The payment of fees is the responsibility of the student and, in the event of a student s sponsoring authority (if any) failing to make payment, the student will be held personally liable for payment. Annual, programme and course fees cover matriculation, tuition and one diet of examination. They include an element in respect of membership of University unions, sports facilities, and other student facilities and amenities. Matriculated students who are not required to pay an annual, programme or course fee should contact the Students Association about associate membership. 3
4 2. Full-time students domiciled, as defined by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), in Scotland or in other European Union countries outside the United Kingdom, will not be required to make a personal contribution towards the costs of their annual tuition if they are studying at publicly funded institutions in Scotland for the first time. The Scottish Executive will pay all such tuition fees through SAAS. Full-time students must apply to SAAS for the payment of their tuition fees, even if they are not applying for any other means of support. Details of application procedures are available from SAAS, Gyleview House, 3 Redheughs Rigg, South Gyle, Edinburgh, EH12 9HH; telephone ; website 3. Students are advised that they should be certain of their fee status before registering. Further information and advice on the Definition of an Overseas Student for Fee Purposes is available from the Registry, and the Definition is published in the University s Undergraduate Prospectus. 4. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is accurate at the time of going to press. For up to date information relating to tuition fees, or for advice on the contents of this leaflet, please contact: The Scholarships and Student Finance Fees Team, Registry, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH8 9YL; telephone enquiry number: ( ); departmental fax: ; address: Fees@ed.ac.uk; web address: 5. Withdrawal from the University: At the discretion of the University, a refund of tuition fees may be made to students who withdraw from a programme with appropriate academic approval. Normally, any fee refunded will be derived from attendance for all or part of a semester and the application of an administrative charge. Students who withdraw during the first semester will be liable for 60% of the annual tuition fees. If a student withdraws during the second semester, he/she will be liable for payment of the full session fees for the programme of studies and will not be entitled to a refund. STUDENTS ON FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES (i.e. excluding visiting students) 7. Veterinary Medicine: visiting and full-fee students (whether home/eu or overseas) should contact the Veterinary Medicine School Office in the first instance for advice. 8. Year course and semester course fee rates are available to UK/EU visiting students, but only if they have been admitted from the outset to take only a year course or semester course. Such students taking courses totalling in excess of 80 credits will be charged the applicable full-time fee. All other visiting students are liable for the annual fee (or the appropriate proportion thereof if admitted for one semester only). Year course and semester course fee rates are available to graduating students, but only in respect of an additional or repeated year of study. 9. Further information will be provided to new entrants prior to their first matriculation, and is also available from the Registry, The University of Edinburgh, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh, EH8 9YL.
