ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING INTRODUCTION ENGINEERING YOUR FUTURE
Agenda What is Engineering? Different disciplines What is Electrical Engineering? Different Subdisciplines. Background and overview Main Electrical Engineering sub-disciplines / Examples Preparing for Your Career While You're Still in High School Top Reasons for Considering Electrical Engineering Steps to start Engineering your future
What is Engineering? Engineering is the discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or inventions Scientists discover the world that exist; engineers create the world that never was TheodoreVon Karman, Aerospace Engineer
Engineering & Architecture Radio, television, telephones, computers, airplanes, space vehicles, automobiles, refrigerators and heaters, office machinery and home appliances, life-saving medical equipment and Martian battles fought with joysticks represent a mere sampling of the now familiar facets of life made possible by engineers, technologists and technicians & YOU could be part of it. Architecture Engineering Disciplines Mechanical Electrical / Electronics Structural Civil Industrial Aerospace Chemical Etc.
What is Electrical Engineering? Electrical engineering is a profession that uses science, technology, and problem-solving skills to design, construct, and maintain products, services, and information systems. Electrical engineering is the historical name for what is now called electrical, electronics, and computer engineering.
Electrical / Electronics Engineering Background and Overview Generation, distribution and/or application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. Electrical engineering is considered the largest of all engineering disciplines. Electrical Engineers have a desire to understand how things work and to learn continuously throughout their careers. As an electrical engineer you could work in areas that are at the very forefront of technological innovation.
Job Titles / Opportunities for Electrical Engineers Design Engineer Project Engineer Engineering Specialist Chief Engineer Quality Control Engineer Software Engineer Development Network Engineer Engineer Reliability Engineer Research Engineer Systems Design Engineer Field Engineer Test Engineer Sales Engineer
Electrical Engineering The field now covers a range of sub-studies: High and low power generation & distribution Electronics Digital Systems Digital & wireless communications Control Systems & Automation Mechatronics Engineer Robotics Interior and exterior lighting design Computer power supply systems Emergency power systems (UPS) Construction & project management Life Safety Systems Site investigation, inspection and reports Energy management Alternative sources of power (solar, wind, etc.) Medical imaging
Electrical Engineering / Power Engineering Power engineering: dealing with the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity as well as the design of a range of related devices, such as transformers, electric generators, electric motors and power electronics.
A photovoltaic system is a system which uses solar cells to convert light into electricity. A photovoltaic system consists of multiple components, including cells, mechanical and electrical connections and mountings and means of regulating and/or modifying the electrical output. Due to the low voltage of an individual solar cell (typically ca. 0.5V), several cells are combined into photovoltaic modules, which are in turn connected together into an array. The electricity generated can be either stored, used directly or fed into a large electricity grid powered by central generation plants (grid-connected/gridtied plant) or combined with one or many domestic electricity generators to feed into a small grid (hybrid plant). HERCULES ENGINEERING SYSTEMS
What is a Fire Alarm? The main purpose of a fire alarm system is to protect life and property by giving early warning of a fire, so that the occupants can evacuate and/or the Fire Department can respond. A system must be able to detect the initiation of a fire condition, but also notify someone such as emergency personnel, the ocupants of the facility, or both. Complete Life Safety Systems Fire alarm and suppression system design Intrusion detection systems security Access control Sprinkler pre-action systems Communication and data systems Close circuit television (CCTV)
School Renovation Safety and Technology Upgrade for LAUSD / Example School Renovation Safety and Technology Upgrades School Renovation Safety and Technology Upgrades Complete survey of school systems conditions. Evaluation and recommendations to upgrade, replace, or retain the existing equipment and related elements. Power distribution system evaluation and upgrade Complete new systems for public address (Intercom/PA), cable television, security (intrusion alarm), addressable fire alarm, computer data network. Upgrade of the power distribution system to accommodate new load additions, and future school expansion. Compliance with local codes, regulations & LAUSD requirements
Transforming the world & the way we live The Past
Transforming the world & the way we live The Present
Transforming the world & the way we live The Future YOU Engineer your future, Make a difference, Have fun, Leave a legacy
Preparing for Your Career While You're Still in High School Mathematics, science, and English form an extremely important foundation for an engineering career Basic understanding of history, culture, and current events are necessary Learn, investigate how things work, talk to others about engineering ( Active participation on school programs, orientations, etc.
Top Reasons for Considering Electrical Engineering Job Satisfaction. You re never truly a success until you enjoy what you are doing Wide Choice of Career Opportunities Financial Security. Engineering graduates receive the highest starting salary of any discipline. Potential to Benefit Society As an engineer, you can choose to work on projects that benefit society & the environment Intellectual Development & Creative Thinking An engineering education will "exercise" your brain, developing your ability to think logically and to solve problems. Because we are in a time of rapid social and technological changes, the need for engineers to think creatively is greater now than ever before. Ideal profession to explore, invent, discover, and create Prestige & Professionalism Respected profession Be at the forefront of technological innovation
Depends on: How much money do electrical engineers make? 1. Engineering specialization 2. Industry 3. Other areas of specialization and degrees 4. Licenses & Certifications (PE-Professional Professional Engineer, PM- Project manager, etc) 5. Years in the industry / experience 6. Personality & Passion 7. Who you work for 8. YOU Executive Assistance Industrial Mechanical Aeronoutical JOB Administrative Assistance Retail Store Manager Administrative / Office Manager Project Manager / Construction Manager Biochemical Engineering Civil / Environmental Electrical/Electronics (Electrical, Software, Control Systems, etc.) Base Salary + Bonus Average $33,000 $42,000 $39,000 $72,000 $46,000 $69,000 $71,000 $73,000 $76,000 $80,000 $75,000 $95,000 or more
Basic Requirements to become an Electrical / Electronics Engineer Strong intuition about how things work Desire to learn and apply knowledge Enjoy technology Passion for creating / enhancing things, processes, etc. Strong belief that technology properly apply could benefit and enhance human life What you already have: Intelligence / Brain Opportunity Guidance & support
Select your goal - Engineering your future Unlock your personal potential Learn, investigate, ask, etc Commit yourself to your plan. Chart your course / Engineer your future (what?, where?, when? Expect problems. Don t t give up Stand firm on your commitment and beliefs. Be proud of yourself, and make others proud of you. Share your blessings with others. You re never truly a success until you enjoy what you are doing
