2 The members of the Lansing Coordinated School Health Team (CSHT) recognize that an integrated health program can improve student s academic performance and provide them with healthy habits that can be carried into adulthood. The team acknowledges that serving nutritious foods throughout the day and at school events and celebrations is an important part of kid s academic success. They also realize that this should be coupled with physical activity to truly have an impact on student s overall well-being. The coordinated school health team supports a Healthy Snack Policy and was instrumental in bringing the Flat 14ers program to the school. The team also believes that providing families with nutrition education on the benefits of choosing and serving nutritious foods, that they will be more likely to serve these foods at home. Lansing plans to offer Cooking Matters classes to parents and students. And they know that by recruiting parents/families to support health activities, they can accomplish a lot more for the students at Lansing. Challenges: 1. School staff completed an Alliance for a Healthier generation assessment and discovered areas which needed to be addressed. 2. Members of the CSHT noted that parents required more education regarding healthy lifestyles, including healthy meals and increasing physical activity. 3. Students do not have ample opportunity to participate in physical activity during the school day. Solutions: The team identified nutrition and physical activity as their key areas of focus for next year. Specific goals are: Provide nutrition education opportunity and cooking class for parents/family members Increase parent involvement and participation in health activities

3 Provide physical activity opportunities for students Promote healthy messages to students and families To accomplish these goals, the team will perform the following activities: GOAL #1: Provide nutrition education opportunity and cooking class for parents/family members Current Climate: Currently, there are limited activities to support health and nutrition education for parents. Desired Outcomes: Increase number of opportunities for parent education CSHT Success: The CSHT will record the number of opportunities available for parents to learn about healthy lifestyles. Parent/Family Success: Cooking Matters will administer a pre and post survey with parents/family members to see if there is an increased knowledge of what constitutes healthy foods and a desire for parents/family matters to cook more.
