2 2 NUUS As jy nie Afrikaans is nie, is jy niks werd nie Wit man vloek en wurg swart man in McDonald s HANNES KRUGER Twee wit Afrikaanse mansstudente het vroeg Saterdagoggend na bewering drie swart studente in McDonald s aangeval ná hulle die twee wit studente gevra het om die personeel nie soos honde te hanteer nie. Volgens Lwazi Pakade, n SASCO-lid op kampus, het hy en twee vriende gesien hoe die twee wit studente in McDonald s glo die personeel geteister het. Hulle het vir die vroue agter die tellers soos honde gefluit en met hulle soos klein hondjies gepraat, het Pakade gesê. Hulle het ook glo onophoudelik aan een van die vroue se voorkant van haar hoed getik. Die aard van die veldtog is nog onder bespreking, GEVANG OP KAMERA Studente beweeg onwettig rond in botaniese tuine manskoshuis waar hulle woon teruggespoor. Die twee verdagtes is later ontdek en volgens Smit word dissiplinêre stappe tans geneem. Smit het gesê dat hy gemeenskapsdiens wil voorstel as straf, verkieslik by die Botaniese Tuin self. Daar is in die verlede ook ander gevalle van oortreding by die Botaniese Tuin aangemeld. Smit het vertel van ʼn man wat op Maandagmiddag 16 Februarie gearresteer en toegesluit is vir oortreding in ʼn area waar slegs personeel toegelaat word. Op dieselfde dag, gedurende die aand, het ʼn mansstudent weer die Tuin betree. Kampus Sekuriteit het egter hierdie keer betyds opgedaag. Die student beweer dat hy geskrik het en oor die hek gespring het vir beskerming. Daar was ook al gevalle maar volgens Greyvenstein sal dit hoofsaaklik op bewusmaking fokus. Volgens Tarina Nel, voorsitter: PK, is daar tydens Dinsdag se PK vergadering verwys na besoektye in koshuise en dat die bestaande reëls hersien en beter geïmplementeer sal moet word. Volgens Nel sal daar op kampus ʼn kultuur van verantwoordelikheid en respek geskep moet word. Die gebruik van alkohol is ook uitgewys as ʼn groot probleem as dit kom by hierdie soort voorvalle. Nel het verder gesê die PK kyk ook tans na die gebruik van alkohol buite alkoholvryesones en na manskoshuise se klubs. JC Landman, SR-lid, het dit onder almal se aandag gebring dat verkragting nie net tussen mans en vroue gebeur nie, maar ook tussen persone van dieselfde geslag. Vir hierdie probleme sal besoektye en inkomtye dus nie help nie en ander oplossings sal gevind moet word. waar paartjies na ure in die Tuin betrap is om onder meer piekniek te hou. Hieroor sê Smit: Die Tuin is nie ʼn plek om in die aand ʼn romantiese piekniek te hou nie. Smit het gemeen dat hierdie sinnelose voorvalle van oortreding en vandalisme ʼn bron van irritasie is. Martin Viljoen, US woordvoerder, het die volgende in verband met die insident gesê: Die Universiteit het kennis geneem van die Studenteraad se inisiatiewe vir groter debat en gesprekke rondom inkomtye en besoekure aan koshuise. Die veiligheid van studente op kampus is prioriteit vir die Universiteitsbestuur en verwelkom daarom enige gesprek hieroor en bied graag ondersteuning aan veldtogte om groter bewustheid te skep op kampus oor persoonlike veiligheid te skep.

Dit is n bewys van hoe die HKlede in hul misplaaste vergryp na tradisie terugval op die geykte vorme van geweld om hulle klein ego s te streel. Students and lecturers alike streamed down to the building to witness the building being consumed by flames. According to Martin Viljoen, spokesperson for Stellenbosch University, the fire broke out on Sunday morning just before 09:00 and had been detained by 11:00. The cause of the fire, although not yet confirmed, is reported to be an electrical short-circuit. The fire damaged large sections of the third floor and the second and first floor sustained fire, water and debris damage. This was confirmed by Captain Tasso Steyn, from the Stellenbosch Municipal Fire Brigade, who was on the scene. Captain Steyn told eyewitnesses on the scene that the Honours Auditorium was the source of the fire, as the flames from this source were the most violent. Despite the age of the building and its wooden interior structure, Susan van der Merwe, communications manager for the University, maintains that the building was not a fire hazard and that the fire was entirely accidental. Fire walls were erected and smoke detectors installed in older campus buildings to mitigate fire risks after the Eendrag fire, Van der Merwe said. Despite the devastation, the University has elected to proceed in hosting the annual open day on 28 February Van der Merwe also reassures current and prospective students that the area around the Van der Sterr building has been secured and does not pose a threat to student or visitor safety. The extent of the damage could not yet be confirmed but it is likely that the reconstruction of the building will continue throughout the year. In the meantime, classes for students of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) have been postponed for the week of February and will only commence on 8 March Various venues have been allocated to accommodate students of this faculty. Sy kollega Frans Arendse meen dat studente beter opgelei behoort te word ten opsigte van die veiligheidsmaatreëls wat die Universiteit in plek het. Hy bedoel dat opleiding van studente kan lei tot die voorkoming van soortgelyke gebeure op die kampus. Eendrag aan die brand in 2007 Eendrag-manskoshuis In 2007 is die derde verdieping van Eendrag Manskoshuis in puin gelê. Die vuur het in die vroeë oggendure ontstaan en, danksy rookverklikkers, kon die slapende inwoners van dié koshuis veilig ontruim. In dié insident is vier studente beseer nadat hulle na veiligheid gespring het vanaf hul kamervensters. Die Universiteit het bewegings in plek gestel om die inwoners se persoonlike dokumente en bankkaarte aan hulle terug te besorg en elke inwoner het n fooi van R750 ontvang, ongeag die koste van die skade aan hul eiendom. RW Wilcocks Op 10 Desember 2010 het ʼn soortgelyke toneel op die Stellenboschkampus afgespeel. Die RW Wilcocksgebou wat in 1965 opgerig is, het op die dag van die jaar se laaste gradeplegtigheid aan die brand geraak en die dak en die derde verdieping van die gebou verwoes. Alhoewel die twee onderste verdiepings onaangeraak was gebly het, het dit geweldige waterskade opgedoen en daarom is die besluit geneem om die gebou geheel en al te restoureer. Verskeie belangrike akademiese materiaal, insluitend ʼn handgeskrewe kaart wat sowat 300 jaar terug dateer, is in die brand verwoes. Die gebou het ook hoofsaaklik uit houtraamwerke bestaan. Metanoia In 2012 het ʼn brand by Metanoia uitgebreek, maar dit is vinnig weer onder beheer gebring. Volgens ooggetuies is die brand veroorsaak deur beddegoed wat vlam gevat het nadat ʼn kamer verwarmer omgekantel het. Die vuur het omstreeks 10:30 uitgebreek, waarna studente te vergeefs probeer het om dit te blus. Standaard veiligheidsmaatreëls is gevolg en niemand is tydens die voorval beseer nie. So sê raadslid Dawid Botha, wat hom vir n geruime tyd reeds beywer vir veilige fietsry en vir afsonderlike fietspaaie op die dorp. Volgens Botha is die doel van die munisipaliteit se omvattende fietsplan om, waar moontlilk, fietsryers te skei van motors. So n geskeide fietspad word tans in Maraisstraat gebou en sal teen die einde van hierdie finansiële jaar (30 Junie) voltooi wees. Maraisstraat is n proeflopie om die res van Stellenbosch ook fietsvriendelik te maak. Botha, wat reeds meer as 15 jaar n raadlid is, sê duidelike stippellyne sal moontlik aangebring word in nou strate waar n bykomende fietsrybaan nie gebou kan word nie. Die Maraisstraatprojek het in 2014 begin toe Botha en amptenare van die Stellenbosch Munisipaliteit se Ingenieursdienste, tydens die beplanning vir die herbou van Maraistraat, besluit het om voorsiening te maak vir fietse. Die meeste mense dink dat n valhelm n fietsryer se veiligheid sal verseker, maar dis nie altyd die geval nie. Fietsryers het in die eerste plek n veilige omgewing nodig. Vicky Vermeulen, ook n ingenieurstudent, sê die projek sal haar baie baat en n veilige ruimte skep vir fietsryers. Volgens Botha sal die Fietsplan vir die dorp moontlik teen Mei-maand vanjaar voltooi wees. Die bespreking en die implementering van die projek sal daarna volg. A LACK of proper communication from road construction authorities left several students stranded when they found their cars trapped by large concrete blocks and other road construction materials. This meant that several students could not get to classes on time while others could not drive home. To rub salt into open wounds, some of the cars were plastered with traffic fines even though the trapped vehicles could not be moved. Construction workers are building a cycle path and will also resurface sections of Marais Street. One irate student, Tessa Hart, said when she recently arrived at her car, parked on the gravel verge of Marais Street close to Merriman Circle, she could not move her vehicle because four concrete blocks had been placed behind it. When I saw my car was blocked in, I attempted to find a nearby construction worker to assist me, but there was no one around. I could not move the large concrete blocks behind my car. I had no idea who to contact as there was no warnings or information given out. Upcountry Theology student, Rodé Brand, who depends on parking off Marais Street, said having her own vehicle at university was essential. She understood the need for safer cycle and pedestrian pathways, but believed a solution needed to be found for parking shortages in the town. Stellenbosch Traffic Department s Head of Traffic Law Enforcement, Janine Waldis, said the public was informed by means of flyers and in media reports. ELLEN AGNEW ESTABLISHED as a means of creating awareness surrounding the role of fossil fuel companies in the perpetuation of climate change, Eco Maties celebrated Divestment Day on 13 February by hosting an advisory talk with SRc Sustainability head JC Landman and conservation ecology student, Steven Myburgh. Opposing the idea of investment, divestment simply means getting rid of unethical and morally ambiguous stocks, bonds or investment funds within fossil fuel companies that burn a disreputable amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases every year. The effect of burning these gases goes far beyond being an exclusively environmental issue: the Climate Vulnerability Monitor has attributed deaths a year to climate change. Countries are attempting to prevent this number from rising, as well as causing more harm on the environment. They have agreed to keep the warming below a two degree Celsius increase, where only then a fraction of a chance of preventing runaway climate change will be provided. Myburgh articulated that, simply put, the placement of sanctions against fossil fuel companies might just be the most important fight of our lives in the prevention of the the perpetuation of climate change. Emphasising that an official divestment campaign has not yet been started on campus, the event was merely held to stand in solidarity with divestment campaigns around the world and to encourage students to become more aware of what they can do in the fight against climate change. Die projek behoort teen 31 Oktober 2015 voltooi te wees en die koshuis sal in Januarie 2016 sy eertse inwoners in ontvangs kan neem. Op die Stellenbosch-kampus is daar ook n paar projekte in die pyplyn. Die herinrigting van die bestaande Eiendomsdienstewerkswinkel vir INNOVUS se LaunchLab sal binnekort voltooi wees. ʼn Nuwe IT-gebou is tans in aanbou en word beoog om in die tweede helfte van die jaar voltooi te wees. Die gebou sal beskikbaar wees vir alle studente se gebruik. Om meer studente in die Eerstejaars Chemiegebou te akkomodeer word twee van die laboratoriums tans omskep in nuwe lesingslokale. Dié projek sal ook na verwagting in die tweede helfte van die jaar voltooi wees. Die De Beers-, JS Marais- en die Natuurwetenskappegeboue word tans toegerus met hysbakfasiliteite en die verwagte voltooiingsdatum is in April vanjaar. Die rennovering van lokale in die Rekeningkunde- en Statistiekgebou is n bouprojek wat reeds aan die begin van die jaar mee begin is. Hierdie gebou is egter op Sondag 22 Februarie deur n verwoestende brand beskadig. Dié projek het die opgradering van lesingslokale, die verdigting van kantoorruimtes en die opgradering van infrastruktuur, elektriese werk en die voldoening aan brandregulasies, behels. Die verwagte voltooiingsdatum is beplan gewees vir Junie Wat koshuise op die Stellenbosch kampus betref, word daar tans veranderinge aangebring by Eendrag, Simonsberg en Huis ten Bosch om PSO-studente toegang tot gemeenskaplike lokale soos eetsale, ontspanningslokale en toilette te bied Hierdie projek word beplan om teen Mei 2015 voltooi te wees.

7 25 Februarie kwytraak Mmusi Maimane - man of magnitude The DA Parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane was at the opening of DASO Maties. He told Lynné Schoeman about the turning points in his life, the hardest part of his job, and how it feels to be a YouTube sensation. Just a few days ago he called the president a broken man, presiding over a broken society. A summary of his speech at the State of the Nation Address Debate has had more than views on YouTube. Look, I respect my elders like my parents taught me, but 53% of South Africans live below the poverty line, and we will not say nice things in the name of decorum. It s not pretty, but it is urgent and desperate. Mmusi Maimane, the DA Parliamentary leader is sitting next to me in the front row of Room 230 in the BA Building. He was invited to speak at the opening of DASO Maties and agreed to a brief interview afterwards. I want to know when he first became politically aware. I was 11, he says. It coincided with the gunning down of Chris Hani. I watched it and I thought to myself that this cannot be right. I then made a decision that I would work hard for South Africa to be able to fight the injustice. His decision to go into politics had something to do with the Rosa Parks story of the American Civil Rights movement. There s a day where you sit on the bus and you think to yourself I m not moving. That day birthed the conceptualisation for me, he says. After that I went into business and I joined the ANC. Then I moved to the DA and I did a masters degree in public administration, which then became the focus. What triggered the move from the ANC to the DA? Zuma, he says without hesitation. Since as early as 2006 and 2007 I thought our country is going to be in trouble. Moments earlier he told the audience, I am not asking the president to do us a favour when I ask him to come to parliament to answer questions. Some people say, Ah, it s so nice of the president to show up. No. It is his job to answer questions in parliament four times a year. He also said, I am not proud of everything happening in parliament. South Africa should not be a country where people watch Parliament for entertainment. He explained why the DA walked out of Parliament. Apparently there was a securing over air space and an official forgot to switch it off. When we asked the minister, she said, We are unaware, but we ll look into it. That is a huge security intervention without her knowledge. Then he continued, The law says only allow police when there is a threat of loss of life or limb. If they were not police, why disguise them as waiters? Let them show up in their uniform so I at least know who I m dealing with. I mean, you guys go clubbing, right? I don t as much... but like the club has bouncers, Parliament has the same. The minister of police has authority over police, but when we asked him who these men were, the answer was we don t know. Some (of them) were armed... We could not, in good conscience just stay there. How does it feel to be a YouTube sensation? Oh really? he asks. Ah, that s sweet. I haven t been on YouTube. Has it got many views? I must go and look! he chuckles. Look, he says in a more serious tone, you don t sign up to be famous. I didn t think I d be famous. Not that I think I m famous now There are things about this life that I m still struggling to adjust to. My wife and I would go out for dinner and people would want to talk to us. It s like being a doctor and going to a party and someone comes to you and says look, I ve got this rash... The hardest part of his job is not being able to shut the hours and go home. He says, You always feel like you re at work, because your work is so (part of) you. He talked about his mixed marriage and how it would have been illegal under the apartheid regime. Does he have any advice for Maties who are involved in interracial relationships? There s no advice. Just treat them as normal as you can. Be normal and don t create any exception around it. His two children are still too young to be much affected by his political career. My gorgeous daughter is four and my son is two he s an EFF member, he says jokingly. They have grown up watching their daddy on TV. When we drive around my daughter would say, Look, I saw you on a poster! She thinks it s normal. He told the audience, We have to build a nation in which opportunities are given to young people and ensure their rights are protected. We need to ensure teach- ers are able to pass the very matric exams they prepare their learners for. He said that one day his daughter will know she can walk through any township and be safe. She will know that she can be employed as anything she wishes to be. My son will know that when he applies for a job, he will not be judged by the colour of his skin. It is the dream, it is possible. I ll tell my kids, The DA will rule one day, but I hope that when you get to vote that we will earn your vote. During the Q&A session someone asked him if and how he thinks people should pay back the privilege. Some material things you cannot pay back. But you can contribute Maimane grew up in Soweto. He came from a poor family, but compared to others I guess we were relatively okay. He told the audience how his life was impacted by two white South Africans who took the time to teach Maths and English in Soweto when he was a boy. When I got my degree I became the most qualified in my own home, he said. We need to create assets by empowering people; for them to own living space and have the opportunity to study for whatever they choose to become. But you cannot do that when you break down institutions. He emphasised that we need to recognise how the injustice of Apartheid is not about race, but about a party s policy. He said there is a misconception that you must express your race instead of your views and ideas at the polls. One way to contribute to our country, he said, is to learn another language it invites people. Maimane himself speaks seven languages. My Afrikaans is nog nie goed nie, maar ek probeer! And what would be his favourite Afrikaans word? Gatvol, he says, after considering a few bad words. I think it expresses enough. 8 8 REDAKSIONEEL editorial redaksioneel Part of the student population at this university is out of control. Too many students, many in top leadership positions, are acting irresponsibly and unethically. It must to come to an end. Maties commited the unaaceptable acts of initiation reported on page three. Maties vandalised the botanical gardens; see page two. Also refer to page two for the attack on two maties in McDonald s this past weekend. Investigation is ongoing as to the identity of the assailant. In the McDonald s incident Khule and Lwazi stood up for what is right. For what is ethical. But not all of us seem to. We cannot simply isolate these incidents, referring to them as a small part of our matie community. This university has a history of acts of violence and degradation and we seem unable to move on. The purpose of the proposed Matiebeleid is to curb the damaging, dehumanising ef fects that many residence traditions have on first years. Instead of looking at how traditions may be af fecting students adversely, there has been an outcry against the policy. The policy s proposals may be flawed: that is open for debate. But the mere unwillingness to even discuss these issues astounds me. These are, however, problems caused by the average matie on the Rooiplein. That said, the blame cannot be placed solely on any one person. Student leadership structures need to guard against the stagnation of their organisations into a constipated position of privilege and exclusion. They have to set an example to all maties. While being white and belonging to a church seem to count vastly in your favour at election time (for these positions), students that fall into minority categories are marginalised. Students who are gay or do not belong to a church/hold any religious beliefs, it is far easier to keep much of this part of their identity private, discrimintation while trying to make their way to the top. But such a choice severely restricts one s personal freedom, happiness Students of colour on the other hand Many student leadership structures fail to carry out their obligations in accordance with the Constitution. When I applied for University I had an internal debate about whether I should go to UCT or Stellenbosch. At first I thought UCT was the best but someone told me the student life at Stellenbosch is an experience you just don t have at UCT. Upon arrival, the whole concept of dif ferent residences seemed like something out of an American college movie. Every residence had something special. We could spot a Simonsberg boy jumping the queue at Tollies in his khakis, the Helderberg boy sporting some sort of merchandise, a Lydia girl in heels and a hat and an Erica girl with a bright pink umbrella from a mile away. I am currently in my second year of studies and I still live in res. I never got the impression that the little res traditions made people in other residences or private accommodation feel inferior. It was something that I thought made this campus one of the best in the world. When I arrived back this year during Jool I learnt that some of the famous traditions are banned. I could not be more disappointed in the person made this decision. Surely, since we live in these residences we should have a say? I know that if we as students were asked whether we want these traditions to stay or not, most of them would live on for many more years to come. I know there are traditions on campus that are outdated but they can be modified with our help. One of the reasons I came to Stellenbosch was for res life, but the fact that this is being taken away, is making me regret some of my decisions. PIETER BURGER Steve Hofmeyr is seker een van Suid-Afrika se mees bekende akteurs en sangers, maar hy maak die afgelope jaar of twee uitsprake wat n mens verstom laat dat enige mens met verstand die goed kan kwytraak wat hy kwytraak. Steve het nou al so bekend geword vir sy kontroversiële uitsprake dat verskeie musiekfeeste, waaronder die KKNK, hom geweier het. Om te bepaal of hierdie uitsluiting regverdig is, moet n mens eers na sy gedrag van die afgelope paar maande kyk. Steve se bekendste uitspraak was seker dat swartmense, volgens hom, die argitekte van Apartheid was. Soos wat ek dit hier skryf, verstom dit my weer. Hierdie uitspraak impliseer dat die swartmense van Suid-Afrika Apartheid oor hulself gebring het. Verder het Steve ook al gesê dat die meeste swartmense in Suid-Afrika n sin van verpligting voel teenoor misdaad, brutaliteit, kwotas en lae matriekuitslae. Daar was ook die hele debakel rondom die sing van Die Stem by Innibos Om iets hieroor te sê is moelik, want, alhoewel dit die nasionale lied van Apartheid was, is daar hoegenaamd niks in die lied wat verwys na rassisme nie. Die lirieke van die lied is ook baie mooi en dit inspireer nasionalisme. n Strofe van die lied word selfs ingesluit by die huidige volkslied. Aan die omkeerkant moet n mens ook verstaan hóékom dit sulke groot opslae gemaak het. Vir baie Suid-Afrikaners word dit gekoppel aan Apartheid en dit is iets van die verlede waaraan hulle nie herinner wil word nie. n Mens moet ook onthou dat dit deur Steve Hofmeyr gesing is, met politieke bybedoelings en waarskynlik in dieselfde lig as sy uitsprake. Steve se bekendste uitspraak was seker dat swartmense, volgens hom, die argitekte van Apartheid was. Soos wat ek dit hier skryf, verstom dit my weer. Verder sê Steve dat hy opstaan vir die regte van Afrikaanssprekende mense in Suid-Afrika, maar weet hy dan nie dat die meerderheid van die Wes- Kaap en Noord-Kaap se Afrikaanssprekendes bruinmense is nie? Wat van die vele swart gesinne wat Afrikaans hul huistaal ag? Hoekom sien n mens nooit dat hy hulle bystaan met kospakkies en skoolfondse nie? Hy verdeel Afrikaanssprekendes in hierdie tyd waar ons moet saamstaan vir ons taal. Die groot vraag is of dit regverdig was van die KKNK-bestuur om Steve uit hulle lys van opvoeringe te sluit. Die KKNK is n fees van Afrikaans en vir almal wat dit praat regoor die rasgrense heen. INGA DYANTI I am a Xhosa woman and in the Xhosa culture, we have various traditions among which is one known as the initiation school. Basically, an initiation school is not really a school. It s where Xhosa boys go in order to become men. Out of respect for my culture, I won t dwell too much on this subject (it is a bit of a cultural secret) but my point in bringing it up is to make you, the reader, aware that I am very familiar with initiation ceremonies. With that said, I assume that we are all aware that Stellenbosch University has various initiation methods for new students at Residences. I mean, in my 1st year, we had to attend a skakel, we had to wake up the HK at 6am in the morning singing ridiculous songs, we had to go sing at Boys Residences, etc. I didn t enjoy it, but I didn t hate it either, it was just one of those things that you just had to grin and bear. With that said, I don t have a problem with the silly things that first years have to do as part of their initiation. I do have a problem with the whole concept of initiation. In my understanding, initiations are done to change one from one state to another (boy to man, outsider to Stellies student). My issue is this: why must I, for example, dye my hair a shocking blonde or wear my clothes inside out in order to be accepted in Stellenbosch? Is the fact that I got an A-aggregate and got accepted to study here not enough? Must I further earn my keep via these unnecessary activities? What about that overweight first year in Simonsberg who can t climb Simonsberg? Does that then mean we do not accept him as a true Simonsberger because he has not climbed their beloved mountain? What about that black girl in Lydia, who is compelled (because they don t force you, they compel you) to go to a skakel only to then be rejected by a white guy: who refuses to dance with her because of the colour of her skin? She is later found crying her heart out in the shower. First years are, arguably, the most vulnerable of our student population. They are fresh out of high school; most of them are living on their own for the first time in their lives. To put them in situations where they have to be humiliated, stared at and laughed at this early in their University career is a pivotal mistake. We should be trying to make their lives easier, not breaking them down in order for them to become Maties. What are we? A prison gang? I understand that, dare I say, the vast majority of our student population enjoys the traditions and initiation methods that are deployed in Stellenbosch. I also understand that life-long friendships and adventures have been made through skakels and jooling and all these things. I understand that some of us came to Stellenbosch for the entire experience (initiation and all). HOWEVER, interests have to be weighed up against each other. That is the essence of a community such as ours. In the spirit of weighing up interests against each other, does your desire to have fun, meet new people and be silly via these initiation traditions weigh as heavily as someone else s rights to dignity, to be accepted and to be safe? I think not. It is my view that Stellenbosch residence initiations do more harm than good. The idea of alienating, isolating, and hurting people for the sake of fun is absurd! Stellenbosch needs to understand that times have changed. Stellenbosch University is transforming and with that transformation come various sensitivities and cultural considerations. The fact is, we need to adapt and we need to let go of certain things - initiation being one of them. Our identity as a university goes further than traditions. Our identity is in our town, it s in our academics, it s in our languages, it s in our history, it s in our rugby, it s in the names of our residences; it s in our students. Traditions are not, and should not be the scope of how we define Matie. KYLE SMITH The annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) was undoubtedly one of the most significant events of its kind, in spite of President Jacob Zuma s speech on February 12. In fact, the address was incredibly bland, as always. Zuma read a prepared speech, putting many MPs to sleep, except for one key figure As expected, EFF leader Julius Malema, took it upon himself to ask Zuma when he would be paying South African taxpayers back the R246 million that it cost to build his Nkandla homestead. As was also expected, Zuma dodged the question. Malema continued to hound the president until Baleka Mbete, speaker of the National Assembly, intervened. Mbete eventually called in Security forces to remove several members of the EFF constituency, including Malema. The DA MPs staged a walkout, followed by several members of the UDM, when Mbete failed to adequately answer Mmusi Maimane, leader of the opposition, about whether the security forces included Police officers. The average South African citizen may ask, What does this all mean? or Why should I care?. These questions can be answered in two simple points. Firstly, by allowing the police force to intervene with elected members of parliament, the ANC may have violated the Constitution of our country (whether they did or did not depends on how it is interpreted by the judiciary). To elaborate on why the ANC (or rather, Baleka Mbete) is accused of violating the Constitution, police forces are not allowed to enter Parliament because they are under control of the executive, President Zuma, who should have no power in influencing how parliament is run. Our Constitution, which emphasizes that the executive and parliament should operate independently, is considered to be one of the best in the world. It is fundamental to our democracy. If the ANC is guilty of corruption, it s expected. If there is little service delivery, it s nothing new. But when the Constitution is blatantly disregarded, it s time to worry. The significance of the DA s walkout following the EFF s removal is simple. Firstly, both parties have become so dissatisfied with the way that the ANC have been running the country for the past 21 years that it was decided they were unnecessary to the procedures. Secondly, Julius Malema and Mmusi Maimane are two of the brightest young political leaders in the country. Both have big futures in politics and, if their respective parties combine into a political coalition, there is a realistic chance that they could unseat the ANC. The way both parties worked together to express their dissatisfaction indicates that coalition politics may be explored. In political theory, it is said that a democracy is not consolidated until power changes hands twice. If this happens in the future, our government could finally become accountable. So, with the question about the Constitution and the changes that could be made amongst the opposition, it would appear that our democracy currently stands at a crevice either it could take a giant leap forwards, or it could stumble, fall, and die.

Some consider second-hand clothing to be absolutely dreadful while others might see it as a challenge to give something old a second chance. On campus we see many students rocking their moms old jeans, genuine leather satchels or jackets. Beside the fact that they look fresh, wearing vintage items has many pros. For example; you are probably the only person who owns the unique piece and you most probably got it for free; from your granddad or another relative. For those of us who are not so lucky, don t worry, there is hope. There is this thing called thrift stores. Thrift shopping is an excellent way to get hold of vintage clothing, accessories and sometimes even shoes that are still in reasonably good IT S NOT LAST SEASON IT S VINTAGE condition. The best part is that you get something new to wear for next to nothing. We are students and we are all aware of the student budget, so if you are in the spirit to try this trend, go visit Closet-2-Closet, Green Sleeves or the Stellenbosch Hospice Shop. Closet-2-Closet: A relatively new shop situated on the corner of Merriman Avenue and Andringa Street. You can find a variety of new and second-hand female clothes. It s definitely worth checking out to find a vintage gem. Green Sleeves: People who have been Stellenbosch students for long enough will know this particular shop. It is not a second-hand shop in Stellenbosch anymore, but even better! Search for the Green Sleeves Facebook page and like it by doing that you will be up to date with all the vintage items they have and also which markets they will be attending. Stellenbosch Hospice Shop: This shop can be found on Borcherd Street. There you can find almost anything from vintage clothing to household goods; you can also donate items that you no longer use. The shop runs on donations and the money it generates goes to the non-profit organisation, Stellenbosch Hospice. Thrift shopping can be a way to help others and save money for yourself, and all-in-all is a very fun experience. If the idea of second-hand clothing is daunting to you, I challenge you. Hulle is vasbeslote om vars bestanddele op te spoor wat boonop plaaslik gekweek en vervaardig word. Hulle het die wêreld deurreis op soek na die beste resep vir hulle bevrore jogurt. Na maande se probeerslae het n melkboer in Suid-Afrika eendag hulp aangebied met die maak van die jogurt. Die 98% vetvrye mengsel bevat geen kleurmiddels of geurmiddels nie. Die bessiejogurt bevat dus regte vars bessies en die avokadogeur ja, daar is wel so n geur bevat regte avokadopeer. Ander geure sluit kokosneut, Nutella en Oreo in. Jean en Joris voel sterk oor die vanieljegeur en beskryf dit as vars, gesond en heerlik. Nadat die twee uitgevra is oor die interessante kombinasies waarmee klante vorendag kom by Myog, antwoord hulle glimlaggend: Ons het n dame gehad wat groenteegegeurde jogurt met Turkish delight, karamelsous en Smarties bestrooi het. Ons was nie so heeltemal seker oor dié kombinasie nie. Jean en Joris het ook n goeie verbeelding as dit by die uitdink van nuwe geure en kleure kom. Dit sluit cayenepeper, sjampanje, mojito en gesoute karamel in. Stellenbosch het baie om na uit te sien! Die winkel is klein, maar voel nie beknop nie. Die groen en pienk kleurskema is perfek vir die somer en n mens gaan sukkel om hier verby te loop. Hulle is ook besig om aan n suikervrye resep te werk vir die Banting-klomp alhoewel hulle nie gelukkig gaan wees met die vetvrysituasie nie. Myog is van Maandag tot Sondag tussen 09:00 en 00:00 oop. The many hairstyles of Stellenbosch University students Splitting hairs Photos: CHRISTINA PITT CHRISTINA PITT As someone with somewhat problematic hair, I spend most of my life on a chair in the hair salon with an outdated copy of People magazine on my lap. The salon plays such an integral role in my life that the most romantic thing a man can do is bring me food while I m sitting under the dryer. I have witnessed many a wondrous thing from this hot seat I have seen miracles being performed at the hands of skilled artists transforming potential National Geographic candidates into beautiful, silken-haired maidens. If there s one lesson I have learned from my lengthy visits to the hair salon it is this: perfect hair is not born, it is created. For many, no scent is more familiar than the smell of freshly GHDd (read burnt ) hair in the morning. This wonderful fragrance seems to waft from the boys rooms these days, much to their denial, as more and more men are taking pride in their crowning glory. There is no shame in grooming yourself, but put that Beautiful Beginnings relaxer down, because there is no coming back from that. You need to take care of your hair unless you have the type of face that can distract from the mess on top of your head. I just spent a number of hours watching people, in a non-creepy manner, trying to identify what is popular on campus this season. I don t know if any of you have noticed, but there seems to be an increased number of afros bobbing up and down the Rooiplein and aren t they magnificent? This look requires dedication and effort comparable only to that of Michelle Williams to her career after Destiny s Child. When done right, these afros are majestic in appearance. I have great respect for those who embrace their natural hair. The afro is a legendary hairstyle, the pinnacle of natural hair that has graced the crania of athletes, entertainers and political figures alike. Celebrities like Solange Knowles and Quest Love have added to the growing popularity of afros and, whether you admit it or not, you know you swooned when Corbin Bleu appeared in High School Musical. This hairstyle is steeped in a deep cultural and political history. It represents power, pride and unapologetic confidence. The phrase, the bigger the hair, the longer they stare is spot on. The more mainstream look of the moment is probably the man-bun. Men have had long hair since the beginning of time but, if you believe Buzzfeed, the world only seems to have discovered a few months ago that men can wear their hair bunned on their heads. Only a man-bun can ruffle feathers and make hearts flutter. It makes ladies want to slowly take your hair down and run their fingers through it. Men with the man-bun-and-beard combo need to steer clear of the lighthouse attendant look and stay groomed. The man-bunned hipster is not equivalent to the dishevelled mess riding a longboard down Victoria Street. Long hair has acquired a bad reputation over the years due to crimes against humanity committed by the low ponytail and heavy-metal fans. The man-bun is not just a hairstyle, it s a lifestyle. But in all seriousness, may this hair trend die a painless death before men progress to the man French braid. People on campus have been going crazy with hair dye. We have people with entire pride flags on their heads and it s actually not all bad. Experimenting with your hair colour is a great way to express your personality. If done right, you ll definitely be turning heads for the right reasons. If your new hairstyle did not turn out as planned or if you just want to look a bit different, try a headscarf or a turban. Nothing oozes old Hollywood glamour like a turban. Dear friends, I ask you no I implore you to please take pride in your appearance, especially your crowning glory. You do not need to go to the salon every week, but take care of your hair and keep it healthy and shiny not greasy. Your hair is a statement of style, an affirmation of beauty and an expression of self-love.

13 25 Februarie 2015 DAG & NAG 11 nzync hosts the real State of the Nation Address at AmaZink Poems to power the sunrise Photo: Joan van Dyk JOAN VAN DYK he farce of a State of the Nation Address on Thursday 12 February had its surprisingly ess carnivalesque counterpart in he InZync Poetry session held at mazink. Allow me to take the iberty of sketching this ceremony of ordplay as the ideal parallel universe o the political pity party that was SONA2015. Somehow this room full of etaphors in the heart of Kayamandi eemed more likely to heal the country imping on its last electrical legs (in he words of Toast Coetzer) than what as simultaneously happening in the o called real world. The InZync stage had the great rivilege of carrying the weight of iterary legend Breyten Breytenbach, who shared snippets of new poems and expressed his appreciation of the InZync initiative bringing together the best South Africa has to offer. Toast Coetzer, travel writer at Weg magazine as well as lyricist and frontman of The Buckfever Underground, was similarly impressed with the initiative. He emphasised the importance of writing and of being spellbound, describing poetry as P.T. for your brain. His poetry sketched South Africans as a whole despite our divided country, and caused waves of applause with the refrain we re nice people and nice people pay back the money. It was an impressive line-up with powerful performances by Vuyo Booi and Khadija Heeder, both raising questions about womanhood and what it means to be a post-apartheid South African. InZync, a project of the Stellenbosch Literary Project (SLiP), has been in the business of providing a platform for multilingual expression for four years. For their fourth birthday they are introducing a new feature to their internet presence called Youtube Tuesdays in which those who miss out on the session can experience the force of the spoken word. Furthermore, InZync is spreading its literary wings for the international stage at the Roundhouse Theatre in London, where they will take part in the Last Word Festival. The only real question left to ask is whether London will be able to handle it. This is bound to be an exciting year for InZync, so don t miss out on the chance to witness discourse powering the sunrise. Vyfduisend komberse op die Passenger-trein MIZAN VAN DER MERWE UIT DIE bloute het ek n kaartjie gekry om Passenger se laaste vertoning tydens sy Whisper-toer op Sondag 15 Februarie te gaan kyk. Buiten Wolfmother wat by Oppikoppi opgetree het, was dié my eerste internasionale vertoning en ook my eerste keer by Kirstenbosch. So opgewonde soos ek oor die vertoning was, was ek nie naastenby voorbereid op presies hoe ongelooflik dit sou wees nie. Behalwe vir die ongelooflike mooi venue het die atmosfeer, wat geskep is deur duisende mense met piekniekkomberse en -kospakkies, my asem heeltemal weggeslaan. Vir dae na die vertoning kon ek nie ophou dink aan hoe dit gevoel het om so naby aan die verhoog te staan en oogkontak met Passenger te kon maak en dat elke sekonde van die aand buitengewoon spesiaal was nie. Passenger is bekend daarvoor om lukrake grappies tussendeur sy liedjies te maak en te danke aan die goeie humorsin waarmee ons Suid- Afrikaners geseën is, het oud en jonk gelê soos hulle lag. Wow, I ve never had my own moshpit before! het hy gesê toe hy uiteindelik op die verhoog verskyn en die ses opgewonde skoolmeisies voor die verhoog aanskou. Die gehoor het behoorlik aan sy lippe gehang. Al sy stories was egter nie gelaai met humor nie en daar was op sy versoek n paar minute van doodse stilte terwyl hy die hartseer storie oor sy inspirasie vir sy liedjie New York vertel het. Terwyl ons met ons vol glase rooiwyn voor die verhoog gestaan en saam met 5000 ander mense gesing, gedans, op-en-af-gespring en elke oomblik probeer inneem het, het ek besef dat geld dalk nie liefde kan koop nie, maar dat dit beslis vir onvergeetlike oomblikke soos dié kan sorg. A wide range of people including students, Stellenbosch residents, academics and museum enthusiasts attended this stylish event. Mr Bongani Mgijima, director of the museum, welcomed these guests in their native tongue, speaking English, Xhosa and Afrikaans. Prof Leopold van Huyssteen, acting rector and Vice-Chancellor of the university acted as guest speaker: University means different things to different people at different times, he said, complementing perfectly the title of the exhibition. dit was amazing om hulle live te sien. Past present future was created under the careful eye of Prof Matilda Burden, who was surprised by how many people were unaware of the rich history of the University. She wanted to produce an exhibition that factually stipulated this history. The exhibition is unique in the sense that it takes visitors on a visual journey back in time, showcases a familiar present day and enables them to see a glimpse of the future. The journey back in time illustrates 140 years of university history, including the existence of residences on campus (as well as the burning down of some of those residences), photographs where students and staff all fit into one frame and interesting insight about the fashion choices of a hundred years ago. Wilhelm: Hy het vegetables verkeerd uitgespreek. Veggie-tables. Jordaan: Wat ek wél daaroor wil sê, is dat ons meer mense in die kunste nodig het wat omgee oor hierdie tipe goed en ingelig is oor wat aangaan in ons land. The exhibition then progresses to the present day, where a lightexhibition enables visitors to view the activities on campus. Die Matie Winkel made it possible to compare campus fashion of today to previous generations. A virtual tour of campus is set up to enable alumni to view how campus has grown over the years. Lastly the HOPE project, a long-term plan of the University to benefit society, gives visitors a hopeful glimpse of the future. Prof van Huyssteen stated that the museum helps us to understand our world, and I agree wholeheartedly. Whether you are a history enthusiast or looking for more insight on the campus where we spend most of our time, Past present future should not be missed. REVIEWS Shortstraw debuts at no.1 Youthless by Shortstraw I VE ALWAYS experienced Shortstraw as the epitome of a South African festival band: sharp beats, fun lyrics, all around feel good, groovy music. Their infectious indie-pop sound will have your feet moving, hips shaking and head bobbing the perfect music for a summer weekend. Their latest album shows the maturing of their sound. Youthless, just like any maturing teen, experiences a myriad of mood swings, giving you the most enjoyable musical whip lash, with diverse influences ranging from Dune Rats, White Stripes and even Bon Iver, as can be heard on Heaps Keen, High School and Good Winter respectively. But fear not, their representative indie-pop rhythms are still present, albeit with new buddies such as punk-style anthems and even some ballads all brilliantly telling the story of happy and sad times (even the sad songs will make you smile). Look out for some smooth jazz sounds in House and take it back to the 80s with catchy lyrics in Say Anything and OMG. Sheer 90s punk pop brilliance and f*ck-the-system attitude (in a slightly ironic fashion) can be enjoyed whilst grooving along to the awesome guitar riffs in High School. The classic nostalgic beach vibe so often created by the boys in live performance is welcomed back on tracks like Curtains and Campus Life. Ultimately, Youthless consists of 15 fun songs which prove its debut as Number 1 on itunes and set a high bar for South African music this year.. Dié film volg die spanningbelaaide getroude lewe van Margaret (Amy Adams) en Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz). Walter besef die ikoniese potensiaal van Margaret se portrette en begin (teen haar wil) Margaret se skilderye onder sy eie naam verkoop. Margaret se situasie plaas haar onder soveel sielkundige spanning dat sy haar begin verbeel dat sy mense sien met oë so groot soos dié van die kinders wat sy elke dag ter behoud van haar man se kunstenaarsreputasie skilder. Die toneel waarin gewone mense groot oë kry is byna die enigste bewys dat Tim Burton by Big Eyes betrokke is. Verdere subtiele tekens strek vanaf onnatuurlike heldergroen landskappe tot abstrakte uitrustings en geboue. Die kyker bly wonder: Wat is geskiedenis en wat is fiksie? Burton dra met Big Eyes by tot die oordonderende feministiese temas wat deesdae die loket oorheers. n Belangrike laaste wenk: Weerstaan die versoeking om die lokprent van Big Eyes te kyk voordat jy die fliek gesien het dit verklap byna al die hoogtepunte van die storie. Karin Hammond Who is the real enigma? The Imitation Game THERE has been a lot of hype around The Imitation Game, especially since it was nominated for eight Oscars at the 87th Academy Awards and walked away with the Oscar for the best adapted screenplay. Despite some historical inaccuracies, this biopic lives up to the hype.the film revolves around British mathematician Alan Turing and his efforts to break the Enigma code. What started out as yet another film about WW2 quickly became a story about the comparison between human and machine. From the opening line to the closing moments, this film was absolutely beautiful and works as a cohesive whole. Cumberbatch s acting is superb in portraying. Turing and turning him into a true enigma. The way the film shifts emphasis throughout the film keeps you enthralled until the end. In this film, Turing himself becomes the enigma, and you are the judge of his imitation game. Is he human, or a machine programmed by society? This is not simply a biopic or suspenseful drama, but it s also a human interest story that deals with Turing s homosexuality. The crux of the film is shown when Turing asks: Just because something thinks differently from you, does that mean it s not thinking? There has been a lot of criticism about the historical accuracy of the film, regarding the portrayal of certain key events, Turing s relationship with Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley) and Turing s eventual death. Whether or not you like historical biopics, The Imitation Game is a fantastic piece of work that deals with multiple issues at various levels through a surprisingly human story. Photo: JANNES REDDIG Top eight to battle it out for final spots in residence hockey Maties summer league hockey on to second round-robin phase It s not just frisbee WOLFGANG ERB At the recent sports day in the Neelsie, the question that players at the Ultimate booth most frequently had to answer was: But it s just Frisbee, right? No. Ultimate is a highly competitive, run-until-youdrop, action packed sport that involves amazing athleticism and a great spirit amongst the players. In South Africa, Ultimate is mostly played in a mixed gender format (four men and three women on the field per team). The basic rules of Ultimate are very simple: 1. It is a non-contact sport. 2. You are not allowed to move if you are holding the disk. 3. To score you have to catch the disk in the end zone, similar to the scoring zone in rugby. 4. You are required to referee yourself. The fact that players must referee themselves stops them from taking a dive or faking an injury, as there is no referee to watch. This is what makes Ultimate the unique sport that it is. Where many universities do not yet have an Ultimate team, South African Ultimate has an established competitive scene on a regional and national level that encompasses all age groups. At present, Maties Ultimate is participating in the CTFDA summer league where they have played 3 games so far, of which they have won 1 and lost 2. The most recent match was played on Monday, 16 February against UCT. UCT was able to better cope with the strong side wind that prevailed throughout most of the game, allowing them to take the win. The big goal for Maties, however, is the South African Ultimate National Championships which will be hosted from the 25th to the 27th of April in Bloemfontein. Training three times a week and playing league games on a fourth, the first team aims to place amongst the top four at Nationals, where the best teams from around the country will meet to battle it out for the title. SEBASTIAN POTGIETER he Steinhoff Maties Summer League Hockey progressed into its second round-robin phase on Thursday 19 February. After completing the first phase of the tournament, teams were reshuffled into four new pools based on their log position in the first round-robin. The top two teams of each of the four pools are placed in a new pool together. It will be these teams that contest for a spot in the final set, to take place in March. The new men s A Pool for the second round-robin consists of Helshoogte, Dagbreek, Libertas PSO, Goldfields, Majuba, Wilgenhof, Simonsberg, and Eendrag Summer League champions, Helderberg, were not able to progress to the men s A Pool after drawing in a tough pool alongside Libertas PSO and Simonsberg. With regards to the women s A Pool, Aristea I, Medies, Heemstede, Old Students I, Old Students II, Erica, Olympus, and Academia made the cut. The first of the fixtures kicked off in the men s A division with Libertas PSO taking on Majuba, both of whom had placed first in their respective groups at the end of the first roundrobin. It was Majuba who got off to the better start as they regularly got in behind the Libertas defence and seemed to be causing the PSO men some problems, leaving them battling to maintain their defensive structure. Despite the best attacking efforts of the men from Majuba, it was Libertas that opened the scoring through Marno Stigling with a powerful slap of the ball past a sprawled-out Majuba goalkeeper. This did not seem to deter Majuba as they persisted with a useful overhead technique which on numerous occasions led to some problems around the Libertas defensive circle. It was only Majuba s lack in finishing capability that hampered them as numerous opportunities went begging. Libertas took advantage of this and were able to do some attacking of their own with good interplay in and around the Majuba defensive circle. The pressure soon paid off as Libertas added a further goal through Aidan Morris who neatly slotted the ball into the back of the goalbox. Libertas added two further goals to their tally with newly recruited striker Dave Agar causing all kinds of problems for the Majuba defence. Majuba were able to drag a goal back, but it was not enough to spark a turn around and the game ended in a 4 1 victory and bonus point for Libertas, for scoring four goals, the scoreline perhaps not accurately reflecting the quality with which Majuba played. In some of the other fixtures, a strong Dagbreek side squared up against Wilgenhof in what was to be a hockey spectacle, since both sides boast quality players. Both sides had finished first in their respective first round-robin groups, with Dagbreek having conceded the least goals thus far in the tournament and Wilgenhof, along with Libertas, having scored the most goals in the first round-robin with 11 goals. The match was, however, one-way traffic as Dagbreek ran rampant while maintaining their excellent defensive record, emerging as 4 0 victors and collecting a bonus point on the way. Dagbreek striker Jacques Olivier was on particular form as he secured a hattrick of goals after beating the Wilgenhof goalkeeper three times to claim the lion s share of his team s goals. The Summer League matches take place from Monday to Friday in the evenings, with 8 teams in both the men s and women s A division battling for a spot in the final set for mid-march. The matches now go into the second phase of the round-robin tournament before the contenders of the finals are selected.
