3 Centro di Cultura Scientifica Alessandro Volta Science on Lake Como s shores Centro di Cultura Scientifica Alessandro Volta (Center for Scientific Culture Alessandro Volta) is an original organization, created since 1983 by Local Public Administrations and ten Universities in Lombardy Region, with the aim of providing scientists all over the world with a distinctive environment for fostering scientific communication, interaction and debate. Headquartered on the Lake Como s shores - one of the most beautiful areas in northern Italy, easily accessible from four international airports and characterized by a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, art and culture - the Center represents the ideal location to hold scientific conferences, seminars, workshops, summer schools and other scientific events that require the availability of a charming and peaceful atmosphere, where creativity and exchange of ideas are to be favored and encouraged. The Center organizes on average 30 events per year, attracting several thousands of scientists and researchers, working n a wide range of fields and disciplines. The scientific program emerges as requests are received from Universities and Research Organizations around the world - either spontaneously or stimulated by the Center s Scientific Board giving rise to a diverse and multi-disciplinary work agenda specially conducive to additional fruitful interactions among researchers, possibly across fields boundaries. This melting-pot effect may also lead - as happened several times in the past - to the birth of new challenging endeavors or collaborations. Effective conference management services - charged at their costs, with no profit added - are available to free scientists from the many details of events organization, allowing them to concentrate on the important aspects of their initiatives. Experienced staff will provide support in the selection of the perfect venue among the extensive choice offered by the Lake Como area, in the assistance to participants and speakers, in the coordination of local suppliers as well as in efficiently accommodating any other request, including last-minute ones, as may be needed. Applications may be received at any time throughout the year, by contacting the Center s Secretariat. 4 About us Centro di Cultura Scientifica Alessandro Volta (Center for Scientific Culture Alessandro Volta) is a non profit association, located in the beautiful setting of Lake Como. The mission of the Center is to promote and support scientific activities on the territory of Como, including the organization of conferences, seminars, workshops, exhibitions and other events. The Center has been incorporated in 1983 by five local Public Administrations, that appoint the Center s Board of Trustees. 5 Scientific Programme The Scientific Programme of Centro di Cultura Scientifica Alessandro Volta is formed every year, as requests are received and managed by the Scientific Board. Below we give an overview of the diverse landscape of the activities that have been organized with us, focusing in particular on the ones that evolved in permanent initiatives or that generated specially challenging scientific endeavors. Graduate and Post-Graduate Schools The Center organizes a number of graduate and post-graduate schools, in cooperation with leading universities and research institutions, at national and international level. Notable examples are the Como Programme of the School of Architecture of the University of Southern California that each spring offers a full semester of classes taught by a combination of USC faculty and noteworthy Italian architects or the SIGRAV Graduate School in Contemporary Relativity and Gravitational Physics, organized by the Italian Society of General Relativity and Gravitational Physics, offered to PhD students and young Post-Docs who are interested in widening their knowledge in the fields of Physical Cosmology, Relativistic Astrophysics, General Relativity, Experimental Gravity and the Modern Quantum Theories of Gravitation. Students have classroom and studio space in the Villa Olmo, a beautiful 19th century neoclassical building overlooking Lake Como. Accommodation is provided in comfortable facilities downtown Como, thanks to special covenants and agreements reached by the Center with local providers. International Scientific Cooperation In 1995, thanks to the effort and contribution of several renowned scientists from Italy and abroad, the Center started the Landau Network-Centro Volta initiative for international scientific cooperation (LNCV). LNCV operates as a network aimed at the conception, design and execution of research projects focused on the application of scientific knowledge to issues of intrinsically global nature. Examples of topics addressed by LNCV are: security and international policy; non-proliferation, NBC disarmament and arms control matters; regional stability in the Middle East, South Asia, and the Korean Peninsula; water, energy and food security. LNCV cooperates with relevant international bodies such as for instance UNESCO, FAO or IAEA and is mainly supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Commission, and several Italian and US Foundations, on a project basis. Environmental Sciences The Center s Environmental Sciences department aims at investigating innovative solutions for the improvement, safeguard and restoration of environmental assets in the territory of Como. The department steadily and thoroughly monitors the development of crucial environmental issues, considering each of them from multiple point of views: from the effects on the ecosystem, to social implications and economic impact. In particular, it promotes initiatives consistent with latest scientific and technological advances and with current environmental legislation, thanks to the continuous update and interaction with a network of experts coming from universities and research centers across the world. Dissemination initiatives aimed at favoring the scientific debate and raising public awareness, are conducted by means of interdisciplinary conferences and workshops, and publication of periodic reports and monographic volumes. Innovation and economic development The Center conducts several initiatives aimed at promoting knowledge and technology transfer from universities and research centers to innovative applications in industrial enterprises and public administrations. In particular, teams of researchers and engineers engaged from both industry and academy are set up to support enterprises and public administrations along the crucial steps of the innovation process: formulation of new ideas through contacts and exchange of information with universities and research institutions; elaboration of innovative projects, including the identification of best scientific and technological solutions; protection of property rights and patents management; market analysis, for evaluating the competitive advantages generated by S&T research and for implementing mechanisms to preserve these advantages over time.
