4 02 10 Key Funding Tips Start your search for funding early Give yourself plenty of time to gather information, references and other material and don t leave the preparation of your application until the last few weeks before the deadline. Many awards require you to have been offered a place at the University before your application can be considered. If you intend to apply for funding, whether awarded by the University or from an external source, you should therefore apply for admission to the University earlier than most students to secure your offer of a place before making your application for a funding award. Study your funding source All funding agencies will have their own criteria for deciding how their resources should be allocated. So it is worth spending time on familiarising yourself with these and making sure your application clearly addresses the particular requirements of your targeted source of support. If you are applying for a University of Edinburgh award, then you must obviously intend to study at the University and not at any other institution. Pay attention to the presentation of your application Remember that your scholarship application represents the entire and only picture the selection committee will have of you. If you are required to complete a paper application, always type or print your details neatly in black ink when completing your application form. Avoid coloured paper, elaborate fonts and glossy covers as it is likely that your application materials will be photocopied first before forwarding to panel members for their consideration. Explore your study options Most scholarship applications will ask candidates to state the programme of study or research topic which they intend to pursue. If you are successful in receiving a scholarship the offer of the award will probably be conditional on you enrolling on the programme/research area stated on your scholarship application. Before you submit your application for a scholarship you should explore all the options and ensure that you select the right programme for you from the outset and that you satisfy the entrance requirements for that particular programme. Complete the application form in full Spend time on completing your application and avoid any ambiguities. If you feel a question does not apply to you, then you should make that clear on your application. Never leave a question blank. Remember that every question is there for a reason and the panel could look unfavourably even suspiciously at any application that has not been completed in full. Be honest and use the application form to explain any gaps or delays in your previous studies.

5 03 MAY 2016 Don t underestimate the importance of your personal statement It is likely that you will be required to submit a personal statement in which you should set out your achievements and goals, as well as indicating how the award will benefit you in your studies. This statement will be read closely by panel members and can differentiate you from the many other applicants. Take your time writing this and make sure that your statement reflects you and your accomplishments as clearly as possible. Ask for references well in advance of the deadline date Most externally funded awards will require you to submit one or two references in support of your application. I suggest that you ask for these references well in advance of the funding deadline date and that you provide some basic details to your referee on the kind of information that would be useful to include. Please remember that a reference from an academic who knows you and your abilities well is much better than a reference from a senior Professor who may not know you as well. Pay attention to funding application closing deadlines Applications submitted after the closing deadline are usually not considered. Remember that the whole scholarships process is very competitive and there will always be considerably more applications received from similarly qualified candidates than the amount of funding available. Equally, do not leave your application until the week before the deadline. If you do, you risk having your application turned down if there are inadequacies which the University could have helped you to resolve if you had given yourself sufficient time. Make sure that your funding application materials reach the correct office Before you send your scholarship application it is advisable to make a copy of your application and all supporting documentation. This will be a huge help in the rare occasion that your application goes missing as having copies will make it much easier to resend your application to the funding body should this become necessary. Check and check again! You should have invested a reasonable amount of time investigating the funding source, checking your eligibility, completing the application, and gathering all the required documentation that you need to submit with your application. Spend that little bit of extra time before submitting your application checking your spelling and ensuring that what you have said is in fact what you meant to say. 6 04 What will it cost? Fees Additional Costs Your main costs at University will be tuition fees, additional programme costs, accommodation, food, books, and clothes. It is estimated that it will cost you between 10,000 and 14,500 per academic session to cover the basic costs while studying as a postgraduate at Edinburgh. This figure may be higher or lower depending, of course, on your lifestyle and whether you choose to live in self-catered halls of residence or a flat. Further useful information on estimated living costs can be found at finance/cost-of-living Full details regarding tuition fees can be found on the Scholarships and Student Funding Services website at In common with other universities in the United Kingdom (UK), there are different levels of tuition fees for students whose status is home (UK/EU) or overseas. A student s fee status as home or overseas is determined in accordance with the Education (Fees) (Scotland) Regulations The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provides an information sheet for students, which explains the conditions you need to meet to be entitled to pay tuition fees at the lower home rate if you are studying in Scotland. This information can be found at uk/student-funding/fee-status All applicants are notified of their fee status classification at the time of application. Please ensure that you are certain of your fee status before accepting an offer of admission. Additional Programme Costs (APCs) are set by the School/College and may be payable by postgraduate students. Rates vary according to the field of study. Please contact the appropriate College postgraduate office for further information. Accommodation Accommodation for postgraduate students is all selfcatered and can be found across a range of convenient locations within easy reach of most key University buildings and Edinburgh s city centre. University accommodation offers: comprehensive community and welfare networks from our Residence Life team mixed gender residences, though some individual flats are single sex laundry facilities secure cycle storage data network services in each bedroom for access to and the internet Guarantees and deadlines We guarantee offers of accommodation to: all new, single postgraduate research students (UK, EU or International) *Taught Masters Degree Programme *Masters by Research Degree Programme *Research Degree Programme

7 05 new, single postgraduate taught students (from outside the EU only) In such cases, guarantees apply as long as: your accommodation application is received by 31 July 2016 you have accepted an unconditional firm offer to study at the University by 31 July 2016 you will be studying in Edinburgh for the whole of the academic year starting in September For postgraduate taught students from within the EU, including the UK, we are currently unable to guarantee an offer of University accommodation; however, we fully expect to have over 200 rooms available for UK and EU students, so an early application is well worthwhile. Accommodation options We can offer a wide variety in either traditional hall style buildings and in blocks of self-contained flats, the latter typically varying in size from four to six single study bedrooms. There is a mix of en-suite rooms and those sharing bathroom facilities. Currently under development is our Holyrood accommodation complex, offering brand new options for postgraduates living including a new Residence Hall based on successful international models and unique in the UK. With around 480 en-suite study bedrooms, there are increased opportunities to live in a truly international environment. At its centre, eight kitchens in one open- plan space with shared cooking and dining at its heart; supported by residents lounges offering quiet or more active space choices, a micro-lab and study room, TV/meeting room and soundproof music rooms. Residence Life Our properties are managed by professional Wardens, supported by specially trained Resident Assistants who are usually students and live on site, so are readily available to address any welfare or community issues. They also organise and host a wide range of social and academic-related activities. Costs Rents for University accommodation typically include utility costs, internet services, personal contents insurance and some cleaning services. Some rooms have shared bathroom facilities and some are en-suite. Rents for single rooms during the academic year, based on a typical 51-week lease, are in the range of per week. Sharing rooms If you are interested in sharing a twin room and if, as part of the application process, you express a preference for doing so, we will do our very best to satisfy your request. There are many advantages to sharing - we make every effort to use larger rooms, we provide additional storage and study spaces and you will benefit from having more immediate company and access to a larger network of potential friends; plus, with rents starting from 70 per week, your costs are significantly reduced. Private accommodation Where we are unable to provide you with an offer of University accommodation, we can often still offer some assistance with advice on alternatives in Edinburgh. For example, private student accommodation options can be found at Family provision For students coming to Edinburgh with a partner or a family, we do have limited accommodation, typically available on a first-come first-served basis.

68 66 Further information Opening a bank account It is very useful to open a bank account once you arrive in Edinburgh. This process is not normally available prior to arrival in Edinburgh unless your branch at home has a relationship with a UK bank. This process can only take place once you have moved into your accommodation. Why open an account? You may need to pay for accommodation by direct debit or provide bank statements as evidence of your funding for immigration purposes. If you are a student for a year or longer then most banks will permit you to open an account. If you are here for less than a year then your choice may be more limited. Which bank should you choose? We are not able to recommend specific banks to students but it is a good idea to use a bank with a branch near the university. These branches are generally more used to dealing with students and understand their problems and needs. We have negotiated with some banks (see below) for them to accept our letter of introduction which will assist you in opening an account. You must also take the appropriate documentation. These documents are listed on the letter of introduction. It is up to you to do some research, work out which account suits you best and find out what the banks are charging for their various services. How long will it take? Some accounts can be opened during an appointment in the bank branch, others take longer. The time it takes varies from bank to bank and depends on the type of account you open. Banks are now obliged to carry out very strict checks and abide by banking regulations to prevent money laundering etc. This means that the whole process may take longer than you would wish. Be prepared for the process to take up to 2 weeks but remember to ask when speaking with each bank how long it normally takes. Bank Introduction letter To assist you to open an account, by providing proof of your accommodation in Edinburgh, the University can provide you with a Bank Introduction letter. If you are living in University Accommodation, after you have checked in, you will be able to download a formal letter providing proof of your address in Edinburgh from MyEd. Look in MyEd for the Print Bank Letter facility. If you are in private accommodation you should use your tenancy agreement or a utility bill. Alternatively you can apply for a bank introduction letter by completing an online form at To help you we have prepared a Bank Comparison chart which provides information on some of the facilities and services available at those banks which accept our letter of introduction which you can find at: banking
