Changes to the Structure of the 20-credit General Bachelor of Arts Approved by Brantford Divisional Council (March 25, 2013), SBE Council (April 11, 2013), Faculty of Science Divisional Council (March 15, 2013), and Faculty of Arts Divisional Council (April 12, 2013) 1. The 20-credit General BA Department / Program: Faculty of Arts Motion: That the 20-credit B.A. structure be simplified, from three categories to two, with no mention of General in either category: the higher category remains the same (Bachelor of Arts, Honours, Discipline[s]); the lower one removes General from the current wording (Bachelor of Arts, Discipline[s]). Both 20-credit degrees allow for Options and Minors. Approved by the Faculty of Arts Curriculum Committee, April 5, 2013 (unanimous) Approved by the Faculty of Arts Divisional Council, April 12, 2013 (unanimous) Preamble: A similar proposal received FOA Divisional Council approval last year, with a slightly different model: FOA APPROVED CHANGES LAST YEAR, (CHANGES IDENTIFIED IN BOLD) overall and major(s) Bachelor of Arts, Discipline(s) overall and < 5.0 major Bachelor of Arts This change did not receive the approval of the Senate Academic Planning Committee because it was felt that a change of this nature should be uniform across the Laurier constituencies that offer the B.A., i.e. Science, Economics, Brantford, and Arts, and at the time it was not possible to gain university-wide approval for these changes. The Associate Deans went back to the drawing board this year. The Arts Curriculum Committee s new proposal gained widespread approval across these constituencies. All have now passed this motion in their curriculum committees and divisional councils; if Arts passes it at its Divisional Council, the proposal will go to the next Senate Academic Planning meeting, with the intention of having the change take effect in the academic year. Those of you who read carefully will notice that this year s proposal is very close to last year s: another year, another set of individuals sitting on curriculum committees, and a different
result. The difference is that it removes the third category of 20-credit BA ( 5.0 overall and < 5.0 major). This difference is meaningful for two reasons: (a) it accords disciplinary status to all 20-credit degrees, and (b) it discourages students from taking 20 credits to gain a degree without the General attached to it. Description of Proposed Change: EXISTING CALENDAR DESCRIPTION overall and major Bachelor of Arts, General, Discipline(s) overall and < 5.0 major Bachelor of Arts, General PROPOSED MODEL overall and 7.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts, Honours, Discipline(s) overall and major Bachelor of Arts, Discipline(s) Rationale for Proposed Change: To distinguish more clearly between 15- and 20-credit BAs, and to reward 20-credit students who fulfill GPA requirements by granting them a degree that highlights their specialization(s). At present, students who complete 20 credits with an overall GPA of 5.0 and a major GPA of 7.0 graduate with an honours degree in a discipline or combination of disciplines. Any student who does not achieve these specific GPA requirements graduates with a General BA, with or without disciplinary designation, depending on their specific GPA. General currently applies to the three non-honours degrees, two of which require 20-credits of work. Alignment with University Academic Plan: The proposed changes adhere to the Plan. Impact on Program Learning Outcomes: As the proposed changes are tied to the language and exit requirements of the existing degree structures, there will be no impact on Program Learning Outcomes.
FACULTY OF SCIENCE Curriculum & Program Committee Submission to Senate Academic Planning Committee meeting: April 1, 2013 Approved by the Science Curriculum Committee: Tuesday, January 29, 2013 and Tuesday, March 5, 2013 Approved by Science Divisional Council: Friday, March 15, 2013 Motion: THAT Science Divisional Council approve the recommendation that the progression and graduation requirements for the honours BSc program is raised to a minimum GPA of 5.0 in each of the honours subject(s) of specialization and a minimum overall GPA of 5.0. This honours BSc program regulation applies to the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and Computer Science. THAT Science Divisional Council approve the recommendation that the progression and graduation requirements for the honours BA program is raised to a minimum GPA of 5.0 in each of the honours subject(s) of specialization and a minimum overall GPA of 5.0. This honours BA program regulation applies to the departments of Biology, Mathematics and Physics and Computer Science.
Proposal for Changes to Graduation Requirements: Addressing the 20 credit General degree Motion: To approve the removal of the 20 credit General BA/BSc degrees and replace it with a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science with discipline degree, with the graduation GPAs noted below. Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Science (Psychology, Kinesiology) Existing GPA overall and 7.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Honours, Discipline(s) overall and major Bachelor of Arts/Science, General, Discipline overall Bachelor of Arts/Science, General Proposed GPA overall and 7.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Honours, Discipline(s) overall ( 5.0 major) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Discipline(s) Bachelor of Science (Health Sciences) Existing GPA overall Bachelor of Science, Honours, Discipline(s) overall Bachelor of Science, General overall Bachelor of Science, General Proposed GPA overall Bachelor of Science, Honours, Discipline(s) overall Bachelor of Science, General Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Science (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science) Existing GPA overall and 4.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Honours, Discipline(s) Proposed GPA overall and 5.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Honours, Discipline(s) overall and 4.0 major(s) Bachelor of Arts/Science, Discipline(s)
Addressing the 20-credit "General" BA The current problem: Currently there are four types of Laurier B.A.s that students can earn, three of which require 20 credits of work and one which requires only 15. Three of those degrees are General B.A.s, and a General B.A. applies to students who graduate with 15 or 20 credits. We need to distinguish more clearly students who earn a 15-credit BA from those who earn a 20-credit BA, as well as General and non-general degrees. The process: Associate deans and program reps met in person and online throughout this academic year to address this problem and arrive at a mutually-acceptable solution. Proposed solution: Accepted by curriculum committees from Arts, Science, Brantford, and Economics: 1 - Keep the current 20-credit honours & the 15-credit General BA unchanged 2 - Reduce the two other 20-credit degrees to one 3 - Call that second degree simply a "B.A." 4 - Allow Options, and minors, for both 20-credit degrees 5 - Allow the second 20-credit degree to include a discipline Existing overall and major Bachelor of Arts, General, Discipline overall and < 5.0 major Bachelor of Arts, General Proposed (change identified in bold) overall and major Bachelor of Arts, Discipline(s) Recommendation: That the four Divisional Councils support the proposed solution at which four Laurier constituencies have arrived this year.
Information for SBE Council Meeting Beginning in 2007, the University instituted a 3 year general degree with no major and at the same time introduced a new honours degree that required a 5 GPA overall and a 5 GPA in the subject to proceed but a 5 GPA overall and a 7 GPA in the subject to graduate. This divergence between the progression and the graduation requirements has proven to a difficulty in the University s regulations. In response, this Department introduced two degrees: Honours Economics with possibility of joint with Accounting or Financial Management required a 6 GPA in Economics in first year to proceed to second and then a 7 GPA in Economics to proceed in each year. Honours Applied Economics which required only a 5 GPA in Economics to progress each year but a 7 GAP in EC to graduate. Students who did not receive the 7 to graduate could elect to take a General BA in Applied Economics. There has been a move to restrict the General BA to the 3 year degree and allow students to graduate with a 5 overall GPA and a 5 GPA in the subject with a BA (no honours). This has gone through Arts, Science and Brantford. Students who have the 5 GPA overall but not the subject 5 GPA could elect to receive a BA with no subject Motion: Economics students who have at least 5.0 GPA overall and at least a 5.0 GPA but not a 7. 0 GPA in Economics and have completed the course requirements for Applied Economics will be eligible for a BA in Applied Economics. Proposed solution: Accepted by curriculum committees from Arts, Science, Brantford, and Economics: 1 - Keep the current 20-credit honours & the 15-credit General BA unchanged 2 - Reduce the two other 20-credit degrees to one 3 - Call that second degree simply a "B.A." 4 - Allow Options, and minors, for both 20-credit degrees 5 - Allow the second 20-credit degree to include a discipline
Existing overall and major Bachelor of Arts, General, Discipline overall and < 5.0 major Bachelor of Arts, General Proposed (change identified in bold) overall and major Bachelor of Arts, Discipline(s) Recommendation: That the four Divisional Councils support the proposed solution at which four Laurier constituencies have arrived this year.
