Spivey Office Phone: Office Location: Liberal Arts Building Office Hours: Wednesdays 6:00pm-7:15pm and by appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION Intro to Crime Mapping introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to students in the Criminal Justice program. The course provides instruction in the use of GIS for spatial analyses and mapping including methods of collecting, storing, assessing and manipulating spatiallybased information from the crime analysis perspective. Examples and projects will focus on spatial analysis for tactical, strategic and administrative crime mapping, and will culminate in a project that uses real-world crime data to analyze and/or solve a real world issue. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: Demonstrate a working proficiency in GIS View, edit and analyze crime data and related spatial data using GIS Create crime maps that portray findings and analyses performed with crime data and related spatial data using advanced geospatial techniques Properly structure spatial data for the most efficient and effective use of that data for crime analysis Apply analytic techniques to real world situations/dilemmas using spatially-enabled crime data Demonstrate a functional knowledge of the latest GIS technology and trends TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING OBJECTIVES The University of Central Oklahoma is a learning--centered organization committed to transformative education through the Central Six, which -include Discipline Knowledge; Leadership; Problem Solving (Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities); Service Learning and Civic Engagement; Global and Cultural Competencies; and Health and Wellness. This course addresses four of the university s transformative learning goals: Discipline Knowledge: Students will complete readings and assignments that teach them the fundamental skills needed to work effectively with GIS in their chosen discipline.

2 Leadership: Students will demonstrate leadership through public speaking/presentation opportunities, as well as directing other students in the collection of data needed for the semester project. Problem Solving: Students will required to evaluate a number of crime-related situations where the student must select the best data to perform the most efficient and effective analysis on the data to arrive at a sensible and sustainable finding/conclusion that could then be acted on to solve the problem at hand. This will require research into data availability, determination of which analyses can best produce results needed through critical thinking, and creativity as to how best accurately and completely represent the results through maps, charts, tables and writings. Service Learning and Civic Engagement: Students will be using real-world data and be presenting to representatives of local public safety organizations. REQUIRED TEXT There is no text required for the course. Relevant reading on the internet and via handouts will be assigned, however. Books may be placed On Reserve at the library at various times throughout the semester to further augment learning objectives with assigned readings, if needed. REQUIRED MATERIALS Because of the need to work with large amounts of data and the ability to collect that data and need to transfer/transport that data, the student is required to have a Flash Drive (16 GB or larger). COURSE REQUIREMENTS Students are responsible for the timely completion of all assignments and are expected to come to class prepared each week for class discussion and hands-on use of GIS software. Assignments: There will be 10 assignments during the semester. Each assignment will consist of written and GIS lab work. Prior experience with Windows is required. We will reserve approximately one hour each Wednesday for lab work. A schedule of when the computer room is available at other times during the week will be provided. Each lab is due the following week at the beginning of class (see Late Work Policy following the Course Outline). Quizzes and Class Participation: Students are required to read assigned material, participate in class activities and discussions. Project (for Graduate Students enrolled in CJ5910): Graduate students will have a graded project in which a firm grasp of GIS concepts and working with and analyzing GIS data will be demonstrated. The project will consist of an original dataset, an analysis of a spatial problem, a 10-page technical paper (not including references, August 19, 2015 Page 2

3 data, support material, but including 1 project definition map, at least 2 analysis maps, 1 conclusion map and any summary tables), and a poster presentation (not to exceed 36 x48 ) of the project summary and conclusions. The project topic will be presented to the class and must be approved by the instructor. Detailed instructions, requirements and schedule will be provided as the semester progresses. You will submit your write-up to the D2L Dropbox for grading and will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin. Datasets and map documents will be submitted in a folder called Project and must be fully functional when graded by the instructor. Project Support and Peer Review (for Undergraduate Students enrolled in CJ4910): Undergraduate students will be assigned a number of tasks to support one or more of the graduate students projects. Undergraduate students will also be required to ask a defined number of intelligent questions during the final graduate project poster presentations and provide a three-page peer review write-up of the final presentations that they did not support throughout the semester. Midterm/Final Exams: Students will take a midterm exam to gauge their GIS data and analysis skills. It can include multiple choice, matching, short answer and lab-type GIS analyses to demonstrate basic GIS skills learned to date. The final exam will be similar and cover spatial analysis topics and techniques learned during the 2 nd half of the semester. Any student who misses more than three (3) of legal class periods is subject to the grade of F regardless of assignment and test scores. Two tardies (arriving in class after 7:40pm) will count as one unexcused absence assignments can still be handed in, but 10% of the assignment points will be deducted from the assignment total points. Quizzes given at the beginning of class will not be counted on the day of tardiness (points for that quiz will be counted as zero (0)). Classroom Etiquette: Please respect the learning environment of students and the instructor. Do not sleep or do homework in class except during time set aside for lab time. Recording lectures is prohibited. Do not use Facebook or any other social networking during class. Do not surf the web unless asked to by instructor. Keep texting to a minimum (only if necessary). Silence your phone during class. If you must make a call or take a call, please step outside the classroom (or during breaks). During exams or quizzes, phones must be turned off or silenced and put away. If caught using any electronic device during an exam, you will receive no points for that exam and disciplinary action will be considered as outlined in the Code of Student Contact. Lively discussions during class are encouraged, but derogatory comments, negativity, or poor attitudes will not be tolerated and considered disruptive behavior for which you will be asked to leave the class. If more than one of these actions occur, disciplinary action will be taken as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct. Make-Ups: Exams will be taken at scheduled times unless arrangements are made with the professor prior to the exam time. Students who miss exams due to excused absence (e.g. death in the family or documented illness) will be allowed to take a make-up exam. The professor reserves the right to make all make-up exams in any format they deem appropriate (more lab, less lab, more/all essay). The professor also reserves the right to issue a zero (0 points) to any August 19, 2015 Page 6

7 student not adhering to this policy. Assignments and/or quizzes can only be made up if the absence is excused. Late Assignments: Late assignments are accepted with penalties and only until one week after the original due date. Each day the assignment is late is worth a letter grade. For example, if the assignment is due at 1pm on November 4 th, it is late at 1:01pm on 11/4 and the highest grade you could receive would be a B. If you turned in the assignment on 11/6, the highest grade you would receive would be a D. Assignments will not be accepted one week (7 days) after the original due date. Academic Integrity: Each student is expected to engage in all academic pursuits in a manner that is above reproach. Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in the academic experiences both in and out of the classroom. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not confined to: plagiarizing; cheating on tests or examinations; turning in counterfeit reports, tests, and papers; stealing tests or other academic material; knowingly falsifying academic records or documents of the institution; accessing a student's confidential academic records without authorization; disclosing confidential academic information without authorization; and, turning in the same work to more than one class without informing the instructors involved. Any student found responsible of academic dishonesty will be subject to disciplinary action. Violation of these expectations, as specified above and in sections III, IV, and V of the Student Handbook, may result in penalties up to and / or including expulsion from the University. UCO subscribes to the Turnitin.com plagiarism prevention service. Students agree that by taking this course, all required assignments may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com restricted access reference database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such assignments. Use of the Turnitin.com service is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the Turnitin.com website. Turnitin.com is just one of various plagiarism prevention tools and methods which may be utilized by your faculty instructor during the terms of the semesters. In the UCO Student Handbook, there is a process for contesting any plagiarism allegations against you. Plagiarism: All writing assignments that you submit for this course must either be entirely your own, or properly referenced/cited. Violations constitute plagiarism. A case involving plagiarism is usually referred to the Discipline Committee, which can recommend in extreme cases dismissal from the University. There are two major types of plagiarism: 1. Word-for-word copying, without acknowledgement, of another writer. Having another person write or dictate all or part of one s composition is plagiarism. In addition, you should not copy a printed passage, no matter how brief, without acknowledging its source. 2. The unacknowledged paraphrasing of an author s ideas. You should not take credit for another person s thoughts. Any distinctive, original idea taken from another writer should August 19, 2015 Page 7

8 be credited to its author. If you are uncertain about the distinctiveness of an author s idea, it is best to acknowledge the author. Students with Disabilities: The University of Central Oklahoma complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of Students with disabilities who need special accommodations must make their requests by contacting Disability Support Services at (405) The DSS Office is located in the Nigh University Center, Room 309. Students should also notify the instructor of special accommodation needs by the end of the first week of class. Expectations: Students are expected to come to class prepared. Students should have read the assigned chapter/material prior to that day s class and be ready to discuss the material. If there was something unclear from the reading/material, students should come to class with questions to ask the instructor. Final Exam, Emergency & No-Show: If a university emergency occurs that prevents the administration of the final exam, the student s final course grade will be calculated based on the work in the course completed to that point. Final exams will not be rescheduled, and a grade of incomplete (I) will not be given as a result of the missed exam. If a student does not show up and take the final exam during the scheduled exam time, he/she will receive a zero for the exam unless the student contacts the professor within 24 hours of the scheduled exam and provides documents detailing why the student had a legitimate, excusable reason for not taking the exam as scheduled.
