Health Board sponsorship of approximately eu 11,000 per annum is available for these places to cover fees. In addition the student is paid >eu 30,000 per annum in salary. The students work on placements for the 3 year course in St John of Gods or within the Health Board and get block release Each academic year and then day release each week to attend lectures. Trinity are hoping to increase from 6 to 12 places this year. Counselling Psychology The application of psychology to working collaboratively with people across a diverse range of human problems and life events to empower people to consider change (ie. helping people manage bereavement, working with mental health issues and disorders etc.) Individual/Group/Family Counselling Emotional Distress/Depression BPS Diploma in Counselling Psychology Other postgraduate courses with exemptions from this Good (BPS accredited) degree 2.1 for most P.G. courses Participation in personal counselling Educational Psychology Educational psychologists are concerned with children's learning and development, working mainly in schools, with teachers and parents. Forensic Psychology Forensic psychologists undertake their work in the criminal and civil justice field. It is one of the fastest growing areas of employment of psychology graduates Work in Criminal and Civil Justice Field BPS Diploma in Forensic Psychology or BPS accredited training course in Forensic Psychology followed by Stage 2 of the BPS Diploma Honours degree in Psychology (BPS accredited) Health Psychology A new & evolving area involving the practice and application of psychological methods to the study of behaviour relevant to health, illness and health care. For example, the study of how patients adapt to illness. The study of behaviour relevant to health, illness and health care 1 Year Society-accredited training course 2 Years in supervised practice Good (BPS accredited) degree, 2.1 for most PG courses Neuro-psychology Neuro-science involves clinical specialists trained in the assessment, management, treatment and needs of people with head injuries and other neurological disorders. Assessment, Management, Treatment and Service needs of people with neurological disorders Training Check with BPS for details of new course which is being developed at present Post-qualification specialisation following clinical training (may be available to other divisions) Occupational Psychology Occupational psychologists are concerned with the performance of people at work and in training, how organisations function and how individuals and small groups behave at work. Performance of people at work and in training How organisations function How individuals and small groups behave at work 1 Year FT/2 PT Society-accredited training course and 2 Years in supervised practice or 3 Years in supervised practice + BPS Certificate in Occupational Psychology Good degree in Psychology (BPS accredited) Sport Psychology The practical application of psychology to sports-related issues such as motivation, performance and the dynamic of team work. Not yet an official BPS chartered career. Application of psychological principles to problems and training in a wide range of sports Postgraduate training and expertise in sports psychology that fulfill BPS criteria for Registration as a Chartered Psychologist Good degree in Psychology (BPS accredited)
4 Psychotherapy The psychological treatment of a wide range of mental and physical ills by a number of different methods. Treatment is carried out with individual patients or clients usually via a long series of intimate discussions over some years Some psychologists train in Psychotherapy but it is not yet an accredited area There are many theoretical frameworks for treating a wide range of mental/emotional and sometimes physical conditions e.g. Freudian, Gestalt, Jungian etc. Teaching & Research Universities Research Institutes Psychology modules in wide range of colleges and courses e.g. Business, Health Care, Education, Social Science etc. PhD required for Universities Masters is usual minimum for other areas Teaching Training in Ireland Professional Courses in Ireland Postgraduate Course in Primary Teaching 18 month course 4 colleges:mary I, Limerick / St. Patricks,Drumcondra/ Colaiste Mhuire, Merino / Froebel College, Blackrock Only allowed apply to one college.
