3 Notes on Tuition Fees for Postgraduate Students following Master of Philosophy and Doctorate Research Programmes General 1. The fee rates apply to all students (but see below note 2) who commence a new year or other period of study on or after 1 August Fees are subject to annual revision and are due in full at registration. The payment of fees is the responsibility of the student and, in the event of a student s sponsoring authority (if any) failing to make payment, the student will be held personally liable for payment. Annual, programme and course fees cover matriculation, tuition and one diet of examination. They include an element in respect of membership of University unions, sports facilities, and other student facilities and amenities. Matriculated students who are not required to pay an annual, programme or course fee should contact the Students Association about associate membership. 2. Self-financing students registered on standard home/eu fee taught and research masters programmes from , who then progress immediately to standard home/eu Master of Philosophy and Doctorate research programmes will be offered a discount in the year that they transfer to the MPhil/PhD. For example, a standard research masters student paid 3,500 in If that student immediately progresses to an MPhil/PhD in session he/she will receive a discount of 490 in This ensures that over the full period of their doctoral registration they are charged the same amount as a student who registered for an MPhil/PhD in This fee discount is only to be offered to self-financing students, who have not received a UK/EU Masters Bursary from the University during their original taught/research masters programme. 3. Students are advised that they should be certain of their fee status before registering. Further information and advice on the Definition of an Overseas Student for Fee Purposes is available from the Registry, and the Definition is published in the University s Undergraduate Prospectus and available at 4. A late matriculation fee of 45 will be charged to students who register after the due date without reasonable cause. 5. A fee of 40 is payable prior to first graduation for registration as a member of the General Council. 6. Annual research/programme costs may also be payable by postgraduate students as notified in their formal Letter of Admission. Rates vary according to the field of study. Please refer to the Postgraduate Study Programme. 7. No fees are payable in respect of periods of approved suspension of studies. 8. In terms of Resolution of the University Court no. 7/1982, students in debt to the University may not be permitted to re-matriculate in future sessions, nor to graduate, if eligible to do so until the outstanding sum has been cleared. 9. Postgraduate students (including members of staff) whose annual fees are remitted in full by authority of the University Court are required to pay a matriculation fee of 60. This is in respect of each session until the final submission of a thesis or dissertation. An examination fee is also payable. Annual Fees 10. Full-time candidates for the degree of PhD and for the DCP pay a total of three full-time annual fees and full-time candidates for the MPhil and MLitt pay a total of two full-time annual fees. Postgraduate students continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable are then required to pay one matriculation fee of 60. This is irrespective of the period of prescribed study under supervision. 11. Students continuing study beyond the period for which the above fees are payable Full-time students commencing on or after Any full-time candidate who does not submit his/her thesis within the normal maximum period of study (four years for PhD and three years for MPhil or MLitt) will be charged a matriculation fee and then an annual continuation fee until the date of submission. This fee will be charged pro rata for every 3 months once an extension has been formally approved. Part-time candidates commencing on or after Any part-time candidate who does not submit his/her thesis within the normal maximum period of study (six years for PhD and five years for MPhil or four MLitt) will be charged an annual continuation fee until the date of submission. This fee will be charged pro rata for every 3 months once an extension has been formally approved.
4 Full-time students commencing prior to Any full-time candidate continuing study beyond the period for which annual fees are payable are required to pay an annual matriculation fee until the date of submission 12. Part-time Postgraduate Study Part-time Study for the Full Academic Session Home/EU students will be charged 50% of the full-time fee. In session this will be 1,545. Home/EU students who commenced study prior to Part-time candidates for the PhD pay a total of four part time annual fees and part-time candidates for the MPhil and MLitt pay a total of three part-time annual fees. This is irrespective of the period of prescribed study under supervision. Home/EU students who commenced study after Part-time candidates for the degree of PhD pay a total of six part-time annual fees and part-time candidates for the MPhil and MLitt pay four part-time annual fees, each at one-half of the corresponding full-time fee. This is irrespective of the prescribed period of study. Students who submit their theses early are required to pay the remaining years fees on submission. 13. Overseas students Students whose programme of studies commenced prior to are charged the rate of fee applicable to home students. Students whose programme of studies began after are charged a higher fee which is usually approximately 50% of the corresponding full-time overseas fee. The fee is calculated by taking the relevant full-time fee for overseas students, then multiplying this by the part-time fee for home students. This figure is then divided by the full-time fee for home students, to give the appropriate fee amount. 14. Visiting Students Visiting students admitted to full-time study for one semester will be charged at a semester rate which is one half (50%) of the corresponding full-time rate. 15. Medicine The pre and para Clinical subject areas are: Biomedical Sciences; Medical Microbiology; Pathology; Neuroscience (including the Centre for Neuroscience); the Clinical Biochemistry section of Reproductive & Developmental Sciences; the Public Health section of Community Health Sciences; and the Medical Physics and Engineering section of Medical & Radiological Sciences. Overseas research students registered in the Human Genetics Unit will be charged a fee equivalent to that of a pre and para clinical subject area. 16. Postgraduate Dental Institute Details of fees for students who commenced study prior to can be obtained from the Fees Team, Scholarships and Student Finance Office, Registry. 17. DPsychol, DVM&S, MD, DDS The fees for the DPsychol, DVM&S, MD and DDS comprise an initial 575 registration fees, plus 575 per annum (including the first year). In addition a 575 examination fee will be payable upon submission. 18. Annual Revision of Fees Fees are subject to annual revision. However, the University will do all it reasonably can to keep fee increases for students in their second and subsequent years of study broadly in line with inflationary increases in the University s costs. Payment Arrangements For self-financing students (including students who are partly self-funding) fees are due in full at registration. However, students attending the University for the full session may request to pay tuition fees in three instalments by credit card or direct debit. The appropriate form can be downloaded from If choosing to pay by credit card instalments, the first instalment of one third of the total tuition fee due is payable when you register and arrangements made for the payment of the two remaining instalments. If choosing to pay by direct debit you will be notified in writing of the payment schedule. For most students commencing in September 2005, the first direct debit of one third of tuition fees due will be collected on 10 November 2005 (or shortly thereafter). Please ensure that the credit card will not expire
5 before the final instalment is collected in March 2006.The remaining two instalments will be processed on the 27 January 2006 (or shortly thereafter), and 27 March 2006 (or shortly thereafter). Students may pay in full by cash, cheque, credit or debit card. Additionally, payment in full can be made online by debit or credit card through the University of Edinburgh s Electronic Receipting Application at: The University will accept direct transfer of funds, for payment in full, to its bank account from students outwith the UK. The University s bank and account numbers for tuition fees only are: The Bank of Scotland 32a Chambers Street Edinburgh EH1 1JB Swift code: BofS GB2S Sort code: Account number: IBAN Number: GB60 BOFS Please ask the bank to quote your (i.e. the student s) name as a reference and, preferably, your matriculation number if known, and bring a copy of the transfer to registration. Students are advised that, in some instances, it can take a considerable time to effect the transfer of overseas funds to the University s account. It is advisable to allow for this when transferring funds to arrive in time for registration. Refund of tuition fees At the discretion of the University, a refund of tuition fees may be made to students who withdraw from a programme with appropriate academic approval. Pro rata adjustment will be made for students whose year of study commences other than in September. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is accurate at the time of going to press.
