Hadley Junior High School and Philemon Wright High School Student Support Programs Our schools are proud to offer a number of Student Support Programs. The goal of these programs is to increase academic success and student achievement at both Hadley and Philemon. This document outlines the referral process for students and parents, the content of each program and the method of student scheduling and evaluation. **Please note that these are the general guidelines for programs listed below. However, individual programming considerations are made on a case-by-case basis** Credit Recovery [Hadley] The Credit Recovery program is for students who were unsuccessful in either Math OR English in the past school year. The students are taken out of either Geography (three times a cycle) or Ethics (twice a cycle) to work in a small group setting. The students are provided with one-on-one teaching time, additional time to work on assignments, and increased exposure to lesson materials and technology. The Credit Recovery program is for students who maintain a high Attitude to Study rating throughout the year, as determined by their teachers and targets the students who will take advantage of the course by working hard and striving for improvement. The goal of the program is to provide the students enrolled with the opportunity to become more successful in the core course that they had difficulty with in the past. The student has been unsuccessful in either English or Math in the previous school year Teacher referrals for students at risk of being unsuccessful Students are removed from Geography (3 periods/cycle), or from Ethics (2 periods/cycle) Hadley or Philemon Resource teacher Students are not evaluated in the Credit Recovery Program Students will be evaluated by their Math and English teachers on their classroom assessments and evaluations Students will not receive a mark on the report cards for the class that they are taken out of to go to Credit Recovery (ie. Geography or Ethics) and will receive an NE (not evaluated) on their report cards Hadley s Academic Catch-Up As part of the Hadley lunchtime academic help schedule, Academic Catch-Up is open every day of the week. Students come here after being referred by a teacher. A student is asked to attend if they have not completed a test or assignment. The Resource provides students with a quiet location to complete their work during the lunch hour, and is located in the Hadley remediation room. If a student fails to attend Academic Catch-Up when referred it will result in a lunch time detention to complete the assignment. Teacher referrals: when work is not completed Every day at lunch from 12:10 to 12:45 Students are not evaluated for Academic Catch-Up E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) Support [Hadley & Philemon] E.S.L. support is offered to students whose competency in the English language hinders their understanding across the other subject areas. These students are generally those living in non-english households. The classes will be conducted by an English teacher. Groups will be composed of both Hadley and Philemon students together. They will

be working through the Kick-Off in English and Connecting Through English textbooks, depending on their individual levels. New students coming from out-of-country Teacher referrals Students will go to E.S.L. during the class that falls in this period upon approval from that teacher. In some cases students will only be able to attend one of the two courses. The E.S.L. and Resource teachers will work together to allow students enrolled in both services the ability to work from the text/workbook during resource/credit recovery classes as well. English Teacher Hadley Resource Teacher Students will be not be evaluated for E.S.L. Students will be expected to catch up on work missed due to E.S.L. scheduling, as they will be evaluated as usual in their regular courses. Lunchtime Remediation [Hadley & Philemon] The Lunchtime Remediation Program, or Lunchtime Academic Help Program runs in both Hadley and Philemon. All students are welcome to attend and receive help on assignments, homework or prepare for tests. Any student may attend Teachers may ask students to attend particular lunchtime remediation sessions if required. Every day at lunch for different subject areas (refer to remediation schedules on classroom doors / Guidance office) Staff members are assigned remediation time and the schedule is provided to students and available on our website Students are not evaluated for lunchtime remediation Partnership with Learn Quebec website [Hadley & Philemon] Through the free online resource students can access course notes and materials, practice tests and quizzes, free online tutorials and online course offerings. Free tutoring is available in the following subjects: Math (all levels) English Language Arts (all levels) Français Langue Seconde (all levels) History and Citizenship & History 4o4 Science & Technology Chemistry Physics Students/parents may choose to log onto the site on their own Students may be given their login by a teacher/academic Advisor and encouraged to use online tutorials and material. elearn is accessible to all students who have access to a computer terminal with functioning internet connection both in school and at home Specific online tutorial schedules are released by Learn Quebec every 3 months, and are available for download on their website or through the Guidance office Academic Advisors and homeroom teachers are in possession of the students login codes and passwords Students are not evaluated through Learn Quebec

Peer Mentoring [Hadley & Philemon] The Peer Mentoring program partners Philemon students that are registered in the Leadership option course with a Hadley student, or mentee. Leadership students assist their mentees with work completion and organization. The goals of the program are to have the Hadley students connect with an older peer who can support them in the school and for the Mentor to gain a sense of responsibility and develop his/her leadership qualities. Students can be referred by a teacher, administrator or a member of the Student Services team Parents/guardians can make a request Philemon Wright: Students that choose Leadership & Peer Tutoring as an elective course must have a reference from an administrator or an advisor to enrol Philemon students may visit their mentees during Arts, Ethics, Phys. Ed. or Geography. Mentees are pulled out of class for their leadership time, unless other arrangements are made between the teachers/parents/student Services team members. Mentors may work in the Centre of Excellence, supporting the enclosed classrooms Mentors may enter the classroom with the Mentees with permission from the teacher, to assist the student and/or teacher. Grade 11 Leadership teacher/coordinator, Academic Advisor (PW), Guidance Counsellor (H) Students will not be evaluated. Students will be evaluated at the end of each term based on the QEP Guidelines for Leadership (characteristics such as punctuality, initiative, cooperation, etc.). Peer/Professional Tutoring Services [Hadley & Philemon] Students and/or parents who are seeking further academic support outside of school hours are able to acquire a peer or professional tutor. Our tutor list consists of retired teachers, substitute teachers, current Philemon and Hadley teachers, CEGEP/University students and current Philemon senior students. We also refer students to the online tutor service, The Tutor Link. Teachers, students and/or parents can request that a student receive the tutor list for private tutoring options Academic Advisors have the listings in the Guidance Office/website The student/parent contacts the tutor directly via phone/ contact They establish location (which can be in the cafeteria at Philemon/Hadley after school), time, frequency and rate. Students/parents can also contact tutor candidates through the Tutor Link Online service at Academic Advisors Students are not evaluated for tutoring services. Rosetta Stone Program [Hadley & Philemon] The Rosetta Stone Program is language-learning software that engages students in listening and speaking exercises at a computer terminal through voice recognition. There is also a workbook with examples and exercises in French, from which homework is assigned. Students work in combination with the software and the workbook to move through the modules and complete the program. The goal is to have students become functional in the three French competencies: reading, writing and listening/speaking, in order to be able to rejoin their classes at level.

New students coming from out-of-province Anglophone/E.S.L./Aboriginal students with little/no experience Students removed from Geography course (3 periods/cycle), but continue to attend their regular French classes Students are registered in but do not attend their assigned French course (6 periods/cycle) Instead, students attend Rosetta Stone until (A) they are able to complete the program, or (B) they return to their French class for exam preparation Some students who have already completed the Sec. V English Requirement are able to attend Rosetta Stone during their English periods, and still attend their assigned French course Students will be evaluated by their regular French teachers At the end of each term, students will receive a report as to their progress in the R.S. program While participating in R.S., students will receive an NE (not evaluated) in French on their report cards At the end of each term, students will receive a report as to their progress in the R.S. program Upon completion of the program/return to class, students will write the June exams in French and be marked accordingly Work Completion Days [Hadley & Philemon] In advance of or following an extended absence from school when a student has missed tests and assignments, we encourage the student to discuss with an Academic Advisor the possibility of having a work completion period or day as needed to catch up. **NOTE: It is a student s responsibility when absent to take the required measures in order to catch up on missed materials and evaluations. This service is not offered in all cases of absence from school, and certainly only when absences are justified** Prior to a period of absence or immediately upon returning students should contact their academic advisor and their teachers to inquire about missed work and then plan with the academic advisor when missed assignments and tests can be completed. Teachers may also identify students who may require work completion time Planning with the academic advisor, some assignments may be completed at home or while others at school including testing evaluations. Academic Advisors in coordination with students and teachers. Work completed is returned to the teachers who originally referred the students and will be evaluated accordingly. Free Study Blocks [Philemon] On occasion students have spaces in their schedules that need to be filled because they have already passed their required courses. In situations where these students do not need extra help in their other courses they are given a free study block. They report to the resource room and use their time to complete homework from their other classes or offer their services to the other students in the resource room as student tutors. In other situations, students are given free study blocks because they need to lighten their course load for a variety of personal or academic reasons. In

these cases, they are expected to bring work to class and have the opportunity to get help from the resource teacher if needed. Students with IEPs are not registered in study blocks (see resource below). Students with holes in their schedule Students who need a lightened course load for a variety of personal or academic reasons. Study blocks are incorporated in the student s schedule as a full time course. Study blocks are placed in the student s schedule one to six times per cycle depending on the student s need. When a student is placed in a study block, the guidance department decides if the student will receive credits for this course or not. Students in grade 10 and 11 will receive credits if they are in peril of not graduating due to a lack of credits or if an elective class in which they need credits has been replaced with a study block. (STY course codes will be given credits and RES course codes will not) Students enrolled in the STY courses will be given an overall mark based on their effort, preparedness, and general work ethic. General Resource [Philemon] Resource is offered to all students who have IEPs that stipulate the need for academic and/or organizational support. Depending on the student s needs and schedule they may receive resource one to six times per cycle. At times, students will be offered general resource if the subject specific resource schedules do not work with their schedule. Mrs. Giles is always available to assist students during their resource blocks. It is, however, possible that other support in the form of volunteers, student tutors and mentors will be available during this time as well. Students are encouraged to complete homework, prepare for tests and organize themselves during these blocks. Computers are available for students to use for their work or to log-in to ELearn for online support. Students with IEPs who require additional academic support Any student who is referred by a teacher and meets Resource criteria NOTE: Only students who make effective use of resource/study time and maintain a high Attitude to Study level in their subjects are considered. Resource periods are incorporated in the student s schedule as a full time course. Resource is placed in the student s schedule one to six times per cycle depending on the student s need. When a student is placed in a resource block, the guidance department decides if the student will receive credits for this course or not. Students in grade 10 and 11 will receive credits if they are in peril of not graduating due to a lack of credits or if an elective class in which they need credits has been replaced with a resource block. (STY course codes will be given credits and RES course codes will not) Students enrolled in the STY courses will be given an overall mark based on their effort, preparedness, and general work ethic. Math Resource [Philemon] Math resource is offered to students who are struggling with their math classes. Students who struggled in previous years are targeted right away in September and others are added to the list as the year progresses. Students are expected to bring math related homework, study prep, and questions to their resource period. As there is limited space in these groups, any student who is truant or does not use the period effectively will be removed and placed back into their original schedule.

Students who failed a math course last year Students who showed an interest in math resource last year Teacher referrals and Student requests Math resource blocks are incorporated in the student s schedule as a full time course twice per cycle In some cases students will receive math resource during one or two of their elective classes. They will be expected to catch-up on the work missed during this time. See for General Resource above Power Play Program [Philemon] This program is designed to assist students who are working hard but still having difficulty in a particular subject. This school year, we are offering the program for students who are dragging their level of French (meaning they are Grade 11 students who would be eligible to graduate, but are still in Grade 10 French). This after-school course provides them with small group support in order to achieve the highest level of competency they can. It is taught by a teacher in the school, is a minimal financial cost to the student/parent, and is focussed on the most difficult contentspecific areas in the given subject. Participation in the program is voluntary, and along with hard work and planning and organization, can help a student learn the most difficult concepts they need in a small class environment. Students fit the profile of being a graduating student who is dragging a core/graduation requirement subject Academic Advisor for senior students Students are given learning and evaluation situations throughout the course Students will participate in the Secondary V M.E.L.S. provincial French Examination, the result of which will appear on their final Philemon report Card, and the Ministry Statement of Marks *******
