3 Chapter 1 Upgrade firmware of NSA-220 series 1 General purpose This document is designed for the cases of instructing a detail firmware ver upgrade procedures by using USB flash drive in ZyXEL NSA-220. Before doing this procedure to upgrade firmware v3.12 in your NSA-220 series, please refer the troubleshooting guide for recovering firmware in your NSA-220 series first and then go through this document to upgrade firmware v3.12. Preparation for firmware recovery procedure in NSA-220 series: 1. Use a one-partition USB Key including USB version firmware for NSA-220 to recover the firmware. Detail procedure will be described as following section. I. Prepare the USB Key Prepare a Windows-based PC or laptop and a one-partition USB flash. Then, use your NSA to format USB flash drive or third party utility to format it. After successfully installing disk utility, please plug the USB flash into the PC or laptop. II. Plug your USB flash drive in the USB port of NSA-220 (PLUS), and then go to GUI to check your external volume and see if your NSA-220 (PLUS) can detect the USB flash drive. 3

4 III. Then, press the button of create an external volume to format your USB flash drive. IV. Please assign the file system as FAT32 and then process the volume creation in your USB flash drive.

5 There is another way to format your flash drive if you have third party tool. Please make sure to create a non-bootable FAT32 partition on the USB flash. Please make sure you have back up data in your USB flash drive before formatting procedure. Note: It would be better to use NSA to format your flash drive if the USB flash drive formatted by Windows explorer and fail to upgrade. V. Copy the file, 312XXXXX_for_2.30_or_above.exe, for example: 312AFBC0_for_2.30_or_above.exe, for recovering usage to the USB Disk and extract the USB Key files to the USB Disk. You will see three items, nsa220_fw, nsa220_check_file, usb_key_func.sh in USB flash as below figure. Then, please make sure these three items in the root of USB flash drive. (You will find usb_key_func.sh inside the folder nsa220_fw and outside folder, please do not copy or move them, just keep them in original location)

6 Use the USB Key to recover firmware in NSA-220 series: 1. Shut down NSA-220 system. Please make sure the NSA-220 series is power-off. Or you can press and hold power button and release it until hearing a beep sound and wait about 20 seconds until system completely power off. 2. Disconnect all network interfaces on NSA-220 series. In other words, please plug out all the cable connected to network interface. 3. As for hard drive(s), user can leave it inside the NSA-220 series. There is no impact while doing the firmware recovery procedure. Disconnected the network interface 4. Plug the USB Key (Created in section 1) into USB port in NSA-220 series which is in power-off status. 5. Power on NSA-220 system by pressing Power Button.

7 6. After powering on, NSA-220 series will start to upgrade FW. Users can see SYS led is blinking Orange while NSA-220 series upgrading firmware. (Note: Please DO NOT power off the device during the recovery process as it may causes hardware damage. SYS LED will be blinking orange while firmware upgrading USB flash drive 7. After the firmware upgrading is done, NSA-220 system will shutdown automatically 8. After recovering the firmware from USB flash drive, please power on the NSA-220 system and then users should login the GUI to manage the system. If yes, then it means the firmware upgrading is successfully or please re-try the above procedures to recover the firmware in NSA-220 system.

8 Chapter 2 Troubleshooting 2 Troubleshooting 1. What should I do if users encounter failure in recovering firmware from USB flash drive? Answer: Please use your NSA or windows utility to format this USB drive with FAT32 and try to do the upgrading procedure again. 2. What is the meaning if users hear one beep and NSA-220 series shutdown after powering on the NSA-220 system? Answer: It means that your NSA system is running the same version firmware. 3. What is the meaning if users hear two beep and NSA-220 series shutdown after powering on the NSA-220 system? Answer: It means that your NSA system is not NSA-220 if users powering on and hear two beep sound, then NSA-220 system shutdown automatically. 4. What is the meaning if users hear three beeps and NSA-220 series shutdown after powering on the NSA-220 system? Answer: This means that USB flash drive file is damaged and cannot do recovering procedure. Please try to format the USB flash drive and reload the firmware again. Chapter 2 Troubleshooting 8
