3 DISABLED SKIERS NOTE: Disabled skiers must be able to teach their own disability function, but must also be able to teach, detect and correct all the skiing functions. To demonstrate these other functions another demonstrator can be used. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST ATTEND ALL SESSIONS. DIFFERENT WAYS OF RUNNING CLINICS: 1. Specialized disabilities (Basic skiing and body contact tools should be used in all clinics) 2. NO SNOW! Use indoor facility. Use floor to go through normal procedures minus skis and boots, walking through maneuvers. 3. Dryland: Outside use a slope if possible. Practicum can be done dryland e.g. Blind going through practical experiences of putting on boots, skis and walking etc. MAKE UP OF CLASSES: Class 1 Level 2 and up CSIA and Experienced Instructors of Disabled Skiing. Class 2 Professional personnel in medical field. Class 3 Good skiers and Level 1. Class 4 Others (including non skiers, volunteers) keep volunteers involved. WORK TO THE LEVEL OF CLASS Class 1 Work on more detailed skiing and disabilities. Class 2 Work on teaching and skiing maneuvers, as they understand disabilities. Class 3 Work on teaching and skiing maneuvers and disabilities. Class 4 Break down to very basic skiing (these people are very important in many areas - Do not discourage anyone from helping. INSTRUCTORS SHOULD BE AWARE OF: 1. Know your own capabilities a) Skiing b) Teaching c) Knowledge of disabilities d) Knowledge of yourself patience, panic level etc. 2. When in doubt work slowly and safely work on basics 3. If you feel you can not handle student a) Discuss situation with program co-ordinator b) Switch students for awhile or permanently c) Go in for a coffee d) Ask for feedback from student to see what he/she is learning 4. Keep a personnel record of lessons (problems, gains etc.) and refer to them when similar situations arise. 5. If you panic (anyone can), best to change student.

4 Many students challenge their instructors; so don t feel bad if you take on more than you bargained for. Do something about it before you or your student has an accident. WHAT SKIING DOES FOR THE DISABLED: 1. A form of healthy outdoor exercise 2. Integration into normal society 3. Social 4. Family sport 5. Fluid mobility because motion is given to them by the slope of the hill. You don t need to be able to walk to ski. Try to get families involved in skiing encourage lessons. Always know your student s name. DISABLED AND SKI AREA: Program co-ordinators should know procedures at ski area and pass them onto the instructors and disabled students. If you do not know policies e.g. lift lines, blind bibs, stopping lifts etc., check before going out. Always be diplomatic. Most areas are willing to help the disabled, but don t take advantage of your privileges. ITEMS TO CHECK ON: CLOTHING: BRACES: NO FEELING AMPUTEES GOGGLES & SUN GLASSES Mitts, hat, scarf, adequate ski clothing Pad under braces well, as braces will conduct cold and rub skin. Some people may have no feeling or very poor circulation, check Them often. Watch for frostbite. Pad stumps and if wearing prosthesis, check often. To prevent injury to stump use cardboard or professionally made protectors. Are important when sunny. Best to train student to wear them at all times. A MUST FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED. ON HILL SESSION: 1. Basic Skiing: This is very important. All advanced techniques stem from the basics. (It is hard to teach if you don t understand the basics) EMPHASIZE: a) Demonstrations b) Running through maneuvers c) Brief explanations d) Detection and correction of mistakes e) Mileage on skis (you learn by skiing, not by standing around)

5 2. Body Contact Tools: To be used when needed. This is another form of correction and They are confidence builders for the student. (Refer to CADS manual) a) Long pole b) Short pole c) Holding ski tips d) Rope harness e) Turning person on hill f) Pushing on flats or traverse g) Skiing backwards holding ski tips, body, hands or poles h) Picking someone up after a fall i) Holding body, hips, back, arms j) Holding person between legs (front or back) FIRST AID: Practicum is important in this section. Have students pair up and run through most of these. Some of these may have been included in basic skiing. Emphasize again Every ski area has ski patrol and some have a resident doctor. 1. Know where first aid station is located 2. Check with station for procedures 3. Taking a first aid course is beneficial 4. Don t panic - accidents do happen 5. Tell the ski patrol when you are in their area 6. Invite them to your sessions to observe First aid and your student: Program co-ordinator should have the following information: a) Phone number of parents, spouse etc. b) Phone number of doctor c) Phone number of hospital d) Detailed description of disability and medication (look for people that bruise easily, they could have internal bleeding) ITEMS TO CARRY WITH YOU ON THE HILL: 1. C clamps and nylon rope 2. Tape (adhesive, fibre glass) and knife 3. Bolts or spring clips tools (screw driver, wrenches, pliers) These items help the instructor WORKING WITH THE DISABLED: Adjust your teaching to the ability not the disability.

6 CERTIFICATION COURSE ORGANIZATION Plan for Course as early in fall as possible. (DIVISION) 1) Contact Ski Area for: - Available Dates - Arrange for Lift Tickets costs restrictions - Availability of lunch services - Meeting rooms - Over night storage for skis and equipment 2) Contact CADS National Office for: - Audio/Visual aids - Manuals - All forms - cards etc. 3) Arrange for Accommodation costs - Travel to ski area - Meals 4) Prepare Budget see budget sheet 5) Arrange for special equipment outriggers, teaching aids etc. 6) Arrange for Course Co-ordinator to attend and have them arrange - Chief Examiner - Other Examiners 7) Advertise Course - Set deadlines for application forms to be received by organizer s office 8) Check student requirements 9) Check that each student is a current member of CADS and if not collect appropriate division dues.

7 CERTIFICATION COURSE ORGANIZATION CHECKLIST Plan for each course as early as possible through your division*. * 30 Days Minimum to activate Insurance Coverage Course Coordinators must confirm the following steps are completed: 1) Prepare Budget see budget sheet and account for your course expenses 2) Contact Ski Area for: Available Dates Arrange for Lift Tickets costs restrictions Over night storage for skis and equipment Availability of lunch Meeting rooms 3) SEND Request for Certification Course form to National office a minimum 30 days* prior to course date 4) Advertise course through local, division and national channels as early as possible Set deadline (minimum 14 days**) for participants to have certification application forms completed and returned to you, the course coordinator ** Deadline must be set a minimum of 14 days prior to course so that all course participant s names and addresses can be forwarded to national office to confirm that they are on file as a current member of CADS and that all course requirements have been fulfilled by each applicant 5) Confirm that each participant has fulfilled all course requirements and have all corresponding signatures prior to forwarding participant names and addresses to national office and that each student is a current member of CADS. If participant is not a current member collect appropriate division dues. 6) Forward the names and addresses of all participants to national office a minimum of 14 days** prior to course date. 7) Contact CADS National Office as early as possible for: Confirmation that you have the latest version of certification kit and all related forms CADS Instructor Manuals or electronic manual file to print your own Request blue certification cards if it is a level one course (one for each participant) 8) Arrange for Examiners and confirm: Their attendance Travel expense to and from ski area Accommodations if required Daily meal allowance and lift tickets 9) Arrange for / confirm availability of special equipment outriggers, teaching aids etc. 10) Contact each participant prior to course to confirm: The course date, their attendance and course structure & times, That they are to bring their current national membership card, and blue certification card (if course is a Level II or higher) The course fees and payment (if not prepaid) 11) Forward list of course participants and their application forms to the Chief Examiner. 12) Confirm with Chief Examiner that all required forms and materials have been forwarded to National office within 10 days after the completion of the course. (See list on Page 7)

9 ALPINE CERTIFICATION Certification criteria for Alpine Instructors has been established by the Alpine Technical Committee in respect to norms defined in the CADS Certification Kit. CADS Level 1 - Instructor Participation in an Instructor Training Clinic as defined in the CADS Certification Kit, including the indoor session, CSIA Progression Clinic and Clinics covering 3 Track, 4 Track, Blind, Sitski the use of specialized equipment and passed open book exam. CADS Level 2 - Instructor The individual who has taken the course and passed all requirements of the CADS Level 2 Certification, including teaching exam and four mandatory Ski-Offs as defined in the CADS Certification Kit, shall be classed as a Certified CADS Level 2 Instructor. CADS Level 2a - Instructor Two situations are considered to attain Certification as a Sitski Instructor. The requirements are fully covered in the Certification Kit and include both situations. A- Able bodied Instructor: Must be a Certified CADS Level 2 Instructor and teach Sitskiing for a minimum of one season after attaining a CADS Level 2 certification. The candidate must demonstrate and pass the Sitski Ski-Off as a defined in the Certification Kit. Upon passing the Ski-Off the candidate s Certification Card shall be signed to indicate the additional qualification. B- Person with a disability: A person with a disability who normally skis in a Sitski can have the opportunity to be tested in the Sitski phase, or all phases of testing for the CADS Certification. A person who has passed one or more Ski-Offs shall have the appropriate section completed on the CADS Certification Card. CADS Level 3 - Examiner A candidate, whose application has been accepted to become an Examiner will be designated as a Rookie Examiner until such time as all the requirements, including Sitski certification, to become an Examiner, as defined in the CADS Policy Manual, has been fulfilled.

10 CADS Level 4 - Senior Examiner To fulfil the requirements for this position the candidate must have had considerable experience as a Ski Instructor, examining Instructors and fulfils the requirements for this position as defined in the CADS policy Manual. Certification Card: The Certification Card shall have a section on the back of the card to Certification levels attained. CSIA/CASI Certification: A CSIA/CASI Certification is not a requirement to take a CADS Certification. A candidate for CADS Level 1 Certification requires 6 hours Instruction in CSIA/CASI Teaching Methodology. This instruction may be a combination of the original training course and clinics over a period of time. A candidate for CADS Level 2 Certification requires 18 hours Instruction in CSIA/CASI Teaching Methodology. This instruction may be a combination of the original training course and clinics over a period of time. If the candidate has a CSIA/CASI Certification (Level I - IV) then he/she has met the CSIA/CASI requirements for CADS Certification.

CADS LEVEL 1 INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE EXAM REQUIREMENTS Open Book as set by Technical Committee.

CADS LEVEL 2 INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE TEACHING EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS The teaching exam is done on snow and will consist of: 1 Teaching on: Visually Impaired Function 1 3 Track Function 3 4 Track Function 4 2 There will be 1 teaching exam. 3 There may be more than 1 examiner at each session

13 4 Examiners are looking for your Ability to communicate ideas and teaching criteria from your training experiences or knowledge gained by reading CSIA and CADS Methodology manuals. 5 The mark will be Pass or Fail and not a number grade CADS LEVEL 2 INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE SKI OFF REQUIREMENTS 1 BASIC CHANGE OF DIRECTION (3 Track shallow terrain slow speed) SKILLS: Forward Side Slip linked with unweighting a) Balance (stance): Fore and Aft, Vertical b) Pivot : The ability to rotate the foot and ski under the body c) Pressure Control : Hop or unweighting to show the skill of Pivot and through forward slip. Show the ability to hold foot/ski turned across line of travel d) Edging : The ability to maintain balance and a line of travel and speed control. 2 BASIC PARALLEL ( 4 Track no leg motion upper body rotation slow speed) SKILLS : Balance (stance) : Pivot : Pressure control : Edging a) Balance (stance) : - same as in #1 b) Pivot : Ability to rotate upper body and stay in balance c) Pressure control: No unweighting d) Edging: Showing an amount of arc to the turn through increase in edging with upper body and / or hip. Round skidded arc, small degree of edge. e) Power from rotation. 3 PARALLEL CHRISTIE (with edge control own equipment) SKILLS : Balance (stance) : Pivot : Pressure control : Edging a) Balance (stance) : - same as in #1 b) Pivot : Less pivot. Work the ski more through arc c) Pressure control : Ability to deal with pressure buildup from edging skill d) Edging : With the ability to increase edge we must deal with pressure by flexing or extending. Main skills Pressure control and edging. 4 FREE SKI ( Own equipment) Terrain : Intermediate type, smooth small bumps SKILLS : All skills required. The ability to control speed through different radius of turns and adaptability to changing terrain. NOTE: Skiers with a Disability who cannot change equipment must ski each run on their own equipment.

14 CADS LEVEL 2 INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE FOR SNOWBOARDERS - RIDING REQUIREMENTS 1 BASIC CHANGE OF DIRECTION (shallow terrain slow speed) - outriggers optional SKILLS: Linked forward Side Slip with un-weighting a) Stance & Balance: Fore & aft centered between the bindings. b) Pivoting: The ability to rotate the feet and board. Lead with the shoulder in the direction of the turn. c) Pressure Control: Demonstrate the skill of un-weighting while pivoting d) Edging: The ability to balance on the edge and maintain a straight line of travel with a skidded track. Maintain speed. 2 BASIC TURNS (limited use of lower body shallow terrain slow speed) - outriggers required SKILLS: Linked turns with limited leg motion a) Stance & Balance: Fore & aft centered between the bindings. b) Pivoting: The ability to rotate the feet and board by rotating the upper body. Lead with the shoulder in the direction of the turn. c) Edging: Round, skidded arc with a flat board (minimal edge). Increase edge angle as required by bending at the hip (limited use of ankle/knee). d) Pressure Control: No un-weighting or hopping with the legs. 3 NOVICE TURNS (linked turns with edge control - smooth, beginner/intermediate terrain own equipment) SKILLS: Linked turns with edge control a) Stance & Balance: Fore & aft centered between the bindings. Equal bend in the ankle/knee/hip. Level shoulders. One hand in front, one behind. b) Pivoting: Lead the turn with the shoulder. c) Edging: Demonstrate the ability to increase edge angle using ankle/knee/hip. d) Pressure Control: Use of extension to initiate each turn. Use of flexion to control pressure build-up due to edging. e) Timing & Coordination: Rhythmical, linked turns. Medium/large radius. 4 FREE RUN (own equipment - intermediate terrain, smooth small bumps) SKILLS: All skills required. Demonstrate advanced riding. Demonstrate the ability to control speed through different radius of turn and the ability to adapt to changing terrain. Demonstrate a change of rhythm

CADS LEVEL 2a INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION COURSE TEACHING EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS Candidates must have a working knowledge in all types of sit skis and their tethering operation. The teaching exam is done on snow and will consist of: 1 Teaching on: Monoski Biski Quadski Tethering 2 There will be 1 teaching exam. 3 There may be more than 1 examiner at each session 4 Examiners are looking for your Ability to communicate ideas and teaching criteria from your training experiences or knowledge gained by reading CSIA and CADS Methodology manuals.

Basic Change of Directions a) Blue/Green Slope b) Slow to medium speed c) Linked turns 1 MONOSKI (Gentle Blue/Green Terrain Groomed smooth) SKILLS a) Balance fore, aft and lateral b) Pivot ability to rotate the ski to a new direction using rotation c) Edging ability to control roundness of turn through angulation d) Speed control 2 BI SKI (Blue/Green Terrain Groomed smooth) SKILLS a) Balance ability to change direction TIP FLAT TIP b) Edging round arcs control speed c) Pressure Control fore and aft movement to stay in balance with turn d) Tetherer 3 QUAD SKI (Blue/Green Terrain - Groomed smooth) SKILLS a) Balance maybe weight only most work done by tetherer b) Edging change of edge or direction using tethers c) Pressure Control using tethers Control of turn shape, size, speed
