4 Life at James Cook University Queen Street Mall, Brisbane The Campus and Location Brisbane is Australia's New World City; with a diverse multicultural population of over 2.2 million, making Brisbane a centre of creativity and invention. The city provides students with forward- thinking educational providers and world-class research facilities all in a subtropical climate. Brisbane is a safe and friendly city with a generous community spirit and weather that creates an outdoor lifestyle. Australia's low crime rates and Brisbane's comparatively lower living expenses and tuition costs, makes the city one of the most liveable and safest places in the world. James Cook University Brisbane Campus is a modern high rise building, centrally located in the Central Business District (CBD) located on Queen Street. Students have access to study space, computer stations, high speed internet and WiFi, leisure and activity rooms, all within walking distance of the riverfront, Queen Street's main shopping mall, city library and the many shops, parks and cafes that the city has to offer. The campus is easily accessible via the many forms of public transport which is heavily discounted to students. Sense of Family JCU Brisbane is renowned for its friendliness and sense of family. Students will enjoy a supportive study environment, highly qualified lecturers with industry experience and a welcoming atmosphere that emphasises personal contact between students and staff. Trimester System The JCU Brisbane academic calendar caters for three study periods (or trimesters) beginning in March, July and November. This arrangement allows students to complete more subjects per year than a standard semester program traditionally operating at other Australian universities. JCU Brisbane is the only JCU campus in Australia to operate a trimester model. Student Concierge Student Concierge is our most direct interface with our students, and contributes significantly to an enhanced student experience through positive engagement. Customer service is of our highest priority providing; promptness, completeness, consistency and accessibility to all areas of the University. The Student Concierge team works with students to ensure that study at James Cook University Brisbane is a memorable and enriched experience. Student Mentor Program The Student Mentor Program was implemented in July 2009 to help new students adapt to university life and be a part of the JCU Brisbane community to enhance their learning experience and study outcomes. This program matches a student (mentee) with a mentor, who is a current student wanting to share their knowledge and experiences with new students. The mentor process begins each trimester when students are matched according to their field of study or discipline. This program is facilitated by the Mentor Coordinator and Student Mentors and is available to both new and current students. Language and Learning Centre The Language and Learning Centre is staffed by qualified and experienced Learning Advisers who work with students to give practical advice and strategies to master the English academic language skills needed to study successfully in an Australian university. Learning Advisers work with students from all programs and at all levels to help improve academic language skills. Students who experience difficulty adjusting to the academic requirements of tertiary study through to high achieving students who are aiming for excellence can all be supported and assisted by a Learning Adviser. Learning Advisers also work closely with the Faculty to ensure that the help students get is targeted toward their studies. The Language and Learning Centre offers a drop- in service, one-to-one appointments and small group workshops which are advertised regularly. This means that students have an abundance of opportunities to get the support, advice and assistance needed to succeed. Student Council The JCU Brisbane Student Council is a team of enthusiastic and self-motivated students who aim to build a bridge of communication between students and JCU Brisbane staff by representing the students in matters and concerns that may affect them within the university environment. The Student Council's mission is to be the voice and to act on behalf of all JCU Brisbane students for education that is accessible, equitable and free from discrimination. The council aims to provide discussion and debates that are beneficial to improving the campus facilities and services; and to promote educational, social, cultural and recreational student activities through regular events. Dean's Academic Award All enrolled students are eligible to compete for the Dean's Academic Award. This award program is specifically designed for students enrolled in Brisbane programs. Awards are of monetary value. The Dean's Academic Awards gives all students in eligible programs the recognition for their high academic achievements throughout their stay at JCU Brisbane and ultimately makes them eligible to compete for a JCU university medal. Employment and Careers Services - Through Joblinx Joblinx is a privately-owned employment consultancy, offering JCU Brisbane students a wide range of employment and career services and training to enhance their employability skills and improve their employment prospects. Joblinx services include assisting students with finding part-time, casual and graduate employment, as well as providing training, professional development and work experience programs

5 Additional Study Locations James Cook University A brighter future James Cook University (JCU) is Australia s leading university for the tropics. Offering excellence in teaching and research, JCU is a vibrant university operating across two countries and three tropical campuses, with locations in the North Queensland cities of Cairns and Townsville and in the city-state of Singapore. JCU also has a campus in Brisbane city operated by Russo Higher Education. Total student enrolments are over 20,000 and growing, including over 6,000 international students from 100 countries. International students have a choice of more than 300 programs available to study across JCU s three campuses. CAIRNS The JCU Cairns campus combines a spectacular natural setting with modern and innovative teaching facilities. The campus is located at the foot of rainforest-covered mountains, 15 kilometres (approximately 9 miles) north of the city centre and near the popular northern beaches suburbs. With over 4,000 students enrolled, including more than 400 international students, the campus has a range of services and facilities, from sporting amenities, to a café and bar. Recent developments include a state-of-theart teaching facility for dentistry, and a similar signature facility called The Cairns Institute. TOWNSVILLE The JCU Townsville campus is located in a peaceful 386-hectare setting of natural bush and parkland full of native Australian flora and fauna 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the city centre. Over 13,000 students, including approximately 1,500 international students, are enrolled at JCU, Townsville. Students from diverse backgrounds live on campus in colleges and halls of residence. The campus offers a range of facilities and services for students, including a medical clinic, pharmacy and dentist, childcare options, sporting amenities, food outlets and technology enriched learning facilities. SINGAPORE JCU Singapore is fully owned by James Cook University Australia. The University established JCU Singapore in 2003 as part of its expressed intent of creating a brighter future for life in the tropics world-wide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference. JCU Singapore moved to a brand new, larger campus with updated facilities in March Student enrolment at the campus has grown rapidly from 50 students in 2003 to approximately 3000 students in Campus facilities include lecture and seminar rooms, a fully equipped library, computer laboratories, an onsite bistro and access to a variety of sporting facilities

Leading Our Students To Work Through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) At JCU Brisbane, Work-Integrated Learning means that students learn through a unique combination of practical, professional experiences and classroom study. It means they can expect to have the opportunity to learn in ways which are linked to the real world of business. It means they will be able to apply theory to their chosen profession; will be able to solve complex business issues; work with clients and industry leaders; and it means they will become more attractive to employers as a fully-prepared work-ready graduate Why is it important Employers want confident graduates who can demonstrate through their studies that they have the knowledge, skills and professional experience to work in a highly globalised, complex world. Business graduates who undertake industryrelated experiences as part of their degree are in high demand. Graduates who have worked on projects with public or private organisations, were coached by executives, or have worked as interns in companies significantly increase their employment prospects. The James Cook University degree is built around providing its students with as many work-integrated learning experiences as possible WIL at JCU Brisbane WIL at JCU Brisbane is maximised through using a range of activities and experiences to expose students to a variety of authentic industryrelated situations. This can include professional internships, working in a group, visiting Australian business or having corporate leader s work with students in the classroom. The scope and variety of real-life learning experiences is limitless and JCU Brisbane ensures students are engaging with industry at every level of their degree. Participating in work-integrated learning assists students to make connections between classroom theory and workplace practice. It gives insights into students chosen occupation, improves their understanding of the real world of business and enhances international employment opportunities. Bachelor of Business (Work Experience) In the Bachelor of Business (all Majors), students are required to participate in work experience subjects which will see them a) enrolled in a multi-disciplinary subject as part of a student group or (b) working in a professional industry environment learning from people in a selected company*. These subjects are a unique opportunity for international students to gain insight and experience of Australian work environments and Australian companies and earn credit toward their Bachelor degree. Masters Degree Internship All Master degree programs at JCU Brisbane contain an option for students to engage with the business community through a practical or research project unit which provides an opportunity to compliment theory learnt in the classroom through an internship* in the real world of business. Being part of a corporate team and working together with various business units and / or community groups facilitates a thorough understanding and invaluable insight into Australian corporate life thus enhancing career opportunities. WIL in all Degrees In all JCU Brisbane degrees WIL experiences occur in different subjects and form part of the degree structure. For example, some subjects include site visits to internationally recognised companies, corporate executives are invited onto the campus to discuss current business issues, real-world projects are in-sourced for students to work on, and students can be given the opportunity to pitch business ideas to entrepreneurs. I would recommend to every international student to approach Joblinx for better career opportunities Ventaka Narayana, India - MITHM The JCU Brisbane Pathway The JCU Brisbane Pathway Access to a direct pathway to JCU Brisbane is through our partner college, Sarina Russo Institute. The college offers a flexible path to university study with committed teaching staff, dynamic programs and intensive support throughout their studies. The college offers a variety of English Language study programs co-located in the same building as the University. This unique relationship ensures that students are already in a university environment and have the same services available to them as university students, including Joblinx. It also means a seamless transition into university. The Sarina Russo Institute offers English language programs designed to help students qualify for tertiary study; successfully provide an English language exam or improve English communication skills. If students meet the academic entry requirements but not the English Language entry requirements, JCU Brisbane can issue a packaged offer consisting of a period of Academic English language studies through Sarina Russo Institute, plus an offer into the JCU Degree program. This package will allow the applicant eligibility to receive a student visa for the entire duration of their studies. The length of the English study period will depend on individual English language levels at the time of application (as determined by an IELTS score or equivalent) and the English requirement for the course selected. Unipath English This program is designed to prepare and equip students for further studies at diploma and tertiary level, focusing on academic requirements and expectations, development of language skills and learning strategies. The program develops and enhances language skills for successfully undertaking all aspects of student life. Upon completion students will be equipped to enter a range of undergraduate or postgraduate courses available at James Cook University Brisbane. IELTS Preparation (Evening classes) The IELTS Preparation course objective is to help higher level students reach their desired IELTS band score. The course focuses on two aspects. First, students improve their English language skills, including grammar and vocabulary, which are essential for good IELTS performance. Second, the course provides IELTS practice sessions every lesson, including targeted feedback. Intensive General English Sarina Russo Institute Intensive General English curriculum is designed to help students improve their English language ability and develop the student s confidence in using English for general purposes. Students improve their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation so they can communicate more effectively in English. The program has been developed to enable students to tailor their studies to fit their individual needs. Students can focus on the specific areas of their English language they wish to improve and incorporate learning with areas of personal interest through the Your Class electives to make learning interesting and effective. Other English language tests may also be accepted as proof of English language proficiency. Students who have successfully completed two years full-time study in which the language of instruction was English may satisfy the English requirement. To be considered, the study must have been undertaken no more than two years prior to the date on the JCU Letter of Offer. Students must provide a certificate or statement issued by the Registrar s office of that institution confirming this. Courses Information: Undergraduate Courses Your Academic Pathway into the Bachelor of Business (BBus) degree Standard Duration 3 Trimesters Total No. of Subjects 8 Intakes March, July and November OVERVIEW The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) provides a flexible opportunity for international students to make the transition from secondary school into undergraduate studies. This program allows students who are not eligible to enrol directly into an undergraduate program to achieve a quality Australian University qualification through a highly regarded university. Australian education has different teaching styles and different learning expectations. These differences of culture, language and educational systems experienced by international students can be, at times, challenging. As such, students can require particular assistance. The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) is taken as an alternative to the first year of the Bachelor of Business program when a student s background indicates the need for extended teaching and learning support to progress in the Australian educational system. Students receive more class time than those in the Bachelor of Business program. Enrolling in the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) program does not extend the duration of the Bachelor of Business degree. The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) plus the Bachelor of Business degree package can still be completed within three (3) years, because direct credit is given for the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) towards the Bachelor of Business at JCU. These subjects include essential skills in effective writing, speaking and mathematics. With this structure, the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) is a very effective pathway to university Bachelor degrees for many international students. ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT INTO DIPLOMA Students are eligible for up to two (2) subject credits from prior learning at an appropriate level* into the Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies). Note: There are no exemptions from CU1022 or CS1022. *Subject to JCU approval ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT FROM DIPLOMA INTO BACHELOR Completion of the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) gains an advanced standing of eight (8) subject credits towards the JCU Bachelor of Business with a single major. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) graduates may enter the workforce at entry level, however most graduates move into the Bachelor of Business course on completion of the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies). They may then gain employment opportunities in management, marketing, human resource management, accounting, finance, tourism, and hospitality. Throughout the business community successful JCU graduates have found employment in finance, tourism, mining, agriculture, export, real estate, technology, retail, leisure and entertainment, health, philanthropic and welfare organisations, education and manufacturing. The degree underwent a significant refresh during 2013 to better align with current global realities. The specific majors have been updated and the result is a well-structured, professionally formulated world class degree. The Bachelor of Business program provides graduates with current industryrelevant knowledge, skills, and experience to assist their transition into the professional business world. Upon graduation, successful students possess and can apply the problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are valued in today s business world. Throughout their degree studies, students start with the core subjects (which are essential to any Bachelor of Business degree program), and then focus on their areas of interest and specialty. COURSE DESCRIPTION Every student must undertake at least one major. A variety of double majors and minors are available and students may study single or double majors and/or minors consistent with their interests, career aspirations and the course rules. Each program is comprised of 24 subjects in total. Students must nominate one of the Business Majors listed when first making application for admission. The choice of a second major and/ or minor(s) is normally made after admission to the course. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is a feature of the program and the options at JCU Brisbane are described on Page 7. The program of 24 subjects is made up of: a Core [Eight (8) subjects] + a Major [Eight (8) subjects] + Electives [Eight (8) subjects], with the exception of Bachelor of Business (Accounting). Please refer to Bachelor of Business Accounting Major subjects for full details. ELECTIVES Select 8 subjects in accordance with the course rules. The eight (8) electives chosen must contain at least four (4) business subjects offered at the Brisbane Campus. If desired the selection of the 8 subjects may be made so as to constitute a second business major. In the case of the accredited accounting program three (3) of the 4 elective business units are prescribed, so a second major is not possible for students who choose to do an Accounting Major. 10 Bachelor of Business Majors Accounting KEY FEATURES This major is professionally accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) and Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia Accounting skills are always in demand COURSE OVERVIEW Accounting is at the core of every organisation, ensuring its financial viability. JCU has trained hundreds of qualified accountants and is strongly supported by the local accounting profession. Foundation subjects are complemented by specialist topics in, for example, business modelling, financial management, auditing, law of business organisations, taxation, contemporary issues in accounting and performance management and control. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Accountants are in demand around Australia and across the world. The profession is dynamic, with new roles evolving including e-commerce and environmental accounting. Employment options in the public and private sectors include: public accounting practice, financial and management accounting, systems accountant, financial officer, financial analyst, management consulting, stockbroker, merchant banker, financial institutional manager, policy advisor, taxation and financial planning, and corporate bankruptcy, insolvency and recovery. Accountants often move to executive-level positions. For more information about DIBP's Genuine Temporary Entrant and Genuine Student requirements see: Working as a Student Under Australian immigration regulations, students on a student visa may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during university teaching periods and without restriction during university vacations. Permission to work in Australia will be automatically included when the student is granted with a student visa. Working rights for partners If a student s spouse is joining them, they will also be able to work whilst the student is studying in Australia and can apply for a permission to work visa. The work conditions for the spouse will vary depending on the degree that is being studying. Bringing Family Spouses and children can join the student in Australia but each family member must be added to the student visa application, and certain conditions will apply depending on the age of each member. If the children will be attending school while in Australia, school fees will need to be paid for them. For more information, visit: html ESOS Act and Tuition Protection Service As a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. JCU s Tuition Fee Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The Policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at: student/finance/jcudev_ Important Information The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. The TPS replaces the Tuition Assurance Scheme and the ESOS Assurance Fund. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not meet its legal obligations to make alternative course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see: Deferral, Temporary Suspension or Cancellation of Enrolment The ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when students, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel student enrolment. Deferring commencement of study, or taking a leave of absence once studies have commenced can only take place when there are compassionate or compelling reasons for doing so. A compassionate or compelling reason is something which is beyond the student s control and which has, or will have, an impact on academic progress or wellbeing. The University may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation of study see: Registration and Orientation Week Registration and Orientation at JCU Brisbane is compulsory for all newly enrolled students to attend. This week is spent ensuring that all students are correctly registered and enrolled in their program, receive their student cards and get their student logins, so they can start their chosen course and subjects on time. Registration and Orientation is also a campus-wide celebration for students commencing their studies at JCU Brisbane, it is an excellent opportunity to meet lecturing staff and make friends upon arriving into Brisbane. For most students, this week is usually the first taste of university life in a new country, and for this reason, Registration and Orientation at JCU Brisbane has been carefully planned to ensure students a smooth transition into Australian studies and campus life, enhancing the student experience. Registration and workshops are compulsory, therefore flights to Brisbane will need to be booked to include attendance to these events. A detailed schedule for Registration and Orientation week is usually available online at a month before the start of a new trimester. How Potential Students Will Be Assessed The University has a variety of assessment methods that apply to its courses. These include examinations, essays, oral presentations, group projects, assignments, quizzes, practical examinations, placements, laboratory reports, class participation, theses and workshops. 19 Planning Your Budget Tuition Fees TUITION FEES Tuition fees vary between degrees, and increase each new calendar year. Up to date course fees and duration can be found on our website at Annual fees are calculated based on eight (8) subjects, except the Postgraduate Qualifying Program - Business, which consist of four (4) subjects. OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVER (OSHC) Students are required to organise private health insurance before coming to study in Australia and to maintain this insurance for the duration of their studies. Norwegian and Swedish citizens do not require OSHC. OSHC is a requirement for student Visa holders only. Students may arrange their own OSHC or have JCU arrange it on their behalf. Fees vary depending on the length of the student visa and are subject to change. OSHC fees are approximately $AU 519* per year for a single student. Students with a spouse and/or other dependants are required to pay a higher premium. BOOKS AND MISCELLANEOUS STUDY EXPENSES A minimum of $AU 400 per trimester is required for text books. Students will also need to budget for other study associated costs such as stationery and subject handbooks. STUDENT SERVICES AND AMENITIES FEE (SSA FEE) The SSA Fee is charged on the basis of study load. In 2015, the charge is $42.90 per 3 credit points, to a maximum of $281 per calendar year. The income from the SSA Fee is used to improve services and facilities on and off campus. The SSA Fee is helping to build a better university experience for you.
