2 Our commitment to service drives us Barry Nelson President & CEO Pat Moreno Board Chair October is a special time for the credit union movement. Since 1948, the third Thursday of this month has been recognized as International Credit Union Day. It s a time to reflect on those people, both past and present, who had roles in the credit union movement around the world. Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, our former president and CEO who retired in August, was a significant contributor to both the credit union movement and our local community. This year s International Credit Union Day theme is "Local Service. Global Good." This sentiment rings true at Travis Credit Union, where our managers and employees are committed to member and community service. All of our efforts are dedicated to improving the financial wellbeing of our members and the communities we serve. This starts with our volunteer directors, who are led by board chair Pat Moreno. Their work throughout the year helps guide the credit union s continuing focus on service and financial stability. In this issue of Smart Money Matters you ll learn about the upcoming board and supervisory committee elections that are held at our annual meeting in April. These meetings give you a chance to participate in the governance of the credit union. The ways we serve our members and communities Over the next two months we re holding two seminars; one for women about money management and another about the psychology behind spending. These are just a few of the financial education programs and services offered throughout the year. Others include real estate, retirement and credit-building seminars. We support youth through a popular series of Mad City Money teen financial education workshops that just ended this summer and our scholarship program for younger members that begins accepting applications in January. We also sponsor a Cal-Grant presentation for area youths and the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento that benefits the Children s Miracle Network hospitals. Our branch teams are actively involved in local events and hold year-round canned food drives. Next month, we ll begin our annual holiday stocking drive at our branches to raise funds for Children s Miracle Network hospitals. Throughout the fall we also hold several internal holiday fund-raising activities for charity. Training and technology Our dedication to service gets reaffirmed each October when all Travis Credit Union employees gather for a day of training. The event is filled with presentations, discussions, team-building and fun all intended to recharge and rededicate ourselves toward helping you. Another way we constantly improve our service is by embracing new technology that makes it easier and more efficient for you to do business with us. Watch for more details about these changes in upcoming newsletters and other communications. This is a very exciting time for Travis Credit Union and I m thankful for your membership and support. 3 64th Annual Meeting and Election Notice Elections will be held Thursday, April 30, 2015, for the Board of Directors and the Supervisory Committee at Travis Credit Union. There are three board of director positions and one supervisor committee positions up for election to three-year terms. If you wish to stand for election, please mail your resume and cover letter expressing interest in either the Board or Supervisory Committee to the Nominating Committee at the address below. You may bypass the nomination process and become a candidate by submitting a petition signed by 100 members who are eligible to vote in the election. A July survey among 1,500 home owners by realtor.com showed that 67 percent were planning home improvement projects this year, and that they plan to spend more money doing so than last year. 8 In the Community Here are some of the events our employees participated in over the past few months. $ Travis Credit Union employees actively support the people and communities we serve through an investment of financial resources and human capital. We re also engaged in the credit union industry, promoting the mission of "People Helping People." Cinco De Mayo Parade Travis Credit Union was a proud participant in the Cinco De Mayo Parade in Richmond on May 3. We re proud to support our communities. Annual Blood Drive Travis Credit Union employees generously donated during our Blood Drive on July 2. The Bloodsource Bloodmobile visited the credit union s headquarters at One Travis Way in Vacaville. 8

9 Mad City Money Travis Credit Union employees and others helped teach teens basic money management skills at our Mad City Money workshop on July 29, 2014 at Paradise Skate in Antioch. Stuff the Bus Campaign Travis employees helped Solano County s homeless youth get a good start to the school year by participating in its Stuff the Bus campaign this summer. Employees donated school supplies such as backpacks, binders, calculators and colored pencils to help the more than 1,400 homeless students in our community. Jelly Belly Mascot Day Travis Credit Union s T-Bird joined other community mascots for Jelly Belly s Mascot Day at its complex in Fairfield on Aug. 6. T-Bird makes appearances throughout the communities we serve. Special Olympics Travis Credit Union is proud to support The Concord POA Golf Tournament on Aug 4. 11 Air Force Credit Union of the Year Free Seminars Travis Credit Union offers a variety of free seminars throughout the year on a range of subjects designed to help you achieve your important personal and financial goals. Here are a few happening soon. All seminars are held in our Community Room at One Travis Way in Vacaville. You can sign up online at at least five days before the seminar. The Psychology of Spending Tuesday, October 14, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. (PDT) Travis Credit Union has been named the 2013 Air Force Credit Union of the Year for its category. The award was presented by the Defense Credit Union Council on Aug. 26, 2014 during its 51st convention in Dallas, Texas. On hand to receive the award was Travis Credit Union Branch Manager Marianne Walker, who heads the branch on Travis Air Force Base, Fred Zaragosa, the credit union s TAFB Liaison and Sherry Cordonnier, Travis Credit Union s director of Corporate Relations. Air Force officials praised the credit union for its outstanding personal financial management, education programs, financial products and its strong community support. The council also recognized the credit union s efforts to help military service members on Travis AFB with an emergency loan product following the 2013 government shutdown. It is the fourth time Travis Credit Union has been honored with this award. We received this award in 2000, 2002 and The credit union was founded in 1951 by military and civilian workers on Travis Air Force Base. It now has 22 branches serving 12 Northern California counties. Psychologists have found that there are several forces that govern our consumer behavior and cause us to make decisions that are not necessarily rational or in our best interest. Understanding why we buy what we buy can help us make better decisions in the future. This seminar covers factors that commonly affect the psychology of our spending, including the role of advertising, spending habits, impulse buying, bargain hunting and retail therapy. Other topics include keeping up with the Joneses, money as love and procrastination of bills. Women & Money 3: Are You Ready for Change? Wednesday, November 5, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. (PDT) This seminar will help women move from chaos to clarity. Are You Ready for Change? is the third seminar in this three-part series for women. You ll learn how to organize important papers, complete financial documents, tie up estate planning loose ends, review your investment goals and identify reliable resources. You ll also set in motion your own plan for financial independence. Understanding Your Rollover Options Wednesday, November 5, 2014, from 11a.m. to Noon (PDT) Presenter Tom Kelly from Pacific Life, regional vice president of annuities and mutual funds, will discuss how to understand your rollover options. Learn about the terms, taxes and penalties associated with the rollover of your retirement fund. You ll gain insight into your options and process involved. Our new ATMs will have the ability to scan deposits, which means no envelopes will be needed or required! Your deposits will be scanned and the images will be printed on your ATM receipt for your reference and convenience. We re excited to announce that a new Travis Credit Union branch will be opening soon in Vacaville. Our new Financial Solutions Center will be located in the newly built Nut Tree Shopping Center that sits between E. Monte Vista and I-80.
