1 CURRICULUM FOR THE MASTER PROGRAM IN BUSINESS LAW AT WU VIENNA UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS (as amended by the resolutions of the Committee f Academic Programs dated May 14, 2009, June 24, 2010, November 19, 2013, and January 14, 2014, approved by the Senate of WU Vienna University of Economics and Business on May 27, 2009, June 30, 2010, December 4, 2013, and January 29, 2014) On May 27, 2009, the Senate of WU Vienna University of Economics and Business approved the following resolution by the Committee f Academic Programs of May 14, 2009 on the curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law, in accdance with the Federal Act on the Organization of Universities and their Studies (Universitätsgesetz, Universities Act 2002), Federal Law Gazette BGBl.I No. 120/2002 as amended. 1 Objectives The Master Program in Business Law is a graduate degree program intended as a continuation of the Bachel Program in Business Law, and also of the bachel and firstdegree programs of law completed at other universities. It provides participating students with a comprehensive legal education in a wide range of subjects and with great methodical depth. This program also offers an academically based, professionallyiented education in Austrian, European and international business law. Apart from gaining business law skills, students also gain skills in economics and business administration, in accdance with the high standards set by the bachel program at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business. Accdingly, the Master Program in Business Law provides an education and/ preparaty training f graduates of the bachel program who wish to obtain not only immediate practical qualifications but also theetical and academic skills, qualifying them f leading management positions, specific legal professions, namely f employees at law firms, notary public offices, and courts, (future) research and teaching staff at universities who wish to obtain the necessary prerequisites f higher scientific qualifications (particularly PhD candidates). 2 In pursuit of these objectives, the goal is, in particular, to impart the following additional skills: the ability to independently assess and determine complex matters on the basis of the acquired legal and economic skills and the social and personal skills previously acquired in the course of the bachel program, independent mastery of the academic methods and techniques required f that purpose, the ability to independently produce papers that meet academic requirements in terms of content, fm and rational argumentation skills, the effective al and written communication of problems and their solutions and the ability to communicate outside the fields of law, business and economics, the related ability to apply the acquired skills in practice, and to lay the foundations f the required qualifications f a continued academic career, the ability to continue to independently develop skills on the basis of the acquired knowledge of essential systemic interrelations and to effectively keep pace with new legal and economic developments on a national, supranational and international level, the general ability to define and implement projects in a specific field, to independently develop scientifically founded initiatives and to become prepared to assume a leading position in the relevant field, based on the skills acquired. 2 Admission Requirements The prerequisite f admission to the Master Program in Business Law is the successful completion of a bachel degree program a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) bachel program an equivalent first-degree program in a relevant discipline at a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Austria abroad. Bachel programs, university of applied sciences bachel programs, equivalent first-degree programs in a relevant discipline are degree programs from a university a university of applied sciences to which the following apply: a) The program consists of a minimum of 180 ECTS credits b) Graduates are granted an academic degree in law c) Graduates have completed examinations in legal subjects wth at least 95 ECTS credits, including at least 40 credits in the field of Austrian law. Time spent on a bachel thesis in law is to be credited to the number of credits. 3 Classification, Structure, Total Credit Hours and ECTS (1) The Master Program constitutes an academic degree program in legal sciences pursuant to 54 (1) of the Universities Act (2) The 4-semester Master Degree Program in Business Law is made up of 120 ECTS credits and a maximum of 43 credit hours. The master thesis is wth 20 ECTS credits, and the subjects of the Master Degree Program in Business Law account f the remaining 100 ECTS credits. Curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law 2

3 4 Types of Examinations The examination types indicated in this curriculum are defined in the examination regulations of Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. All required complementary in-depth elective ECTS credits and credit hours must be selected from the same field: 1. 5 Cpate Finance and Industrial Economics 4 2 PI Public Sect Economics 4 2 PI * PI = prüfungsimmanent, class with continuous assessment of student perfmance b) From another economic subject (type of examination: PI LVP): The Vice- Rect f Academic Programs and Student Affairs may, in consultation with the Academic Direct responsible f the program in question, determine one me such course programs wth 15 ECTS credits and submit them to the Committee f Academic Programs. The Committee f Academic Programs is entitled to revoke the Vice-Rect s decision in its subsequent meeting with regard to curricular matters and determine a course program itself. The finalized examination modes are to be published in the bulletin of WU Vienna University of Economics and Business (Mitteilungsblatt) in a timely manner. In the event of changes, to protect the interests of those students who had justifiably relied on being able to complete their examinations accding to the previously valid regulations, the Vice-Rect f Academic Programs and Student Affairs shall provide f adequate transitional measures and submit these to the Committee f Academic Programs. The Committee f Academic Programs is entitled to revoke the Vice-Rect s decision in its subsequent meeting and may instead determine transitional provisions itself. 3. Business Administration: As an alternative, students may choose to complete all of the following courses in the complementary field of Business Administration: a) In Management: Course title ECTS Credit hours Type of examination Organizational Behavi (Business Law) PI Strategic Management (Business Law) PI b) From another business administration subject (type of examination: PI LVP): The Vice-Rect f Academic Programs and Student Affairs may, in consultation with the Academic Direct responsible f the program in question, determine one me such course programs wth 15 ECTS credits and submit them to the Committee f Academic Programs. The Committee f Academic Programs is entitled to revoke the Vice-Rect s decision in its subsequent meeting with regard to curricular matters and determine a course program itself. Legal sciences: At least two seminars pursuant to (2) must be completed as part of the in-depth elective in the legal sciences. In addition, students can choose to either complete two further seminars pursuant to (2) two courses of the courses under (1) lines 1 and 2 that they have not yet taken. A maximum of two seminars in the same subject may be selected f the in-depth elective requirement. (4) Students are also required to bring proof of the successful completion of free electives wth 2 ECTS credits. Any course subject to an examination offered at a recognized university in Austria abroad may be selected as a free elective. Curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law 5

6 6 Prerequisites f admission to specific courses and examinations The successful completion of the course Organizational Behavi (Business Law) from the complementary field of Business Administration in the subject Management is the prerequisite f admission to the course Strategic Management (Business Law) from the complementary field of Business Administration in the subject Management. 7 Studies Abroad In the course of the preliminary decision procedure, when reviewing a student s study program f his/her planned studies abroad, it should be ensured that the courses to be attended at the university abroad are relevant in the overall context of the Master Program in Business Law. 8 Master Thesis (1) Each student is obliged to submit a master thesis wth 20 ECTS credits. (2) In their master theses, the students have to demonstrate their ability to independently handle a topic with the help of academic research methods. (3) The topic of the master thesis is to be chosen from one of the subjects listed in 5 (1). The students are entitled to propose a topic themselves to select one from a number of suggestions made by the available superviss. Apart from that, 33 of the Bylaws of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration applies. 9 Completion of the Master Program After a student has successfully completed all required examinations and the master thesis, a certificate will be issued evidencing the successful completion of the Master Program in Business Law. 10 Academic Degree Students who have completed the Master Program in Business Law are awarded the academic degree of "Master of Laws (WU)", abbreviated "LL.M. (WU)" 11 Effective Date (1) This Curriculum shall enter into fce on October 1, (2) This Curriculum shall replace the curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law pursuant to the resolutions of the Committee f Academic Programs dated November 9, 2006, May 24, 2007, and July 10, 2008, approved by the Senate on November 15, 2006, May 30, 2007, and July 11, (3) The amendments of this Curriculum pursuant to the resolution of the Committee f Academic Programs dated June 24, 2010 and approved by the Senate of the Vienna University of Economics and Business on June 30, 2010, shall take effect on October 1, Curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law 6

7 (4) The amendments of this Curriculum pursuant to the resolution of the Committee f Academic Programs dated November 19, 2013 and approved by the Senate of the Vienna University of Economics and Business on December 4, 2013, shall take effect on October 1, (5) The amendments of this Curriculum pursuant to the resolution of the Committee f Academic Programs dated January 14, 2014 and approved by the Senate of the Vienna University of Economics and Business on January 29, 2014, shall take effect on October 1, Transitional provisions (1) Degree students who, at the time of entry into fce of this Curriculum, have already begun the Master Program in Business Law at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business pursuant to the resolutions of the Committee f Academic Programs dated November 11, 2006, May 24, 2007 and July 10, 2008, approved by the Senate on November 15, 2006, May 30, 2007 and July 11, 2008, shall be entitled to complete their studies by the end of the 2011/12 winter semester accding to the curriculum applicable on September 30, If a student fails to complete his/her studies within that period, the student will be subject to the new curriculum f the remainder of his/her studies. In addition, the students are entitled to voluntarily transfer to the new curriculum at any time. (2) Students who have already begun taking courses in the subject General Management befe October 1, 2010, are entitled to complete the degree program under the version of the curriculum valid until September 30, In addition, students are entitled to change over to the currently valid curriculum at any time they choose. (3) Degree students who have already begun taking courses in Business Czech f the complementary field Feign Language Business Communication befe September 30, 2014, are entitled to complete the degree program under the version of the curriculum valid until September 30, In addition, students are entitled to change over to the currently valid curriculum during any enrollment period. (4) Degree students who have already completed at least one of the courses Introduction to the Master Program in Business Law, Financial and Management Accounting, Strategic Management befe September 30, 2014, are entitled to complete the degree program under the version of the curriculum valid until September 30, Curriculum f the Master Program in Business Law 7
