This approach can also incorporate a snipe preview to allow an operator to prevent any errors ahead of airing. Xmedia Suite is very flexible, and can be adapted to meet many different working styles. In these examples, the tools are used to create snipe graphics, which highlight what s Coming up next or Later. These promos can be created using varying levels of process automation. The process starts with preparing a graphic template with data fields, and associated images in Xstudio. The template is then loaded onto the Xmedia Server archive, and also onto a Vertigo XG graphics processor. Ahead of transmission, the snipe template is automatically pre-loaded by Xplay, and the data fields are populated by data from a traffic database, delivered via the Xmedia Server. The pre-loaded page can be viewed by the operator with Xplay, and any graphical errors can be prevented from airing, either by modifying or aborting the graphic. The graphics sequences are then automatically taken to-air. Quasi-automatic snipe page creation Xplay media event sequencer The most basic level of automating snipe production is to use the Xbuilder tool for quasi-automatic page creation. This involves the operator selecting the snipe graphic text, or values, from pull-down choices within Xbuilder, which are generated from data from automation or traffic. This approach has the benefit of a WYSIWYG preview of the snipe graphic, although the process is less automated, and therefore slower for large volume snipe production than a more fully automated workflow (outlined below). 11 Xmedia Suite Application Fully automated bag n tag promos A bag n tag is a full screen promotional interstitial used to create excitement about an upcoming episode. A typical promo will incorporate an episode specific clip and a repeated show clip, played with an overlay of schedule information (day, time and channel) and an associated voice-over. Traditionally, bag n tag promos have been created specially for each airing, using an editor, but this represents a huge amount of repetitive work, especially in multi-channel facilities and for regional affiliates. For instance, a show that airs on Monday at 8pm across multiple affiliated stations will require promos for Monday at 8, Tomorrow at 8, Tonight at 8, and Next ; all with the local station s logo and voice-over, along with adjustments for the local time zone or schedule differences. A much more efficient way of creating these promos involves live playout of individual clip, graphics and audio elements, using a flexible timeline to accommodate variable length clips. By not pre-rendering, the promos can also be assembled much faster, >>> >>> using traffic data to populate templates. A further advantage of live playout is the flexibility and customizability of the promo events and timeline, which can accommodate any schedule changes at the last minute. To build a promo, the operator selects clip and graphics elements and adds metadata to build a playlist (see opposite). Xbuilder is used to convert the template into graphics pages, using traffic data. The completed pages are loaded to the Vertigo XG. Xbuilder is also used to create the promo playlist, with selection of the episode clip, the generic show clip, the name super, and the network logo. The timeline for the individual graphics and clip elements can be fully controlled. The station automation pre-loads the promo as one event, and Xplay can be used to preview, edit or abort the segment, ahead of playing on-air. Upon being triggered by station automation, Xplay drives the graphics sequence to-air from the Vertigo XG processor. Next

12 Xmedia Suite Application Template-based newsroom graphics Data-driven, news graphics In addition to presenting locally generated news content, Xmedia Suite is ideal for elegantly managing data-driven graphics, using data-interfacing to standard news feeds, such as AP, Reuters and SportsTicker, as well as weather alerts, web data, and other sources of real-time information. Xmedia Suite is ideal for newsroom environments, and can be used for fully automated data-driven graphics, as well as for graphics prepared by journalists to support their stories, using simple to use templates and image databases. The application s powerful tools automate both the acquisition of the news data, and the linking of the data to graphics templates. Multiple data sources can be handled simultaneously to provide full flexibility with on-air presentation. Since the data acquisition process is fully automated, graphics can be generated from live data, and sent to air, with no additional intervention by newsroom personnel. Multiple animation groups can be created, with animation of a wide set of properties per object, and updatable keyframes for dynamic control.
