1 Classical Christian Academy 2289 W. Seltice Way, Post Falls, ID Phone: (208) Fax: (208) Academy Profile The Community Classical Christian Academy is strategically located in Post Falls, Idaho and serves the families of Kootenai County as well as Spokane County in Washington State. Kootenai County is the third largest county in the state of Idaho with a population that exceeds 131,000. The geographical layout of Kootenai County spans over 1200 square miles and provides a full array of recreational activities including hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, cycling, rock climbing, boating, swimming and numerous other activities. The major cities of Kootenai County include Coeur d Alene, Post Falls and Hayden in addition to numerous smaller communities. To the west of CCA s campus, in Washington s Spokane County, are the communities of Liberty Lake, Spokane Valley and the city of Spokane. Spokane County spans over 1750 square miles with a population exceeding 451,000 people. In addition to the recreational activities of the region, both Spokane County and Kootenai County provide cultural opportunities including theatre, symphony, art and dance. The Academy Established in 1995 as a college preparatory school, Classical Christian Academy provides an education from K4 through grade twelve. The educational philosophy of Classical Christian Academy is founded upon the Classical Method of instruction expressed in the Trivium. The Trivium, a Latin term translated as the three roads or three phases of education, provides the foundation for a genuine liberal arts education. The three phases of education are recognized as Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric, which are consistent with the developmental characteristics of students as they mature and grow both physically and mentally. The Grammar phase (K - 6th) emphasizes the acquisition of basic facts in each discipline. During this phase young students enjoy absorbing facts and data through songs, recitation, chants, repetitious activity and various education games. Logical and rhetorical concepts and exercises are used less often during this phase. The Logic phase (7th - 9th) focuses on the analytical nature of students in these grades. During this phase students are encouraged to critically think or reason through the data that they acquire. The focus of this period is to address the Why? of various topics. During the Logic phase teachers will primarily employ the Socratic method of instruction and increase the dialogue with the students. A formal study of logic and logical fallacies provides the basis for all future critical analysis. Additional tools introduced at this time include debate, philosophy, research and persuasive writing. The third phase is Rhetoric (10th - 12th). The Rhetoric, or Poetic phase, includes an in-depth approach to research which culminates in the Senior Thesis/Project. Students in this phase undergo a refinement process that encourages them to be persuasive in both oration and in their writing. Students are evaluated on their ability to research, organize and present information in order to genuinely persuade others to embrace their position through careful analysis, organization and presentation of material. During the Rhetoric phase students are evaluated on their research and presentation of material. Mission Statement By God s grace Classical Christian Academy exists to provide a Christ-centered, classical and college preparatory education firmly rooted in biblical truth. A Process-Driven Academy Classical Christian Academy instructs through classical and Christian pedagogy: Classical Pedagogy Christian Pedagogy Love of learning Biblical worldview Tools of learning Service to Christ Critical thinking Character development Whole person Whole person Low student to teacher ratio (9:1) Assisting parents Broad and diverse curriculum Apologetics and evangelical
2 Accreditation Classical Christian Academy holds a candidacy status by the Association of Classical Christian Schools. The Curriculum The class schedule consists of seven 52 minute periods, five days per week. Prior to the academic year, the class schedule consisted of eight 45 minute periods, five days per week. One credit is awarded per semester for classes which meet more than three days per week. Classes meeting three days a week or less are awarded one-half credit per semester. The minimum number of credits required for graduation is fifty (50) and include the following courses: Core Curriculum: These classes meet every day and each student is required to take the courses offered at their grade level. Enrollment in these classes is mandatory for all attending students. A careful review is given when considering extending credit to incoming transfer students and the courses offered from outside educational institutions. Under exceptional circumstances credit will be granted, or requirements waived, when such action is in the best interest of the Academy and the Student. The following is the list of semester credits required for each discipline: Biblical Studies: Eight (8) credits Laboratory Science: Six (6) credits Social Studies: Eight (8) credits Mathematics: Six (6) credits Language Arts: Six (6) credits Foreign Language: Four (4) credits Rhetoric: Six (6) credits Philosophy and Debate: Two (2) credits Non-Core Curriculum: Physical Education: Two (2) credits Fine Arts: Two (2) credits minimum Service: One-half (.5) credit Grades: Grades are assigned using the standard A, B, C, D, F scale. A student must earn at least a C to pass a class. Therefore no credit is given for grades of D or F. GPA Calculation: GPA is based on a standard 4.00 scale, with no weighted classes. (A = 4.00; B = 3.00; C = 2.00; D = 1.00; F = 0.00). Class Ranking: Class Rank is determined by GPA, utilizing class average then course difficulty as a tie breaker. CCA Distinctives Classical Christian Academy remains the premier private school choice in Kootenai County. As a college preparatory program, our goal and assumption is that graduates from Classical Christian Academy will continue on into college level work at a four-year institution. Therefore the classes taught at Classical Christian Academy are taught at an honors level. CCA graduates will have a solid liberal arts education intended to provide them with a firm foundation to enter the competitive environment of the college or university institution. Areas of distinction include: Language instruction in Latin and Greek Logic and Philosophy Requisite Speech and Debate Competitions Community Service in 9th-12th grades Travel Study Program (optional): 6th grade: Washington D.C. and Civil War battlefields 9th grade: Boston, Philadelphia, Williamsburg 12th grade: Israel, Greece, Egypt and Rome Portrait of the CCA Graduate: Christ-likeness: Pursing obedience to God by following Christ s example with the fruit of the Holy Spirit manifest. Academic Achievement: A critical thinker using logic and reason to formulate persuasive communication. Biblical Wisdom: Equipped with discernment by God s Word and approaches life through a biblical worldview. Service: Active in Christian and community service. Character: Intentional in developing Godly character (e.g. humility, integrity, honesty, courage). It is our desire to provide a superior education that will foster the love of learning and allow graduating students opportunities to further their already enriched education. We hope to graduate critical thinkers that can immediately contribute to society while continuing in their learning.
