1 University of Utah College Credit Information Since 1980 NOLS and the University of Utah have partnered to offer college credit to NOLS students. This credit is administered by the University s Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (PRT), one of the few fully accredited programs of its type west of the Mississippi. Additionally, some NOLS courses offer credit through the University s Biology Department. Registration and payment is required before your NOLS course begins. If you d like to earn college credit please complete and return the attached Registration Form, with payment of $70.00 per credit hour, payable to NOLS at least 10 days prior to your course start date. The optional college credit fees are in addition to the course tuition. Registration forms submitted after the course will not be accepted. There is no exception to this guideline. Receiving Credit Complete the following steps at least ten days prior to your course start date: 1) Complete and return the University of Utah College Credit Registration Form to NOLS. (This registration is on pages 5 and 6 of this form, or may be found online under our academic credit link: 2) Submit payment of $70.00 per credit hour payable to NOLS. (NOTE: The cost per credit is subject to change approximately every two years.) Abbreviated descriptions of University of Utah courses offered through NOLS can be found on page 3 of this form or < on the University of Utah College Credit page on the NOLS website. Requesting your University of Utah Transcripts To receive an official transcript, or have one sent to your school, you must make a request directly to the University of Utah. Transcripts are not available until after the close of the term in which your course occurs. Please refer to the chart below. You ll find the instructions to request your transcript online here: NOLS Course Start Date Transcript Availability Date December 29 March 31 July 1 April 1 August 15 September 30 August 16 December 28 February 10 Requests for early report of grades will only be accommodated if they are made in advance of your course start date. Please contact the NOLS registrar at [email protected] with any requests or questions. Schools Accepting Credit Many colleges and universities will accept the transfer of the University of Utah credit available for a NOLS course. A list of schools that NOLS has pre-arranged agreements with is available online at: Other schools make decisions regarding credit transfer on an individual basis. It is the student s responsibility to arrange for the transfer of credit. Students are encouraged to make these arrangements prior to taking a NOLS course; this can prevent disappointment later. 1
2 Eligibility High school graduates or the equivalent may register for University of Utah college credit. Current high school students must have completed their junior year with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above, and must submit an official transcript with their registration form to verify their status. The other 20% of the grade is based on a specific paper, written post-course, and graded by a professor at the University of Utah. Papers are generally APA format, 10 pages long, and are expected to meet entry-level graduate student writing standards. Indicate on page 5 of the registration form that you are pursuing graduate credit, include your address and detailed information will be sent to you. Students who separate from their NOLS course while in progress may be awarded college credit based on the duration and quality of their participation. Credit for separated students is awarded at the discretion of the NOLS branch staff and instructors. The expense for any college credit not awarded to a separated student will be refunded, minus a $25 processing fee. University of Utah Information The University of Utah and the National Outdoor Leadership School are entirely separate entities, and no agency or employee relationship exists between them.
