2 Introduction The FY 2012 First and Second Quarter CP-34 ACTEDS Catalog features online courses for librarians involved in public service activities such as reference, marketing, library instruction, and community engagement; and, for librarians working in technical areas such as resource description, vendor partnerships, and data analysis. With the recent recommendation by the Testing Committee to approve RDA, and, with full implementation expected in 2013, several courses are included on RDA. Building on the theme at the Army Library Training Institute of user assessment, library planning, and evaluation, the Fall catalog offers courses in survey development, program planning, social media strategy, and data analysis as well as an opportunity to compete for a spot at the Service Quality Evaluation Academy, an ACRL sponsored intensive 5-day program focusing on qualitative and quantitative analysis. The coverage includes: essential information resources for adults and youth in response to disasters, emergencies, and pandemics; evidence-based health, science, and communication resources used by responders and professional in variety of emergency situations; and, professional resources and toolkits that can be used to develop disaster preparedness and response plans. This course will cover how RDA s rules are structured, its basis in FRBR (Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records), overarching principles under which catalogers are to work, and RDA s core data elements. 5 Managing Your Information Vendors Effectively 4 Jan 3 Feb This online course will focus on building strong vendor partnerships enabling libraries to get the most out of the resources they purchase. The course will cover major aspects of working with information vendors: discovery and evaluation of resources, contracting, piloting, implementation, marketing and promotion, and managing contracts. An Introduction to Survey Design 4 Jan 3 Feb This online workshop will cover the elements that contribute to an effective, user-friendly survey that provides reliable, usable results. Participants will create an online survey and get feedback on how to improve it. Topics include survey planning, ethical considerations, survey samples and response rate, writing good survey questions, introductions and cover letters, question formats and response options, and drafting and testing a survey questionnaire. 6 Resource Description and Access: An Introduction to RDA, FBR, and Linked Data University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ($299) 8 Week Online Workshop 16 Jan 9 Mar This eight week online workshop will first introduce participants to the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and FRAD (Functional Requirements for Authority Data) conceptual models that underlie RDA. It will go on to introduce participants to the structure of RDA, the use of the online RDA Toolkit, how to catalog using RDA, and how to create RDA MARC records. It will also show how RDA may be applied in enhanced database structures and in the Linked Data environment. The workshop is intended for people with a working knowledge of AACR2 and MARC, but not necessarily FRBR or RDA. Two Weeks 23 Jan - 23 Feb The two week National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) program provides an introduction to archival principles and techniques for individuals who work with personal papers, as well as those who work with the records of public and private institutions and organizations. It is intended to help archivists acquire basic knowledge about caring for archival materials and making them available. The Institute concentrates on the following basic archival functions: Acquisition of archival material Appraisal and disposition Arrangement and description Preservation Reference and access Public programs Other topics include the management of archival institutions; administration of special types of archival materials, such as photographs and electronic records; funding; and ethics. The program includes lectures, discussions, workshops, a full day of activities at the Library of Congress, and tours of various units of the National Archives and Records Administration. 8 Deciding with Data ALA/ACRL ($195) Online Course 4 Weeks Requires 3-5 hours per week 13 Feb 9 Mar In this four-week asynchronous course, participants will learn about the lifecycle of library data from setting up its collection to making decisions using this information. The course will cover plotting commonly gathered statistics-- over time and on the same chart-- in order to visualize trends, an introduction to e-resources use statistics, an introduction to using Google Analytics in libraries, and an introduction to the analysis of library collections using ILS data. Focused on quantitative data, this course is designed for librarians interested in gathering and analyzing library statistics to aid in decision-making. The course will examine: the definition of space relative to long range goals, vision and mission statements; ideas to gather support for a project; the creation of flexible library spaces that support multiple functions; cost saving ideas; the integration of technology into physical environments; creative ways to make spaces interesting, open, and inviting; and, compliance issues and practicalities. 9 Marketing Your Library 1-31 Mar Marketing is the process of communicating with users and potential users to determine their needs, designing services to meet those needs, and informing users about these services. In this four week online course, participants will learn the basic marketing definitions and concepts, and develop a user-centered approach to marketing that can be customized to the students individual libraries. The class will draw on marketing lessons learned from outside the library world, as well as proven marketing successes in public, academic and special libraries. Details: Competency: Content Organization (Resource Description) Service Quality Evaluation Academy ACRL ($1,500) Onsite Training: New Orleans, LA Five days Mar The Service Quality Evaluation Academy is an intensive 5-day program that focuses on both qualitative and quantitative methods for collecting and analyzing library service quality data. The academy addresses the community-wide need for new strategies and methods of library assessment by pursuing the following goals: 1) enhance the pool of librarians with advanced 30 September 2011 Page 9
10 assessment skills by teaching qualitative and quantitative methods for assessing and improving outcomes and service quality; 2) create an infrastructure for libraries to design and develop outcome-based library assessment programs; 3) build capacity for assessment through advocating its use and providing model programs and projects to the broader library and museum communities. The academy is designed for librarians across library types with a strong commitment to quality assessment efforts. Library directors are invited to nominate candidates for the class and submit the ACTEDS form together with the following materials to complete the application package: 1. Nomination letter from library director; 2. A half-page description of a possible assessment project including research questions of primary interest, or a brief statement of interest (250 words) emphasizing assessment activities; 3. A curriculum vitae. Members of the selection committee composed of ARL and CARL library directors will review and select candidates submitted by Army Library Program/ACTEDS.
