1 Commonwealth Conversations: Public Health December 22, Fun, Health Recipes for Families to Cook Together Posted b John Jacob, a health com m unications writer and editor at the Massachusetts Departm ent of Public Health. Here at Mass in Motion, we re all about finding new way s to help Massachusetts families to eat better and mov e more. This week we re proud to announce an ex citing new resource in that effort a free monthly newsletter called ChopChop. Each month in ChopChop, we ll feature a fun, easy -to-make and healthy recipe - featuring locally -grown produce - which parents and children can make together. What s so important about that? First off, meals cooked at home tend to be healthier (and less ex pensiv e) than takeout food. What s more, by teaching our kids to cook we make them more nutritionally literate and more likely to dev elop healthier eating habits ov er a lifetime. Besides, cooking together can be fun! Governor Patrick, ChopChop founder Sall Sam ps on, and friends m ak e Cranberr Apples auce The ChopChop newsletter is the product of an innov ativ e partnership with ChopChop Magazine, a nationwide quarterly publication that focuses on fun, healthy cooking for families. Each month s newsletter will be posted on the Mass in Motion website at /massinmotion/chopchop. We ll also send the electronic newsletter out v ia to pediatricians, school nurses, community health centers and other community partners. The new collaboration was announced this week by Gov ernor Dev al Patrick at a fun-filled ev ent at Community Serv ings, a not-forprofit food and nutrition program in Boston. Following his opening remarks, the Gov ernor was joined by an energetic group of y oung people in the program s test kitchen to prepare Cranberry Applesauce the recipe that s featured in the debut edition of the ChopChop newsletter. 1/5
