Please send us an outline of your experience, skills or training, including your test results if you have done the NZ online course Advanced skiing skills. Your skiing skills should be strong. Alpine and telemark skiers can apply and attend the course. All skiers should be comfortable in a variety of terrain. Both Alpine and those using telemark skis must demonstrate the following: a. Execute alpine skiing techniques and parallel turns in off-piste conditions. b. Perform linked parallel turns through the fall line in off-piste terrain. 3. Apply speed control using turn shape that is adapted for snow conditions and terrain. You should be a competent skier in a variety of terrain, including on and off piste, in snow conditions that may vary from deep fresh snow to hard firm surfaces. You should have strong speed control skills and be able to assess snow surface for appropriate technique to be used. If telemarking, you should have a variable technique that you can apply in different terrain situations. Alpine skiers should be able to apply neat parallel turns in a variety of conditions and terrain. Please contact us if you are unsure of your ski skill level. This will be assessed via RPL and you should have evidence of at least 10 days of ski touring in an uncontrolled winter environment (Log book.) Equipment: We will send you trip preparation material, which will include a gear list, but briefly, you must use either Alpine Touring (AT) or Telemark equipment. We have a range of AT and tele gear available for hire in our shop in Furano if required. The course would not suit people using resort skis. Snowboarders: The course does not cover snowboard guiding and does not include snowboard guiding units. Course Facilitator John Morrell The course trainer will be John Morrell. John has been a professional ski guide for over thirty years in both Australia and Japan and has skied and toured on the Haute Route in Europe and to the glaciers and peaks of Denali National Park in Alaska. John is also an accredited ski instructor (Current TAFE Previously APSI), has done extensive wilderness first aid courses and the ski patrol medical training and is a qualified ski guide and trainer. He is a pioneer ski guide in central Hokkaido and his extensive experience in central Hokkaido and Australia and his knowledge of the finer arts of ski guiding ensure you of the very best training on this course. Other trainers depending on demand may assist John. Course Patron Tim Macartney-Snape John Morrell is the pioneer of backcountry guiding in Hokkaido, when I first skied with him there in 1987 he was already very knowledgeable. He is the consummate guide, an excellent instructor, teacher and a superb skier. There is no one more qualified than John to run an Australia Japan Ski Guides course. I am more than happy to endorse and oversight this course. Tim Macartney- Snape, Twice Everest Summiteer, Mountain and Ski Guide, director of Sea to Summit outdoor gear and Black Diamond Equipment representative in Australia. Alpine Ski Guides Course Page 3

6 & Resort Ski Hire - Resort, Telemark & Alpine Touring - Why Hire? Hokkaido offers some of the best, if not the best, most consistent powder snow skiing in the world. To make the most of this superb skiing, we recommend you use modern "fat" powder skis. The advantages of fat skis for powder snow are manifold, but high amongst them is this. The learning curve is shorter. They offer better balance, flotation and stability than narrow skis, allowing you to relax and ski at a higher level. Excess Baggage Another great advantage in hiring with us is that you will save the hassle of carrying your skis, and also any excess baggage costs. Resort & Our full ski hire range will cater for your needs, whether you are a telemarker, AT skier, resort skier or boarder. We also have a good range of reosrt carve skis for those days when you are just cruising the groomers. Free Ski Exchange Our convenient location, just 100 m from the main Kittanomine Gondola at the Furano ski resort allows us to offer an exchange service. Once you have hired with us you can swap and try the latest fat skis or powder boards or change to the carve skis whenever you like, depending on snow conditons. (and on what skis are available). Three Convenient Locations 1. Furano (Alpine Rental), 2. Niseko (Harro's Snowsports) & 3. Asahi Dake (Shirakabaso YHA). We offer a drop off and pick up service at Furano, Niseko and Asahi Dake. This saves you changing your ski hire when skiing in different Hokkaido locations. Contact us for details. Pre Booking and Delivery Prebook your ski hire and we will have it ready for you on arrival in Furano or any of the other central Hokkaido ski destinations. If on one of tours we will have the ski hire ready for your first day with us and if doing your own tour we can arrange delivery to your first destination. We offer a delivery service to any of the main Hokkaido ski areas, including: Asahikawa, Kamui, Asahi Dake, Sounkyo, Tokachi, Niseko and Tomamu. For hires of five or more days we will include the delivery fee. (Three days notice is required and boots size request must be accurate.) Telemark and Alpine Touring Telemark skis, resort and powder.
