He has an extensive background in the field of criminal justice, having served in a law enforcement capacity at the municipal, county, and state level for nearly forty years. The last 15 years of his Law Enforcement career were spent as Director of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. He is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course, the Southwest School of Polygraph, and served over 35 years in the Army Reserve and National Guard programs. He has lectured abroad in both Albania and China on leadership and law enforcement topics and is currently the Director of the School of Criminal Justice at UCO.

2 Course Description: Catalog Description: Careers and technologies in criminal justice is designed to introduce students to the many career paths that exist in criminal justice and the common skill sets needed for communication, problem solving, and leadership abilities that are required by various agencies. Students will also explore the history of technologies used by CJ, as well as current and future trends. Prerequisites: English 1113 Objectives: Students will write a professional resume Students will be able to articulate entry level requirements for criminal justice positions they are seeking Students will be capable of scoring well on oral interviews Students will be familiar with current technologies used in the field of criminal Justice as well as future trends in technolog Transformational Learning Objectives: The careers and technology course most closely aligns with the discipline knowledge element of the Central six. The course is designed to expose students to careers and technology currently found in the field. Students will learn firsthand from those working in law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice and the courts the challenges being faced with in those disciplines, and the solutions being applied. Students will learn problem solving skills and apply critical and creative thinking to develop possible solutions to real world problems. Required texts: Careers in Criminal Justice and Related Fields: From Internship to Promotion. By J. Scott Harr and Karen M. Hess, Sixth Edition, ISBN # 13: Course Outline, Grading and Participation Requirements: Class Rules: Talking or otherwise disturbing the class during lectures will not be tolerated and may result in point deductions from your final point totals. You must leave all cell phones and like devices put away during class, not on your desk, and insure they are in the silent mode. Texting, and reading outside materials during class is not permitted and may result in a 5 point deduction from your final point totals per violation. Just don t do it!

3 Tentative Test Dates and Assignment Due Dates: There will be two examinations in the course, the Mid Term will be given on March 1, and will consist of a variety of question types including essay. Your will be responsible for all assigned materials and lectures up to the March 1. The final examination will be conducted on Tuesday, May 1st at 9:00 to 10:50 AM and will also consist of various question types including essay. The final will cover all materials from the midterm forward. Each test will be worth toward your final grade. To insure reading comprehension there will be a number of quizzes at various points during the semester. These quizzes will total toward your final grade. You will write an essay concerning your dream job with an attached cover letter and resume. The essay and accompanying documents will be a graded according to a rubric provided in the course materials folder and will account for a possible 75 points on your final grade. I will not accept late papers. Failure to turn in your essay with all attachments on time will result in a zero for the assignment. You will be required to make an oral presentation of your essay that will also be graded according to a rubric provided in the course material folder. You are expected to come to class prepared to discuss any and all reading assignments and contribute to the learning process. Class participation points will be given at the discretion of the instructor and will be based on attendance, participation in discussion, and completion of short writing assignments. The maximum class participation points for the course are 100. Failure to attend class will result in a loss of points. Makeup and Extra Credit Assignments: There will be no make ups or extra credit assignments.
