the AAC is to train and assess students in the theoretical and practical aspects of avalanche risk management. State the formation and nature of avalanches and the hazards involved Apply personal and group safety measures and perform companion rescue Recognise avalanche terrain 4 Participate in organised search and rescue Describe significant properties of the mountain snowpack Collect and record weather, snowpack and avalanche occurrence data State the factors that are applied in snow stability evaluation State elements of operational risk management and decision making Written exam and practical assessment of all key objectives. Practical assessment should take place on Ski Leader 2 terrain. Students must have completed SF3; SL1 or SL2 is recommended 6 Pre-Course Qualifications Student should normally be an Offr or an NCO. Personnel of any rank may be considered but such applications must be justified by the individual's reporting Offr. Completed a minimum of 10 days ski touring after completion of the SF3. A strong mountaineering/ ski touring logbook is required, as approved by the CI of the T4 Centre. Conditions/Remit (Operating as 10 Equals) Nil. 11 Remit (Led Groups) Nil. 12 Remit (Distributed Training) Nil. 14 Currency Students are required to maintain a skiing and mountaineering log book. 19 Location T4 Centres run 5 day courses.

8 Ski Leader 3 (SL3) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 10x Days. (1:6) The aim of the SL3 course is to assess students in the advanced Alpine Ski Touring techniques required to lead novice groups on recognised nonglaciated ski touring routes. Demonstrate advanced skiing knowledge. Perform advanced skiing skills. Demonstrate advanced leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing and ski touring. Apply advanced risk management in relation to skiing and ski touring. 4 Implement appropriate advanced emergency procedures for skiing. Demonstrate an advanced practical understanding of winter navigation to the equivalent standard of Winter Mountain (Training). Demonstrate an advanced understanding of avalanche dangers, including stability tests, safe travel and release mechanisms. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of emergency procedures in an avalanche incident. Written exam and practical assessment of all key training objectives. Practical assessment should take place on Alpine ski touring terrain. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications SL2, MLT. Advanced avalanche cse strongly recommended. Logged a minimum of 10 days ski touring experience since SL2. Must have delivered a min of 2 SF2 courses as DT. 10 Conditions/Remit (Operating as Equals) 11 Remit (Led Groups) May ski as a party of 3 within their own qualification limits and ability in an ski touring (non-glacial) environment worldwide. May deliver CT and SF1/2/3 as DT within the confines of a Alpine ski area at a ratio of 1:8 or lead a group on single or multi day recognised Ski Tours over non glaciated terrain at a ratio of 1:6. 12 Remit (Distributed Training) May deliver CT and SF1/2/3 as DT within the confines of a ski area within a ratio of 1:8 for SF1/2 and 1:6 for SF3. 14 Currency Students are required to maintain a skiing log book. 19 Location ATC run 10 day courses.

9 Ski Mountain Instructor Training (SMT) 1 Type of Course Training. 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 10 x Days. (1:2) The aim of the SMT course is to train the instructional skills required to lead groups on ski mountaineering expeditions. Demonstrate instructional skiing knowledge. Perform instructional skiing skills. Demonstrate instructional leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing and ski mountaineering. 4 Apply instructional risk management in relation to skiing and ski mountaineering. Implement appropriate instructional emergency procedures for skiing. Demonstrate the ability to instruct to an advanced level crevasse rescue skills. Demonstrate the ability to instuct students ecole de glace, snow and ice skills including the use of ropes in the winter environment. Demonstrate an understanding of the TO. Students must have completed SL3, AMF, WMT and AAC qualifcations. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications Student should be an Offr or an NCO. Personnel of any rank may be considered but such applications must be justified by the individual's reporting Offr. Completed a minimum of 10 days ski touring after completion of the SL3. A strong mountaineering logbook is required to be approved by the CI of the T4 Centre. Conditions/Remit (Operating as May ski worldwide as a party of 3 within their own skill set and experience 10 Equals) on glacial terrain. 10 Ski Mountain Instructor (SMI) 2 Course Duration (Ratio) 10 x Days. (1:2) The aim of the SMI course is to assess the instructional skills required to lead groups on ski mountaineering expeditions. Demonstrate instructional leadership, instruction and coaching in relation to skiing and ski mountaineering. 4 Apply instructional risk management in relation to skiing and ski mountaineering. Students must have completed SL3, AML, ML(W) and AAC qualifications. 6 Pre-Course Qualifications Student must be an Offr or an NCO. Personnel of lower rank may be considered but such applications must be justified by the individual's reporting Offr. Completed a minimum of 10 days ski touring after completion of the SL3. A comprehensive mountaineering logbook is required to be approved by the CI of the T4 Centre. Conditions/Remit (Operating as May ski worldwide as a party of 3 within their own skill set and experience. 10 Equals) May lead a group of up to 5 students on glacial non-technical ground and 11 Remit (Led Groups) 2 students on technical ground in sync with current recognised guiding ratios, worldwide within experience and ability. 12 Remit (Distributed Training) Nil. 14 Currency Students are required to maintain a skiing and mountaineering log book. 19 Location T4 Centres run 10 day courses.
