1 UVI Results from the University of Delaware National Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity (FY ) This report provides FY11 information for the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) submitted to the Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity. The Delaware study most measures how much departmental activities cost in relation to the revenue they generate. Costs are measured in terms of direct instructional expenditures per credit hour. It is important to recognize that credit hours represent in many ways a measure of revenue from instructional activity more than the work required to deliver that instruction indirect expenditures are not considered. The metric for productivity in this study is revenue from grants and public service and is measured in dollars per full-time equivalent tenured and tenure-track faculty member. Program Cost Direct Instructional Expenditures ($) Students Credit hours (or FTE conversion) Program Productivity Expenditures for Research and Public Services($) FTE tenure or Tenure track Faculty Program results are reported by the U.S. Department of Education Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) code. The Study adopts some specialized definitions to facilitate these comparisons. These definitions are available at Data provided in this report adhere to these guidelines. Study Variables Type of Metric A: Number of institutions in classification Comparison Group Size 1: Total full-time equivalent (FTE) faculty Size of Faculty 2: Tenured/tenure-track faculty as % of total faculty Faculty Composition 3: Total FTE instructional faculty Size of Instructional Faculty 4: Direct instructional expenditures/student credit hour (SCH) ($) Cost 5: Direct instructional cost/fte student($) Cost 6: Personnel cost as % of direct instructional expenditure Cost 7: Research expenditures /FTE tenured & tenure-track faculty($) Productivity (Revenue) 8: Public service expenditures /FTE tenured & tenure-track faculty($) Productivity (Revenue) 9: Research & public service expenditures /FTE tenured & tenure-track faculty($) Productivity (Revenue) Data for the previous fiscal year are submitted to the study each year in January. Comparison data become available the following summer.

2 Given that this study is national in scope, it is important to keep in mind that data from comparison institutions reported in this study represent institutions from across the country in various states and locales. Cost of living and other expenses may vary by region. Participating institutions can vary by year. UVI participated in the Delaware study for the first time in 2011, reporting data from fiscal year The Office the Institutional Research and Planning was asked to assist in the data collection and submission. As UVI registered relatively late and it was agreed that only data from the College of Science and Mathematics would be collected and submitted. The office of Institutional research and Planning and the College of Science and Mathematics faced a major challenge while identifying the research and public service expenditures. They discovered that various expenditures were recorded in BANNER at the component or at college level and not at the department or program of instruction level which made the identification and allocation of the expenditures a posteriori nearly impossible. The same difficulties were encountered while attempting to identify some of the direct instructional expenses. At this point the Office of Institutional Research and Planning recommend that the recording of the direct instructional expenditures, as well as those of research and public service be reviewed before participating again in the Delaware National Study of Instructional Cost and Productivity. The data collection and submission process not consumed a great deal of hours from the Office of Institutional Research and Planning s regular staff but also required the hiring of a temporary office assistant.
