1 PHILIPS ie33/iu22 HARD DRIVE BACKUP Please read this completely before you attempt. I will not be held responsible for any damages done to your unit(s). Once you ve done one, you can back up one in about 30 minutes. Scenario: So you just received this ultrasound unit. Everything seems to be fine and dandy. Then one day it won t power up. It s still under warranty so you call the manufacturer in. Three hours later (if they are available) they come in and reinstall the software. He tells you that a power surge or improper shut down could cause this. So 2 hours later, he s finished loading the software and the unit is ready to use. Wow, only 5 hours downtime woohoo! Four months later the same thing happens, it wont boot up it s locking up on Software Initialization. Guess what, it s out of warranty and you decided to go T&M on this unit. You don t have the know-how or the software to reinstall it. So you re stuck with calling the vendor in for the repair. You re not under contract and the vendor is swamped and can t make it until the next day. This doesn t make us look too good in the Department Managers eyes. So the vendor comes in and diagnoses it as a bad hard drive. He pops in a new drive and installs the software. You re good to go. You receive the invoice a few days later. It s for $2700!! On the invoice, $1,700 of it s for labor and travel, $1,000 of it is for the hard drive (guessing). WOW! If you can be a hard head about it, you can get them to install the software on a drive you provide. You can just run to Office Depot or your IT department for a replacement drive. It doesn t have to be the exact size, as long as it s larger than the one in there (250GB). Even with you providing the drive, you re still out $1,700. Here s a way to save you from these types of service calls. What you will be doing is creating a backup image of the drive. An image of a drive is a backup file that includes all files, folders, operating system and ALL partitions. You will need the Acronis True Image Workstation software installed on your pc or laptop. This backup procedure doesn t have to be done in the shop; it can easily be done in the field using a laptop. First off we ll take the hard drive out of the Ultrasound unit. Take off the back cover, ~six screws. Then take off the inside cover. The drive we are looking for has Windows and all the other files on it. If it s in a hard drive cage, it should be the one by itself.

2 Pull the cables off the drive and remove any screws holding the drive assembly in place. From here, take the drive to your computer and hook it up to this nifty little usb to SATA/IDE drive adapter. Hook up power to the drive, then plug in the usb cable to the pc as shown below. Link for adapter: If you don t have this adapter, you can install the drive on the pc without using the usb adapter. The usb adapter saves time taking the pc apart and shutdown/startup times for the pc.

3 Hopefully you have installed Acronis True Image Workstation already, if not do so now. Start Acronis True Image Workstation. Click backup as shown below.

4 Click next to get to this screen. Select The entire disk contents or individual partition.

5 Next select the disk that has a bunch of partitions in it. The first one is named OS. That s the disk you want to select. You want to check the disk and all the partitions below it as shown below. Make sure you unselect your computers drive. Click next. See picture below. If you get a warning If you already have backed up selected disks or files, we recommend that you create an incremental or differential backup, appending the latest changes to your original backup just click OK unless you are doing an update to an existing image.

6 Now tell it where to save the backup. What I did was created a folder for backups. Then I created a folder inside that one called ie33 and another iu22 respectively. Then with in those, I created another folder for each unit using the CE ID# as the folder name. Now in the file name, I used the id# and today s date as the actual file name. Example _ Make sure it has.tib after the file name you type in. See picture below. Click Next.

7 On this screen we want to select create new full backup archive as shown below. Click Next.

8 Now this screen we select default options. Feel free to select options manually and look at them if you like. I won t get into the options though. Select default options and click next as shown below. The next screen is for comments. You could use this to put notes in specifying the date of the archive, location, id#, options on the system..whatever. Click next.no picture.

9 The next screen shows a list of operations and settings to be completed during the backup process. Click Proceed to start the backup process. Depending on pc speed, it should only take 5 minutes to do this backup. So let s get back to our scenario. Now you have a back up of the drive. All s well until the ultrasound unit wont boot, corrupt hard drive. Below are the steps to recover it. Install the drive on your pc or use the usb adapter.

10 Open Acronis True Image Workstation and select Recovery as shown below.

11 Click next to get to this screen and select the file you need for this unit. Remember that it s in your backup s folder. See screenshot below.

12 Click next and select Restore disks or partitions and click next again.

13 Now select disk 2 and make sure all partitions are checked as shown below.

14 Next select the drive you re going to put the image on. You should be able to look at the model number on the drive to make sure you put it on the correct one. You don t want to select the incorrect one and wipe out one of your drives on your pc. You would lose all the information on that drive.

15 Now select Yes, I want to delete all the partitions on the destination hard disk drive before restoring. This will delete everything on the drive during the recovery process before writing the image back to it. Click next.

16 Select No I do not as shown below. Click next.

17 Again use default options. Click next.

18 Again, here s a summary of the operations to be performed. Click proceed. When it s complete, put it back into the ultrasound unit and power it up. If you had to get another hard drive, at some point it will say found new hardware and install it on its own (should anyway). After that it should finish booting up and you re ready to roll. Keep in mind if your backup does not have the same settings and options as what was on the unit before it crashed, you may have to restore them with the cd that s located on the unit now. This is why it s idea to do another backup when ever the user changes settings or when there is an upgrade to the unit. So to finish the scenario, the unit is up and running with out one phone call to Philips. You just saved all that money and downtime!! Big stewardship!! It s up and running in less than an hour. I plan to do this for all of our monitoring systems as well. Of which can be done across the network. I might put another one of these together explaining how to do that..yes using the same software.
