2 Session Objectives Describe the importance of how a project fits with previous efforts with regards to sustainability. Recognize the culture of an organization and community with regards to sustainability. Formulate a plan that supports policy and environmental change strategies with demonstration projects. Develop a future plan that incorporates strategies through multiple conversations with a variety of stakeholders.

3 Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project (MCOPP) MCOPP is an inclusive coalition with the goal of reducing childhood obesity in Milwaukee through environmental and organizational policy changes that promote healthy eating and active living.

4 MCOPP Goals 1. Promote community change strategies for healthy eating and active living through an inclusive coalition. 2. Adopt healthy food and beverage policy and environment change strategies. 3. Adopt land use policy and environment change strategies focused on healthy eating and active living within the area surrounding each agency. 4. Adopt active living policy and environment change strategies for youth and staff. 5. Support the use of evidence-based curriculum and provide evidence-based professional development for staff.

6 MCOPP Coalition: Provides a continuous source of expertise and support for the project Builds capacity in the city Lead agency: United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) 8 member neighborhood agencies throughout the city of Milwaukee 63,000 Milwaukee residents served Academic partner: Medical College of Wisconsin Other partners: Approximately 30 community-based, healthserving, academic, educational, and private organizations represented

7 Project History: 2004 Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Pediatric Residents taught Neighborhood House children about food labels 2005 MCW Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP) planning grant to 8 United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee MCW HWPP implementation grant to UNCOM Healthy Kids Healthy Communities grant to UNCOM

8 Input sessions showed that community members are aware of the need for nutrition and physical activity and are concerned about childhood obesity. Executive Directors all ranked of high importance physical activity/nutrition curriculum development and training for staff. Youth-serving and family-serving agency staff ascribed: Highest importance to providing physical activity as part of programs Most readiness for providing healthy snacks and meals as part of programs

9 Small seed projects for agencies to implement nutrition and physical activity projects. Connect programs and policies. Operationalizing policies by utilizing strategies learned in demo projects to generate outcomes. 20 Thinking about the future We began early within year 1 we held a Blue Sky Visioning session as part of professional development. Developed leverage points utilized a small demonstration project as a means to gain additional funding Wisconsin and American Beverage Association $30,000. Received approval for policies in April 2013 and immediately asked the question What s Next? Building upon what we know and learned and building that into the next grant $750,000 Impact

21 Lessons Learned Listen to and learn from people in the community Understand and acknowledge issues and challenges determine where you focus energy Work together celebrate together and seek assistance through your networks Combine policy/environment change and programming and determine measurement strategies In everything, seek leverage points that can be building blocks for sustaining efforts
