2 About NOCCA As Louisiana s arts conservatory for high school students, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) provides professional arts training to talented Louisiana students in Classical Instrumental Music, Creative Writing, Culinary Arts, Dance, Drama, Jazz, Media Arts: Filmmaking & Audio Production, Musical Theatre, Theatre Design, Visual Arts, Vocal Music and academics. Attendance options include full-day, half-day, afterschool and Summer. A successful NOCCA student is expected to maintain a professional level of commitment to training and progress. NOCCA s rules, procedures and grading system mirror those of the professional arts world, so that students receive rewards and setbacks at NOCCA based on the same criteria they would face in an arts career. NOCCA is tuition-free, but students are required to pay a Student Fee to cover supply costs. What Am I Eligible To Apply & Audition For? 3 How Do I Apply To NOCCA? REQUIREMENTS 1. You must be a resident of the State of Louisiana and enrolled in a middle or high school program (public, private, parochial, charter or state approved homeschool). A student currently in 5-7th grade may apply for Middle School Preparatory. A student currently in the 7th grade may apply for Arts Workshop. A student currently in the 8th grade may apply for the Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction and/or the Academic Studio (separate application). Only current 8th grade students may apply for the Academic Studio. A student currently in 9-11th grade may apply for the High School Arts Programs and/or Summer Conservatory. 2. You must have a 2.0 (C) overall grade point average from your present school. 3. Applicants may only apply for one arts discipline. Students wishing to apply for more than one arts discipline must include an appeal letter/written statement with their second application addressing the reasons of the request. Because of the intensity of the application and audition process, NOCCA recommends students to apply for one arts discipline. Families are encouraged to attend Open Studios and Audition Workshops to help them decide which arts discipline their student is most passionate. 4. Completely fill out the front and back of the Student Information Form (Part A). Ask a parent or guardian to sign it. 5. Ask one (1) adult who knows your talent to fill out the Recommendation Form (Part B), and return the completed form to you in a sealed envelope with their signature across the seal. Faculty and staff may ask students to provide additional recommendations if needed. 6. Attach your most recent report card to your application with a completed Part C. Faculty and staff may ask students to provide additional academic reports and documentation if needed. 7. A complete application must be received no later than Monday, January 30, A complete application includes: the Student Information Form (Part A), one (1) Recommendation Form (Part B), your Academic Report (Part C) and additional required discipline materials specifically listed in the application guidelines. Applications will not be processed until all forms are received (Part A, 1 Part B, Part C, and discipline materials). FAXED COPIES OF THE APPLICATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. In order to expedite the scheduling of your audition, please submit all parts of the application together. 8. You will be scheduled for a specific audition date and time. Cancelled or missed auditions will not be rescheduled. Study the audition requirements for your arts discipline and prepare for your scheduled audition. Arrive early for your scheduled audition, appropriately dressed, and make sure to bring all required materials.
4 Audition Requirements CREATIVE WRITING (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction) Because of the academic nature of the creative writing program, successful students usually have high reading scores on standardized tests (85 percent or above), high grade-point averages (3.0 or above), and demonstrate superior reading comprehension. Include with your completed application: (1) An original work of creative writing. This can be a poem or short story that you have spent time revising, and that you consider to be an example of your best work. (2) A list of books you have read over the past three months. The list should include the title and author of each book. (3) A creative work (poem or short story) that describes what you see outside a window in your house. Please include sensory details (how things look, smell, taste, sound, or feel) and at least one simile or metaphor. Limit: 10 lines of poetry or 100 words of fiction. (4) An essay discussing a poem, short story or novel you read that influenced you as a writer. Please tell us how this work/author changed the way you think about writing, and use quotes and examples from the text to support your ideas. The essay should be between 300 and 500 words. All writing submissions should be typed using a standard 12-point font and black ink. Please proofread your submissions to ensure that they are free from grammatical and spelling errors. Selected students will be asked to advance to the Audition Process. At the audition, (1) Selected students will be asked to submit an additional writing portfolio consisting of 10 pages of original creative writing (poetry or short fiction). (2) Selected students will then be asked to come to NOCCA for an interview/audition. At the audition, students should demonstrate a strong desire to read and write, and a willingness to do more than the work required. Students may be asked to write a short piece assigned by the instructor and/or read aloud and discuss a published poem or story excerpt. All students invited to an audition should be prepared for a one-on-one interview with a faculty member. Consider these questions prior to your audition date: Why do you want to study writing? Are you willing to spend many hours outside of class on your reading and writing? What do you need to know about NOCCA and the writing program in order to determine if it s the right fit for you? CULINARY ARTS (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction) Include with your completed application: (1) An essay describing your ambitions in culinary arts in no more than 200 words (approximately two pages if handwritten, one page if typed). Discuss your choice for a possible career in culinary arts and why you think you would excel in this field. List at least three reasons why you should be enrolled as a student in the NOCCA Culinary Arts Studio. (2) A written or typed resume/list of your experiences in culinary arts (i.e.: restaurant or kitchen experience) and information that conveys your enthusiasm and dedication. At the audition, (1) You may be scheduled for an interview with the chef instructor who will ask you a series of questions about your experiences, expertise and commitment. Prepare to discuss your interest in culinary arts, what or who inspires you and any experience or training. A second interview may be required. (2) Be prepared to be involved in an individual or group practical exam which may include, but not be limited to, safety and sanitation, knife skills, basic cooking techniques, written or oral testing, and food product identification. (3) Be prepared to get creative and provide menu or product ideas for thematic events.
5 DANCE & DANCE PREP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Middle School Preparatory) At the audition, (1) You will be assessed on your acquired skills in all areas of dance and personal fitness for dance; (2) You must have the knowledge and ability to execute dance terminology in ballet, modern, jazz, and perform two out of the three with strength; (3) Come dressed in dance clothes (girls: black leotards, pink tights; boys: black tights, white T-shirt). You must bring ballet and jazz shoes. *No Jazz sneakers. Those not appropriately dressed or arriving late will not be allowed to audition. No jewelry can be worn into the audition; (4) You will take a class in ballet, jazz and modern. The class will start with a ballet barre followed by center and adagio, a quick jazz warm-up followed by across-the-floor combinations and a center combination, and then a modern class with across-the-floors and a center variation. You will be judged upon your demonstration of the following skills: mental ability; energy level within the classes; flexibility of back, legs and hip sockets; feet and foot articulation; musicality and phrasing; rhythmic accuracy; quick recall of combinations; presence and carriage and ability to perform given combinations with style and grace; (5) Do not prepare choreography for this audition. You will take instructions from NOCCA dance faculty. MEDIA ARTS: FILMMAKING & AUDIO PRODUCTION (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction) At the audition, (1) Present a sample of your work (portfolio) in film, video, audio recording, motion graphics or animation. Include a short statement that describes the work: Did you do this for a class project? What did you intend? What equipment did you use? If the work is a collaboration, state exactly what role you served in the production. Specifically describe your creative role. If you do not have portfolio material as described above you can submit one of the following: A storyboard with text and visual instructions for a short film, video, or animation. Simple sketches are sufficient. A series of photographs that tell a story (at least 15). A detailed critique of the sound/music and visual elements of a feature film or television production that discusses the atmosphere, emotional content and overall effect of these elements. A short screenplay (no more than 10 pages) (2) Present an essay describing your ambitions in film, video, audio recording or digital media in no more than 200 words (approximately two pages if handwritten, one page if typed). Discuss your choice for a possible career in one of these fields and why you think you are qualified; (3) Be prepared to answer a series of questions about your portfolio, expertise, favorite film, video and television production, music album or animation. (Avoid discussing your personal likes and dislikes. Describe the work s content, effectiveness and how the director achieved it.); (4) Present a written or typed list of your experiences in media arts (film, video, audio recording, digital arts). Include past work in productions, clubs, awards and other information that conveys your experience and enthusiasm. MUSIC: CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTAL & CLASSICAL PREP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Middle School Preparatory) At the audition, Piano majors: (1) Demonstrate all major and minor scales and arpeggios in 4 octaves; (2) Perform one composition by Bach from memory (you may choose from 2 part and 3 part inventions, movements from suites or partitas, or any prelude and fugue from Well-Tempered Clavier); (3) Perform one or two movements from a classical sonata or sonatina from memory; (4) Demonstrate at least rudimentary skills in sight reading music. Other instruments: (1) Demonstrate all major and minor scales and arpeggios; (2) Perform two contrasting pieces from memory; (3) Demonstrate at least rudimentary skills in sight reading music.
6 MUSIC: JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction) At the audition, (1) Sight-read basic melodies and rhythms; (2) Match pitches by ear; (3) Improvise with piano accompaniment without prior preparation; (4) Perform a prepared jazz piece from memory; (5) Perform the major scale in all twelve keys; (6) Demonstrate knowledge of all major and minor key signatures; (7) Complete a music theory placement test. MUSIC: VOCAL & VOCAL PREP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Middle School Preparatory) At the audition, (1) Demonstrate a singing voice with professional potential by singing one prepared and memorized song from any of the 24 Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th Centuries (G.Schirmer) such as Caro mio ben, Sebben crudele or one of these English songs: Danny Boy, Drink to me only with thine eyes. NO OTHER SONGS OR UNACCOMPANIED SINGING WILL BE ACCEPTED; (2) Bring appropriate sheet music accompaniment in the key for your voice type for the piano accompanist provided at the audition; YOU MUST BRING WITH YOU PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT SHEET MUSIC AND IT MUST BE IN THE CORRECT KEY. (3) Demonstrate the ability to match and select pitches and sing a major scale in tune; (4) Perform sight-reading skills and be able to repeat back with accuracy simple rhythmic or melodic sequences; (5) Demonstrate reading ability by reading unfamiliar English words of a given song; (6) Be able to discuss your grades and express a strong desire to explore vocal music; (7) Complete a placement test in music theory. THEATRE ARTS: DRAMA & DRAMA WORKSHOP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Arts Workshop) At the audition, (1) Present a written or typed list of your resume/ training and experiences in performance/ acting and a photograph of your head and shoulders (school photos accepted). (2) You will be asked to participate in movement and vocal exercises (appropriate dress required such as gym shoes, gym clothes, tights); (3) Perform a memorized selection provided by the Theatre Department (visit for the list of acceptable choices/no ORIGINAL SPEECHES OR POEMS) and be familiar with the play from which the monologue was taken; (4) Respond spontaneously in directed improvisational exercises; (5) Read an unfamiliar text out loud with clarity of speech and understanding of meaning; (6) Be given a reading and successfully complete a writing exercise. (7) Read Tennessee Williams Glass Menagerie, you will be asked to take a short test and provide a synopsis on the play. THEATRE ARTS: MUSICAL THEATRE, MUSICAL THEATRE PREP, & MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Middle School Preparatory, Arts Workshop) At the audition, (1) Present a written or typed list of your training and experiences in performance/acting and a photograph of your head and shoulders (school photos accepted). (2) You will recite from memory a contemporary monologue of your choice from a play or Broadway show. Be prepared to summarize both the plot of the play from which the monologue is taken, and the situation of the character; (3) Respond spontaneously in directed improvisational exercises; (4) Read aloud selections given at the audition (tongue twister, etc.) with clarity of speech and understanding of meaning; (5) You will be taught a Musical Theatre Style Dance on-site by a NOCCA faculty member. You will have to perform this combination to the best of your ability at the audition. Dress in clothing that allows you to move; (6) You will perform: vocal exercises taught at the audition that demonstrate your understanding of pitch, tempo, rhythm, and harmony AND one memorized song (a musical theatre standard of your choice). A pianist will accompany you at the audition. Be prepared to summarize both the story of the musical from which the song is taken and the situation of the character singing the song. YOU MUST BRING WITH YOU PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT SHEET MUSIC AND IT MUST BE IN THE CORRECT KEY.
7 THEATRE ARTS: THEATRE DESIGN & THEATRE DESIGN WORKSHOP (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction, Arts Workshop) At the audition, (1) Present a written or typed list of your training and experiences in theatre tech, performances, backstage work and theatre design; (2) Submit a sample of work (portfolio) in theatre design and technical crew work (design renderings, paperwork, photos of the completed design, crew sheets, program credits). Please be specific and give exact descriptions of the actual work completed by labeling the named examples. You may submit an example of a practice design of sets, costumes and/or lighting for a generally recognized play, such as a classic Greek tragedy, Broadway musical or opera. Potential students do not need to be visual artists; simple sketches are sufficient. VISUAL ARTS (High School Summer Conservatory, High School Arts Instruction) Drawing Samples: Include with your completed application two drawings: one technical drawing and one personal expression drawing. Both drawings should be drawn in pencil on 8 1/2 by 11 white paper. The technical drawing should be drawn directly from observation. Its subject matter can be either: A) pair of tennis shoes/boots; or B) an arrangement of kitchen tools/utensils. The personal expression drawing can be your choice of subject matter. In both drawings, be sure to use the entire page, consider composition and use full range of value. Drawings submitted with the application will not be returned. Selected students will be asked to advance to the Audition Process. Audition Process: Portfolio Review: Selected students will be asked to present a portfolio of carefully chosen examples of work during Portfolio Review Week. This is separate from the student s scheduled audition day and time. Students will be notified of a portfolio drop-off day at NOCCA. Students should submit outstanding original work that demonstrates commitment of time and self. Consider quality before quantity; 8-15 pieces are typical. Include a variety of media, including work in color. All work should fit into a large portfolio or envelope with your name, address and phone number labeled on the outside. Do not submit framed pieces or works on canvas. Sculptural work may be included but should be represented by a photograph or slide. Do not send the actual sculptural work. Portfolios will be returned to students at the end of the audition. The remaining portfolios cannot be stored and will be discarded. Drawing From Observation: You will be required to produce a drawing during the audition. Interview: Faculty members will talk with you while reviewing your portfolio, drawings and reading ability, and evaluating academic strengths.
