However, besides reading the textbook, students MUST log onto MyPsychLab every week to view video clips, and take exams online. Those who fail to log onto the website each week, will be viewed as inactive in the class and might be dropped by the instructor. Catalog Description Welcome to Introductory Psychology! This course introduces major concepts, problems and methods that psychologists use to investigate and understand the human mind. Major topics of study include the history and origins of psychology, introductory statistical concepts, motivation, emotion, biological determinants of behavior, environmental factors in behavior, psychological tests and measurements, and learning and personality theory. Pass/No Pass Option. (UC/CSU) Advisory: Eligibility for EWRT 1A or ESL 5 advised. Required Textbook Psychology An Exploration, 2ed Authors: Saundra K. Ciccarelli and J. Noland White ISBN: CICCARELLI PSYCHOLOGY ALC + MYPSYCHLAB PKG (SUMMER 2013) Net price $ Note: this ISBN is for the textbook and access code to the website MyPsychLab in which the ENTIRE Psy 1 course will occur. The textbook and access code are available through the publishers s website custom built for you: Pick your campus: De Anza College. Pick your course: Psych 1 De Anza Summer Once you are on MyPsychLab you will also have access to an etext of the required textbook. It is your choice whether to read the book online or with your hard copy. Please be careful: DO NOT buy any access code that you find anywhere. It probably will NOT work to get you online with this course and will just cause frustration and waisted money.
2 For help at anytime, please contact Pearson Education Final Course Grade: will be based on Taking chapter exams for all the assigned chapters. I will be checking to see that you are taking them each week. (If you take All of the chp. exams, you will earn 50 points. If you only take some of them, you will earn 0 points.) Paper #1 on terms on the Brain (worth 50 points) Paper #2 on terms from Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning (worth 50 points) Paper #3 Research Paper on a Mental Disorder (worth 50 points) TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE FOR THE COURSE = 200 Be prepared to spend at least 15 hours per week using and studying course materials. How to Get Started-Watch Your Deadlines! 1. Register for the Psychology 1 course at De Anza College. 2. Complete the Online Orientation through the De Anza College Distant Learning website and submit the Student Information Form by 5:00 pm Friday, July 5. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. Be ready to give your address that you will use ALL quarter. All correspondence with your instructor will happen with that same address, so please keep it the same. Online Orientation may be found at: 3. Purchase the course text and materials. 4. Register onto the MyPsychLab website by 5:00 pm Friday, July 5 using your access code. This is where the Psy 1 course happens completely ONLINE. The course does NOT happen on Catalyst. If you do not make that deadline, you might be dropped from the course. 5. Start your studies. Read Text Chp.s Students can read the hard copy or the etext. Summer quarter goes quickly. Please be self motivated and make sure to read 2 to 3 chp.s per week. View Videos On the MyPsychLab website, click on the Video Series. Click Enter. View each video clip that pertains to the text chp. you are reading. Exams (worth 50 points total) After reading each text chp. and viewing the corresponding video clips, students should take the chp. exam. I will be checking to see that students take these exams. Students who take ALL the chp. exams will earn 50 points in the class. Students who take only some of the exams, or none of the exams will earn 0 points.
3 Submit 3 Papers via to the Instructor to lindahurkmans@sbcglobal.net In the subject line of the , please write, for example Kate Johnson s Psych 1 Paper #1 Please use a doc. or pdf format or simply copy and paste the paper right into the body of the . All papers should be a minimum of 3 pages and a maximum of 5 pages, font size of 12, spell-checked, college level paper. They are due by 5:00pm on their due dates. Please cite at least 4 resources that you used on a separate bibliography page. Use your text and at least 3 other resources, such as: Papers are worth a maximum of 50 points each. Late work will NOT be accepted!! Psych 1 Paper #1 DUE: Friday 7/12 On the Brain. (worth a maximum of 50 points) Explaining the terms: Hindbrain, midbrain, forebrain, glia cells, what are neurons and how do they communicate, presynaptic neuron, postsynaptic neuron, synaptic gap, dendrites, soma, axon, myelin sheath, axon potential, neurotransmitters, list 3 main neurotransmitters that science has discovered and explain what they do for us. Use your text reading, videos, flashcards and any other resources on MyPsychLab to help you explain these terms well. Psych 1 Paper #2 DUE: Friday 7/26 on Classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning (worth a maximum of 50 points) Explaining the terms: Ivan Pavlov, neutral stimulus, unconditioned stimulus, unconditioned response (reflex), conditioned stimulus, conditioned response. Please apply Classical Conditioning to one example (such as Pavlov s dogs getting classically conditioned to salivate to a metronome, or someone developing a phobia. You can choose your own example.). Explain. B.F. Skinner, positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment, shaping. Please apply Operant Conditioning to one example (such as how to train a puppy, or how to successfully quit smoking. You can choose your own example). Explain. Use your text reading, videos, flashcards and any other resources on MyPsychLab to help you explain these terms well. Psych 1 Paper #3 DUE: Friday 8/9 on a Mental Disorder (worth a maximum of 50 points): Write a research paper on one of the Mental Disorders that was OR was NOT covered in this course. You may choose which Mental Disorder you will explore in this paper. Describe
4 the symptoms, typical onset (do we know from research what age this disorder typically begins?), prognosis (for this given disorder, what are we looking at? How will it progress? How long will it last? How does it typically respond to treatment), and what are effective treatments? Why did you choose this topic (ie, you saw it in a movie, or it has affected someone you know, or you always wondered about it, etc.) Discuss the ramifications for friends or family members of a person who has this disorder. How are they impacted? Are there any misconceptions among the general public about this disorder? Need help with the Paper If you are having trouble please flag your with questions on the assignment or help needed with the Psy 1 Online Paper or something to that effect. That way I don t just think you are submitting your assignment and fail to respond quickly. Extra Credit No Extra Credit is given in this class. Expectations Those discovered to be cheating (unauthorized collaboration, plagiarizing on papers, etc.) will be given an F grade for the course and may be expelled from the college. I will be checking them. -Submit Paper #3 on a Mental Disorder by Friday 8/9 Final grades will be available via MyPortal on the De Anza College website once posted by faculty. FINAL COURSE GRADE BREAKDOWN: A = total points B = C = D = F = 124 and below Students, please be responsible for completing your work according to the above dates. My advice to any distant learner is to try not to let the work pile up and then feel overwhelmed. Just take it day by day.
